When you have kids (or if you already have) would you prefer to give them a popular name, or a more uncommon name?

I would want to give my child a more uncommon but not unusual name so they wouldn't be one of 4 other kids with that name in their class.

However, the name Isabella is very popular right now and I love it. :( I might love it enough to not care that it is very popular right now. I like the names Tiffany and Kimberly too which were more 90's.

hmm im gonna say

Boy Common: Mark (or in my case Jr.) - yes i will name my child after me so i can call him junior :mokken:
Boy Uncommon: William - Haven't heard a william in a while

Girl Common: Lisa - no real reason i just like it :monster:
Girl uncommon: Lynne - Mums name

ofcourse if i do have a kid my girlfriend/wife would disagree with everything i say as i talk utter bullshit :hmph:

Seems like Rids posted that half through :lew:

This may sound odd but If I have a son id like him to be known as Ecthelion its such a cool name! Theo for short:monster:

Or a daughter..........Im partial too Sophia or If Im still in my LOTR phase Arwen or Eowyn.

But in the future we wont have names, we will have Serial Numbers.

I always prefered uncommon names.

I don't want to name them something totally out there and different that they'll be made fun of though.

I just want them to have a name that no one has heard of and at the same time I want people to think, 'Wow that's an awesome name!'

Common names like Matthew, Jessica, Sarah, Daniel etc are so common. It's like the kid pops out and the parent goes, hmm 'Yeah that'll do.' and the poor thing goes through school with a million other kids with the same name.

It's amazing how many people leave naming their kid till the last minute.

Steve and I already have our kids names picked out and we don't even intend on having any. XD But in the rare chance that we do have one we're set.

Id just go with a name i like. Not gunna search for something unique and random that hardly anyone will have heard. I think if i had a boy id probadly want to call him andrew. Its my middle name and was my grandfathers name, ive alwyas liked it. A girl? No idea, the wife can think up some names and il either approve or dissaprove.

I always had a few in mind that i really liked. Very uncommon, where two are probably to the point where probably no one within 100km radius has it.

I was always partial to Desiree, which ill probably go with for girls. That is more common that Irae or Dies (pronounced Dee es). They probably might cop a lot for it though if i named them that.

As for boys.... i have no idea. You can say im probably gonna be a daughter type of parent, favouring the girls XD

The thought of having kids is still far off at the moment and I have little idea at this point of what I'd want to call them. Like Lew, I'll probably just settle for whatever name I'm particularly fond of. I have no real qualms with the more common names such as Jack or Kate, but I would nevertheless still want a child to have a more interesting name that is still very memorable but won't get him or her confused with the many other Jacks and Kates out there. But if there is one thing I would never do, it would be naming a child after some random oddly-named character from an anime series or movie that I happen to be a fan of at that particular moment in time.

Naming after books and games cropped up a lot in the Bad child names thread too. I think there was luigi and mario and the Lord of the Rings one.

oh gawd, naming your kids after a Video Game character would be a big no on my book.

I favor common or uncommon names, I don't really care, so long as it's not outlandish (like the time I mentioned a boy who's first and middle name was Prime Minister)

Since I'm most likely going to get a girl when I have children (within the next 10 years) I'm most likely going to name her Estelle.

Yes the naming of children after anime, game, movie etc characters is rather immature on the parents part.

I mean, if you so desperately want to name something after your favourite character, why not choose a pet or something? So long as the name is not that out there and ridiculous for a child to be named, then go for it.

But I mean Sailor Moon? Nymphadora?

Some people are just so hell bent on giving their kids ridiculous names in order to either satisfy their own wierd fetish, or to just beat another parent at the 'naming my kid a freakin' dumbass name contest', that they don't even consider the crap the poor thing is going to go through once it starts school and after. =/

Indeed. -__- Sometimes Parent's are just plain crazy, I swear.

At least me and my brother don't have that problem, and my brother has the more uncommon name (Kristoff)

I wouldn't hang myself from a tree if I had to settle with a common name with my wife / girlfriend / whatever if in the future the world was ever unfortunate enough to spawn an Argorbaby.

That said, I'd really much prefer to have an unusual name so that they may stand out a little bit, or perhaps have meaning. I wouldn't want to just open up a baby name book, twirl my finger around in the air and then fire it downwards and yell "bam! This boy will be named Daniel!" (picked my own name for this example, so that I don't offend anyone else by picking their names :brooding:). I'd rather pick something which I like the meaning of, or perhaps something which has personal meaning to me and my partner, or perhaps a name used by another person who we like the story of (folk / mythological stories as opposed to weird and messed up fictional names).

I'd much rather prefer an unique but, not over the top name for my kid. I always hated having 5 "Ashley's." in the same class it just always bugged me so, I really would choose carefully if sometime in the future I decide to have a kid. I'm actually really horrible when it comes to name's but, i'm in no rush xD.

I do agree with Lew and Olivia though. If i'm gonna have a kid i would want a name that both me and my partner like. It's just easier that way. Like i know my mom and dad argued a lot over my name XD.

I would probably pick common Irish names

For a boy probably Cillian, Oisin, Eoghan or Cian

For a girl Cliodhna, Oona/Oonagh, Caoimhe or Ciara

But knowing my luck I will end up with someone who won't let me have a say because they will probably think I will call them stupid names.

There's a load of people name Liam in my school it's that bad that if you shout Liam about twenty people will turn around and ask you what you want. It's funny in class though the teacher asks Liam to answer a question and three people answer at once.

If i am going to name a BOY i will call him: Philip.
If i am going to name a GIRL i will call her: Luna.

Because in the past two years i haven't met anyone with these names

If I ever have kids, I'm gonna name the girl Maizy and the boy Jack. Not because they're unpopular/common, but because I like them.

I would much rather they have an uncommon name than a common one, however they do not need to have the most unique name ever. I'm somewhat fond of Latin, Greek, and English names.

Boy:
Alphonse (this one's from Full Metal Alchemist, but it's a perfectly reasonable name), Vigil, Vincent

Girl:
Sybil, Augusta (there was this girl I worked with over the summer by this name. She was HOT), Juniper

These are really just what I can think of right now.

Augusta (there was this girl I worked with over the summer by this name. She was HOT)

Thats rather.........odd:hmmm:

I like the tradition of keeping family names alive with the new generation, It happens in my family, I have the name of my mothers little brother who died when he was 8:sad3:
and my niece has my mothers 1st & 2nd names.

But its not something we have to do, its just nice when it is.

Comic book Heroes:lew: there are some good kid names:

Hulk Spiderman Smith

Thor Thing Johnson

I like Jade for a girl too?

I tend to favor more uncommon names in general. I own quite a few baby name books since I write a lot and while I'm looking through them, I notice a lot of names that I've never heard before. I really like some of them. Of course, I wouldn't give my child a name that's impossible to pronounce or that would likely result in people making fun of her/him throughout their childhood.

There are some fairly common names that I still like and/or think are nice as well though.
