Marbles, Pokemon Cards, Knuckle Heads, etc.

Everyone's been to a school where fads like those have become really popular. So what kind of fads went on at your school and did you get into them?

For me we had Pokemon Cards, it got so out of control with kids ripping eachother off "Here, I'll trade you my 5 caterpies for your shiny Raichu"etc that the teachers banned it from school :wacky:
I got right into the pokemon cards but i was one of the kids that would get ripped off :sad3:

We also did marbles, but they didn't last long.

Then these things called Konkers or....conkers or something, balls on a string were you have to knock them into eachother and smash the other persons up. They were considered dangerous though and were banned as well haha

I am sure there were more but I can't think of any others for now.

Now you

Ah Pokemon cards, I remember those days. Pokemon was the main fad then. Back then, a lot of people used to do a lot of trading there, mainly during class. I even remember someone starting a fight over some Pokemon cards. 8( Needless to say, they got banned at my school too :wacky:

Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic the Gathering was also a pretty big fad back then but more mild compared to Pokemon. Though I will admit I actually started the Gameboy fad where we just played nothing either Tetris or Pokemon during our lunch break. I was such a geek :sad3:

Oh yes I remember marbles.

I remember I found a nice looking one on the ground once in the playground and I made a kid cry because he said it was his and I didn't believe him thinking he was lying, trying to get me to give it to him. >.<

My dad took me to school the next day and made me give it to him. :sad3: It was so pretty.

But anyway, I remember the Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards as well. My brother was so into them. >.< I think I got into the Pokemon cards at one stage as well. My brother nearly had them all bar one, which neither of us had to complete at least one collection.

Oh and TAZO's!!! I had so many tazo's! They were my favourite!!!! I had a proper little Tazo holder and everything!

These fads only carried on during my primary school years. I don't think I ever remember anything like this in highschool. :hmmm:

Pokemon Cards :yay:

I loved those things so fucking much, it's embarrassing. I had so many, I wonder where they all went now. :lew:

I was never really into anything else though. Yugioh just never did it for me the same way, and the other fads at my school were often illegal. :lew:

Uhhhhh like everone else i remember pokemon cards aswell. It was funny as i had pokemon cards but had never even seen an episode of pokemon before.
The biggest fad i remember from when i was a kid was yoyo's. EVERYONE had them. I remember i mustve had at least 4 in total. You had to have one that could so a spinner :wacky: I had a green and a red...thunder yoyo or soemthing liek that a proyo and there was another one which i just cant remember. They were so popular at the time. Thinking about it now kinda makes me wish still had one.
POGS were another really popular one from when i was younger. Eveyone had pogs.
There were definitely more, its just hard to think of what they were :hmmm:

Pokemon cards was the main one. Everyone seemed to collect them. People would play matches during break and lunch. I didn't play very many games with them, but I just used to collect the cards. My collection was never very impressive (I always lacked Charizard and all of the uber-cool ones). Like in pretty much every school, Pokemon cards eventually became banned. My school went a step further and threatened that any Pokemon cards confiscated would end up in the shredder.

Another popular card game (only for a brief moment, though) was Magic: The Gathering. I think I ended up with more Magic cards than I did Pokemon... I liked the Magic cards a lot more... However I never ever played a match of cards with anyone. I was very upset when I lost my Bull Hippo card at school. I showed it to people, and it was in my coat pocket and someone must have stolen it... Probably one of my friends. The card wasn't even a powerful one, but it was my favourite card because it had a giant-ass hippo roaring mightily on it. Losing that card killed the fad for me, and I never went to school with my cards again. I never managed to find another copy of that card... If I saw it today on eBay I'd probably get it just to put my mind at rest. :argor: I did collect a few decks after that, but it was only private from then on. There wasn't anybody to play with after that.

We did also (at different times) have smaller fads like yoyos and Pogs, but Pogs was overtaken quickly by Boneheads. I ended up with quite a lot of Boneheads and I liked them quite a lot... So much that I didn't play many Bonehead games as I didn't want to lose any of the ones that I had collected. Me being naive with people, I lost a few of my favourites to friends (or people who I'd considered friends) who stole them but I was too polite to kick their ass to get them back. But Boneheads did become a major fad at school.

