Massive solar storm to hit Earth in 2012 with 'force of 100m bombs'

Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive flare this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet's power grid.

Despite its rebuttal, NASA's been watching out for this storm since 2006 and reports from the US this week claim the storms could hit on that most Hollywood of disaster dates - 2012.

Similar storms back in 1859 and 1921 caused worldwide chaos, wiping out telegraph wires on a massive scale. The 2012 storm has the potential to be even more disruptive.

"The general consensus among general astronomers (and certainly solar astronomers) is that this coming Solar maximum (2012 but possibly later into 2013) will be the most violent in 100 years," News.com.au quoted astronomy lecturer and columnist Dave Reneke as saying.

"A bold statement and one taken seriously by those it will affect most, namely airline companies, communications companies and anyone working with modern GPS systems.

"They can even trip circuit breakers and knock out orbiting satellites, as has already been done this year," added Reneke.

No one really knows what effect the 2012-2013 Solar Max will have on today's digital-reliant society.

Dr Richard Fisher, director of NASA's Heliophysics division, told Reneke the super storm would hit like "a bolt of lightning", causing catastrophic consequences for the world's health, emergency services and national security unless precautions are taken.

NASA said that a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences found that if a similar storm occurred today, it could cause "1 to 2 trillion dollars in damages to society's high-tech infrastructure and require four to 10 years for complete recovery".

The reason for the concern comes as the sun enters a phase known as Solar Cycle 24.

Most experts agree, although those who put the date of Solar Max in 2012 are getting the most press.

They claim satellites will be aged by 50 years, rendering GPS even more useless than ever, and the blast will have the equivalent energy of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

"We know it is coming but we don't know how bad it is going to be," Fisher told Reneke.

"Systems will just not work. The flares change the magnetic field on the Earth and it's rapid, just like a lightning bolt. That's the solar effect," he added.

The findings are published in the most recent issue of Australasian Science. (ANI)

As long as I don't die, I'm all good.

Seriously, that's crazy though. It'll be interesting to see how bad or how not so bad it is because we really can't predict anything. And it's always fun to see the panic spread. You know, like Y2K and whatnot. Sun, just don't go killing us yet.

Same here, as long as I don't die I won't be pissed. I am too young, and I don't care. I want to grow old, forget stuff, have pointless grandpa chit chats and all that stuff old people do.:mokken:

I would be extremely furious (no, horrendously and catastrophically enraged) if I died, and if there's a heaven/hell, then expect me to be a royal pain in their divine ass to whoever meets me first. :hmph:

Oh well, it seems that 2012 is gonna be a year to expect a lot of religious propaganda hitting our doors. I don't really need facebook, twitter, or myspace (maybe Facebook and MSN a bit). I could always go back to writing for real, like with pen and paper, like we used to do in the past. :wacky:

If you ever browse and science website (one with news about research etc), you'll know loads of crazy shit gets released every day. Just like this.

Peculiar to be sure, but it's getting hyped up for 2012. I'm fairly sure I'll be alive on the 22nd of December 2012 and that will bring major lulz.

It won't. It's compared to the solar storm of 1921 but a bit stronger. The worse this will most likely do is knock out every electronic thing we have--which will cause a panic for water companies and such. However, this storm could possibly cook the earth to the point where it's like a cookie in a microwave... which would be bad. The only possible way to be safe from something like that is if you're in a cave or underground.

And, I might as well just throw this out there. There's a conspiracy theory in America that involves the government buying out old rocket silos that go hundreds of feet underground. Now, this might sound insane to others. But, we have documents and people that outright openly say they're making these rocket silos into safe havens for when the sun bakes the earth. So, it's not really a conspiracy now that the government has admitted it.

Just google Denver airport conspiracy and you'll know more than enough information about this to the point of it almost chilling your blood.

Now I feel more relieved that I am joining the ARMY. So if I probably get killed before that happens, I'll still be pissed and start kicking divine/hellish asses up/down/left/right.

But hey, the same hype was during Y2K and we are still here. But if the Earth turns into a Matrix-esque world, then I guess we start shaving our heads and get used to have stuff plugged into our brains. -__-

Nah, this all sounds a bit too coincidental. Of all the times it would happen, why 2012? Which just so happens to be the most controversial date today concerning natural disasters. Also, regarding the 'spectacular light shows earlier this month', are they talking about the Perseids Meteor shower that happened on the 12th? That's a reoccurring yearly event... It's not caused by something else.

I dunno.. it sounds really fishy. The most I'm hoping for is massive eternal electrical black out across the world. I really don't feel like dying after putting so much time, effort and money into bringing me and my bf back together, only to die before I get to marry and have kids with him.

They've been predicting this since 2006. It's natural. :gasp: But, I agree. It is an odd coincidence.

Yeah, I haven't put much effort on crawling my way up to a career just to die only a year before starting to enjoy the benefits of the hard work. That and the fact that I am still trying to win the heart of the girl of my dreams.

For once, I just hope all this is a bunch of bollocks, that scientist are just playing guessing games and never agree on anything, and that we will only have a massive black out. No big deal as long as we are still here. Besides, humanity has proved to be a stubborn race so, extinction? Nah.

I am currently now reading all the information I can get. I don't trust NASA that much but I guess it is better than asking your nearby local priest. -__-

From the NASA.gov website:

2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End?
11.06.09

Scenes from the motion picture "2012." Courtesy Columbia Pictures. Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could a phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth?
A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

"There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there..."
- Don Yeomans, NASA senior research scientist
Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?
A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the earth’s crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?
A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway.

Earth, as seen in the Blue Marble: Next Generation collection of images, showing the color of the planet's surface in high resolution. This image shows South America from September 2004. Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?
A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of pending doomsday?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?
A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.

