It's more or less that time of the year again where you pick out one game (or two, or three) from a relatively dismal harvest of games this year stretching back to January of the year to be your GOTY contender. And I'm expecting a bunch of Borderlands 2s to show up, because I am great and I can predict answers before they are even given out.

Ordinarily, I would suggest mine, but I've not been playing much this year. Never mind university, but I'm tight with money and I prefer tackling my backlog first. I would like to get Dishonoured and XCOM: Enemy Unknown however. Both have equally good chances of getting my praise. And getting my praise is difficult, but worth it, because my evaluations are worth a hundred times more than four rubbish "reviewers" of a worthless advertisement rag like Famitsu magazine. :jtc:

The only 2012 games I have played this year not counting demos are Torchlight 2 (which is...average and what you expect from a Diablo-inspired indie hack-and-slash dungeon-crawler RPG) and Sleeping Dogs. The latter does nothing really original and the story is predictably not great by any means, but I do love the Hong Kong setting. It feels fantastically fresh compared to the countless times that the USA has been used for sandbox game settings. And it doesn't have the relative soullessness of say, Just Cause 2.

So, shoot. Which one is it for you this year?

i'm gonna do this in 2 sections, my GOTY of games that came out this year and GOTY from the games I played this year

GOTY from the games of 2012 goes to Journey, the game has a amazing soundtrack, it looks beautiful on the hd tv, and the gameplay while being simple it works really, the simple online feature makes the game pretty dam fun as well, you could be walking along then suddenly somebody appears and you can errr.... dance with them

GOTY from the games I played this year goes to tales of vesperia, this game was just beautiful, the story was amazing, the soundtrack is just top level and the characters are just soooo amazing, you will always have a place in my gaming characters top list rita, second goes to Persona 3 and Pokemon Black 2 gets thrid

Borderlands 2 is definitely my game of the year. It was amazing in pretty much every way. It lasted me a good few months of playing. The humour is so good, the characters are amazing. Handsome Jack is one of the funniest and best bad guys ever.

I'd also vote Tekken Tag Tournament 2...purely because it's awesome :griin:

Borderlands 2 was a good game, it dragged on towards the end and most of the end quests just become tedious which I felt ruined the overall experience. For me it goes to Far Cry 3, its massive, open, beautiful and I can slightly relate to that of the main character. That and it has one of the best villains in video games in my opinion :)

out of the games I play..

Borderlands 2 was one of the few games I did enjoy that came out this year, The story was way better from the first one, the DLC's are very good (granted I still hate dlc... but we wont go there...) overall the game is very well worked through and thought out.

I think most award shows though will be giving game of the year to Blops 2... just a feeling I have...

Xcom hands down. I put so much time into that game and loved every second of it. Mass effect 3 was out this year wasnt it? Despite all the shite talk abotu the ending it was still a brilliant game but Xcom definitely wins for me. Other mentions would include borderlands 2 and tekken tag 2.

I'm gonna go with the game that, I knew would be my GOTY all along...

WWE 13

Holy apple sauce! this is easily the best wrestling game ever released (even better than No Mercy!). It has so much customization, so many new things to do, the biggest roster in franchise history, it's gonna take me weeks to finally do an actual match, because I'll be messing with all the customizable stuff.

To top it off there's the Attitude Era mode which will let me play through my childhood, which is very cool. The DLC is also fantastic this year. You get old favorites like Gangrel, Too Cool & Goldust

and current favorites like Tensai, AJ Lee, and Ryback!

The in game roster is amazing also. You have the guys who are mainstays like Triple H, Edge, Kane, Undertaker and pretty much EVERYBODY inbetween.

After this year is up and the next game comes out, this one will still be popular due to the Attitude Era roster.

.... So there.

I'd have to give it to Borderlands 2 as well. The game is a very nice improvement over the original. I honestly didn't expect myself to really enjoy it that much considering I didn't like the original much. There is just so much to do in that game that it adds so much replay value to it. Not to mention the multiplayer part of it. My two honorable mentions goes out to Tales of Graces f and Persona 4 Arena however.

My GOTY is also Borduhlands 2 :inlove:

The storyline and characters were a lot more personal and involving this time around...and the final boss was a lot better :lew: The DLC keeps the side quests interesting with new scenery and characters, and the raid bosses give you something to do when your level is capped out and you are bored (when they aren't glitched and time locked :wacky:) The characters all have their own personalities and the characters from the first game even came back as fun npc's. I'm STILL playing this game, have been since release and I'm still not bored of it.

mass effect 3 was out this year, wasn't it? it's a clear winner for me, the perfect way to finish off a brilliant trilogy. i despise the fans who pissed and moaned about the ending to the extent that they forced ea to do a new one.

i haven't played borderlands 2, which seems a popular choice. i loved the first one, thought it was absolutely fantastic. i might get around to the new one eventually but from what i saw of my flatmate playing it, it doesn't look like i'll enjoy it as much as i did the first one.