Warhammer also seemed as if it was attempting to develop into a fad at school, but it never got beyond a discussion of Warhammer. Nobody brought their figures into school (rightly so). I bought a little orc from someone for 50p and then that was pretty much as far as that fad went. I painted a few and then realised that it was going to take 50+ hours and £50 of preparation just to get enough figures ready to play a single game... Then I also realised that there wouldn't actually be many people for me to play the game with.

Pokemon cards was a craze at my school too. :) People traded them, ripped one another off and stole them from one another and, yes, they were eventually banned from my school too. Chris and I ended up getting back into these last year actually. The new ones are awesome! :O There are some gorgeous designs of Suicune, Magenium, Umbreon, Scizor etc. :) Thankfully it only lasted a couple of months. They're £3.50 for 10 now! Oh, and the Black and White ones are meh.

Conkers and yo-yos were also popular. We had a conker tree at school, I think, and I had one in my front garden (which the next door neighbours pulled down last week :() so people made their own. Everyone became very competitive with yo-yos and conkers...The boys used to insist that they were MUCH better than the girls.

I remember the times of Pokemon cards. It was real popular at my Elementary school(grades 1-6 for you foreign people :wacky:). I wasn't into it all that much myself because I really didn't get the whole game of pokemon because it was just too damn confusing for my smallish brain to comprehend. I was more of a marble guy myself, but that was until the school banned Marbles because it was considered toys. :hmph: not like I cared much, but meh.

Towards the end of my Elementary years, I started getting into Yugioh cards, and that was when I developed an inner-nerd. I was constantly dueling others at lunch time, and during class when work was completed. By middle school(grades 7-8), I was pretty good at yugioh and actually considered going "pro". But then that stupid Magic: The Gathering came along and well let's say that plan went out of fashion.

Still to this day, I play yugioh, but only as a fun hobby when I want some fun. I still watch the actual show, so that keeps the interest of Yugioh cards still alive. I play it with my friends.

Another fad that went on during Elementary was Yo-Yo's. I've wanted one of those shiny ones, but I wasn't made of money back then(nor am I now), so I couldn't get them. That made me very sad. :sad3:

Like everyone else, Pokémon cards were one of the school crazes, and to this day, probably the second biggest craze there was when I was in primary school. Unfortunately, I never got into Pokémon at all let alone the card game because I was part of the Digimon camp. I know at least one member of staff did join in with a deck of her own during lunch breaks, but she was the only anomaly. Every other member of staff was absolutely sick to death of this craze which led to physical attacks and abusive words thrown across the playground whenever anyone was accused of cheating or dodgy trading. Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic never took off in my primary school, which was just as well as I never got into the Yu-Gi-Oh card game until my first year of high school.

Marbles - boy, that was worse. That was a bigger craze than Pokémon and it gave the staff their biggest headache. The craze was ended when the headmaster announced that marbles were to be banned. Why? Well, it provoked a lot more fights than Pokémon cards, and the large marbles were seen as dangerous especially after one was allegedly thrown at someone. A lesser craze I've seen were these weird plastic things you can get out of collectible packs, and uhh, oh - Beyblade spinning top things.

A couple things I was into for "fads"

Pokemon Cards- like everyone else here, It got so out of control that they banned them in my school, people ripping each other off, cards going "missing", Kids were skipping class to play it..yeah my school was bad...