Now I feel much better. :)

Those scientists are fucking morons, nothing is going to happen.
Nor is the government buying silos to hide in when the sun explodes, that's just some batshit insane Alex Jones-esque thing, like Obama being a muslim or a communist or a terrorist, or a vegetarian.

Nothing is going to happen, scientists are cunts and don't know what they're on about. They're always thinking up new shit so they can appear on TV and in newspapers, either to feed their egos or to secure more funding.

nt flmn r trlln.

LOL Forty6 and 2 is right, I saw this prediction on National Geographic channel ages ago, someone posted the thing about 2012 end of malayan calendar and the same day i saw the programme on tv about the solar flare predicting it will hit us 2012, I was like no way , huge coincidence but quite frankly I do not believe in coincidences.

Also our magnetic pole/grid is slowly shifting to its other side, already huge holes has been reported at certain spots (luckily on ocean parts like bermuda triangle maybe) so far. this solar flare could further damage our magnetic field !! thus radiation from the sun will cause cancers etc...

I am highly interested in programmes like KNOWN UNIVERSE and everything about space and earth involving the dangers of space..This is extremely interesting..

Depending on the force of this upcoming solar flare we could be in much trouble...

I bet you guys forgot about our magnetic field, the one thing that protects us from the sun's radiation and solar flare's ,bursts and storms... this will affect it im sure of it... it will be aurora lights like at the north pole all over the world.. I hope to see that :awesome:

Yeah much trouble your not fucking joking!

The earth has A finite amount of Atmosphere and much of it is concentrated with Co2, the last thing you want heading towards a planet like our in its current state is a wave of freakin charged Ions travelling at 10's of thousands of Kilometers a second interacting with a volatile mixe of cold oxygen and heavy Co2!

This place(earth) would be lit up like a christmas tree!

Is what I would like to say.....it would more than likely just dimish a highlyy eroded atmosphere and bring gap between viable life sustaining environment to Hostile baran wasteland just that little bit closer.

150 million Kilometers may sound like a lot but not at 0.03% of the speed of light, a wave travelling at that velocity from an extremely active sun cycle could spell the doom of our Civilization.

A lot of energy will dissipate over that distance, but consider the Sun is 1 million times the siz of the earth, it will be releasing energy from a surface location from between 50 to 100 times the size of the earth!

A Coronal mass ejection of that size can severely diminish the atmosphere........but as long as guys dont die.....lol

I never even heard of this flare that happened this month. But a solar storm bahhhhhhhhh. How about scientists just stop making predictions on how were all gonna die and build something useful with there time.

2012? what happend with 6/6/06? what happened with Y2K? internet rumours god i love these :mokken: still scares me though when you read about them :hmmm:

EDIT: also didnt this "solar storm" happe in the film knowing?

this is not a rumour lol, its based on facts..this has nothing to do with the movie 2012 or the calendar of the Maya's / mayalans etc...

Go watch discovery channel and national geographic channell more......

and yes in the movie KNOWING they exaggerated their solar storm/flare

I posted this vid rather than the fawx (Fox :P) vid because I think CNN is a better news source, but there's the story.

Honestly, there is always going to be something out there to scare us. Its a scary world. You could die in a car accident going out to get the groceries or get hit by lightning out golfing...my point is...are you going to spend the rest of your life worrying about things you cannot control? If it happens, it happens. Yes, it will suck. Just like Katrina, the oil spill, and the Earthquake in Haiti, disasters will happen and some will claim lives while others will survive. This world will eat you alive with worry if you let it.

I remember readuing about a solar storm. You can bet your sweet ass I'm doing whatever it takes to not die etc. etc.

All of thee rumours are just another way to scare us. The worst part for me is. I hear all these stories, but I don't see anyone building something useful like a lazer that could break apart a meteor headed for us, or some kind of sheild or something that would counteract this storm. All in all, I say humanity's fucked reguardless. We're already so messed up (violence, war and what not), maybe we need a change :hmmm:

While I can see where a solar storm causing damage to the complex digital systems we now use to run the world could be devastating, it would also be completely ridiculous if our whole society crashed as a result. After all, if we have the collective intelligence to create such high-tech systems, then logically we should also have several manual backup systems in place that are completely unreliant on advanced technology. Right? *relaxes in lawn chair and kicks off flipflops*

In all seriousness though, if anyone thought this were going to be a serious problem, or that the statistics were definite, then (again using logical theory) there would be an impromptu speech by the president right as soon as the news was released; it would be all over the major and local news networks, just like the 24/7 reporting style we get when there are massive hurricanes down here; and all the gas stations and water bottle shelves at the grocery stores would be empty, even this far ahead. The fact that this was a trifling news report in a science section, rather than a major headline, means that someone at the news agency was likely bored and wanted to stir up some more profits. Honestly, whenever a particular date is selected or predicted to be apocalyptic, there is a far greater chance that the panic created by it will turn it into a self-fulfilling prophecy, than that the actual natural phenomena will cause the greatest disturbance. That's honestly what I'm more afraid of than anything. If people can get trampled to death in a Wal-mart during the winter holidays, then one can only imagine how the populace would behave in a time of crisis...

Well, the latter isn't true but the government is buying Rocket Silos.

But, I agree. Nothing is going to happen. They always pull the scare factor. Although, my Grandfather works for NASA I could always ask. :mokken:

Not this again... Predictions only have a certain chance of success. And the whole Mayan calendar shiz that inspired this. It's not specifically stated that it means the end of the world. It's just when the calendar ends. This whole debacle is fear-mongering from frightened people who don't like what they don't know.