Did Deus Ex: HR come out last year? I am not sure, either way I only played it last year so it counts. It's really very excellent, and a game I can't recommend highly enough. Borderlands 2 also gets a mention as my favourite multiplayer game of the year

Dishonored, because I got it for Christmas and have played it through twice now, with a third playthrough started, and I'm still not bored of it. That in itself is an achievement, because after I play a game once I don't usually touch it again for at least six months. The freedom to play however I want is much appreciated, the city of Dunwall is the most fantastically designed world I've explored that hasn't been in a JRPG - the only comparison I can think of is Rapture which, whilst atmospheric and grimy, lacked the misery and decay of Dunwall - and it's just so much FUN. I rarely get to enjoy myself without any reservations or criticism. The only criticism I have of Dishonored is that it's too short, and it only has three endings...technically two. But I can live with this. We need more games like this one out on the market.

Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland gets a mention for improving on Totori in every way possible, in having a unique world-building mechanic that was infinitely more satisfying than Totori's in-game adventure trophy hunt, in getting rid of the strenuous and painful requirements for fifty million endings - much as I loved Rorona and Totori, manipulating EVERYTHING for endings was a horrific exercise in time management - and for being something completely new whilst at the same time being delightfully familiar. I wish there was a fourth Arland game coming, because I will NEVER get tired of this cast. Following these characters through about fifteen in-game years of history has made me become extremely attached to them, and I'm genuinely sad to see it end...but this was definitely a high note. If the Plus versions of this and Totori are ever localized, I'm getting them. One of the more enjoyable JRPGs I've played in a while.

The only games I played and were released last year:

I am alive (PSN title)
Deus Ex
Max Paine 3

I have to say I am alive is my GOTY. Its post apocalyptic and pure survival and a dash of Uncharted. I loved it.
If it was a complete game on disc it would have been much much better I reckon.
For a PSN title its really imo a gem.

I didnt buy a lot of games I said I would buy. Im not interested I guess.
The games I really want are months or maybe years away... -__-

Gonna buy Bioshock Infinite though!

There wasn't a lot of competition in 2012, IMHO. A lot of the releases we saw were entirely forgettable (the fact that I couldn't name but a few games that released in 2012 proves it).

However, on the downloadable game front, the clear winner is Journey. It was unique, the graphics were excellent, the music and sound effects even moreso, and the silent storyline was actually quite moving.

On the 'normal' game front, I think I'll give my award to Mass Effect 3. It wasn't perfect, but in addition to being a great game of its own right, ME3 had the added pressure of tying up loose ends from two previous titles and drawing them all to one big close. Overall I thought the integration of player choice was excellent, and the original ending wasn't so bad as all that (it did benefit from the expansion, though--Bioware didn't really change the ending for their fans, they just explained it further, which I liked). Graphics were easily the best in the series, and the sound design was top notch. I especially liked the soundtrack. All in all it was a great experience.

i'm still saying journey for my top game, but 2nd places now goes to tales of graces f

once again it has shown how awesome the tales series is, a great story, good characters, a great soundtrack and my god, 40 hours and i'm still not finished, not had a game take this long in quite a while :)

For me it goes to Far Cry 3, its massive, open, beautiful and I can slightly relate to that of the main character. That and it has one of the best villains in video games in my opinion :)

Nice to see a mention of Far Cry 3. :) Looking back on it, besides White Knight Chronicles 2, Mass Effect 2 (which I completed), ME3, and Deus Ex, I didn't really play as much in 2012. The only game I played that came out last year was Far Cry 3 (and ME3, but only clocked in a few hours so far), which I got for Christmas. Still currently playing it and definitely plan on finishing it sometime next month. Here's to hoping. It's a pretty sick game, a lot of the stuff the villains say or do...well, they're all pretty gruesome. But I love the gameplay, even if it's FPS, which I'm generally not a huge fan of. This is one of those rare exceptions. The environment and the situation the character was put in will definitely pull you in right from the beginning. Highly recommend it.

To me there is only one game I'd put up as worthy of game of the year of the ones I played. And that is Telltales "The Walking Dead". Very intense game with great characters and writing. I've not played too much from this year, but here is what I did play but don't consider game of the year material for different reasons.

Mass Effect 3
Far Cry 3
Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
Lollipop Chainsaw
Soul Calibur V
Final Fantasy XIII-2 (American and EU versions released in 2012)
Tales of Graces F (this one would probably be my personal pick for most enjoyable game, but it had to much flaws to be GOTY)
Fuel Overdose