Yo-yo- How many tricks can you do with the yo-yo? Man those were fun... got those banned to for being to violent with them... :hmmm:

Pog's- Really? No one named Pog's? I don't even remember the rules to this game. I remember making a stack and hitting your big Pog on it, and all the ones you knocked down you got to keep... :hmmm:

there was one thing that a heap of folk did at my primary school but it sounds so ridiculous i dunno if it can be called a fad. they called it a 99er basically what they did was took a rubber (eraser) and rubbed their arm with it til they broke the skin then they ended up with huge scabs. needless to say i was too sensible to do something stupid like that :hmph:

i remember pokemon cards no one ever seemed to actually play the game. they just swapped cards :lew: pogs, yoyos. i remember you got pogs in bags of crisps and one time i was at my grandmas she gave me a bag of crisps and there were what seemed (at the time) like millions of pogs in this one bag. in reality i got about 4 or 5. i was so chuffed :lew:. i remember collecting conkers but we never really played at school maybe once or twice. according to my mum the trick was to pickle the conkers in vinegar which toughened them up. they fuckin stank tho :hmph: on a sidenote i remember the time kelly was getting ready to eat a conker :lew:

yoyos well everyone had one. i could never do any of the tricks. im pretty shit at things like...everything :sad3:

later on in primary school we used to build cars out of kinex then we'd smash them into each other until they broke and the one that didnt break or broke the least was the winner. i used to love that :gasp: the one thing i was quite good at too :sad3:

thats about it :hmmm:

The fads I remember were the Pokemon cards, they never caught on massively though, the yo-yos and the crazy-colored rubber armbands.

Oh and bad mexican soap operas XD

the original tradeable thing was football stickers. me and my mates used to collect them every year, and we'd always bring our swaps to school and go through them every few days to see who had new ones. we also collected wrestling stickers one year, but they weren't as good :hmmm:

tamagotchis, yo-yo's - i actualy got pretty good with it lol, got it confiscated afew times. er, dolly beads, but pretty much just for flicking at people. soon banned.

cant think of anything else

oh yeah, these small hard plastic dummy things... ive no idea how they came about but eeeeveryone had them... even me.... hahah i think ive still got one somewhere, i remember having it stuck to my house keys for ages and id imagine that big bundle of keytrings is still about

oh keyrings. lots and lots of keyrings, that was an annoying one. i had this massive mound of them and they weighed me right down

them rubber band things for your wrists, some of us had them going right up our arms....

edit* Oh! Pogs and taazos hahaha no i KNOW Ive still got a folder of tazos knocking about somewhere...

do kids collect conkers anymore, or has that died out with the intropduction of video gaming and kids not playing out. used to love it when it was conker season, come september we were all getting twitchy, read to jhit the trees when they were ready

@Jim i saved that conversation ,it was just too funny :lew:

them rubber band things for your wrists, some of us had them going right up our arms....
was that those snap band things that you'd slap around your wrist to put them on? my sister had loads of those and we just hit each other with them. :lew:

tazo's were fantastic. i remember you used to get star wars ones free in packets of doritos. i think one of my friends had the complete set of star wars ones. :hmmm: i was always more interested in the loony tunes ones though.

ive got the loony tunes ones, never bothered with the star wars ones

ohhh i remember those from primary school, but no they were just little rubber bracelet things

Pokemon cards were the big thing as well. I recall people collecting them, and the ultimate card was a Charizard. This was back then. Everyone would actually try and beat this kid's Charizard, so they can have it. The owner never wanted to give it away though. Yeah, I had Pokemon cards, and really god ones too. People would beg me to trade some for another card. That being said, I was not part of the whole "playing" cards thing, but it was a fad. Beyblades became a fad later in the years, and I hated those things. They were those things that would spin, and have different monsters associated with them. They were just so frickin annoying! I can remember Yugioh, and as well as marbles in the earlier years. I would say the biggest craze was Pokemon and 2nd to that was those god damn spinning beyblades. All this was when I was young, and I think I only played some pokemon card games. I was not exactly crazy about that, and people would threaten to steal other cards. I just stopped bringing mine because of that. Oh something else that was annoying, and got banned from the school was floor hockey. They would make a ball out of tape and start playing floor hockey in the class with it. Ah, those times were so lame, because most people got hurt.

it was when my brother was in school they were the in thing, he had fucking loads of them, and some rares, i was about ready to go kick some kids head in for stealing one of them and upsetting my little bro :wacky:

think hes flogged them all on ebay now

Conkers
