So I didnt see anything about this and figured it would start a conversation on the boards :)

Just like the topic says, what are your thoughts on trophies/achievements in videogames. Since the release of the current gen of consoles these have been a crucial part of games and its hard to not find a game that has them implemented (besides early PS3 games of course) so lets hear your thought. Like them? Hate them? We wanna know!

My opinion? They have made gaming 100% more enjoyable for me. Not saying I have ever hated playing games I just never had the urge to complete side missions to get a sword at the end of the game that im going to use for maybe the last boss fight. But now not only do I get the sword but I gain something that shows everyone "Hey look what I did" so I guess its just something to gloat about but its still fun to compare yourself to your friends to see who has done more in the game. I hope this isnt just a fad and that they continue with these on the PS4 and Xbox 720.

I used to love collecting trophies. Every time the little unlock message popped up, I'd be so excited I'd jump out the window. Lately though, I haven't cared so much about collecting them.
While trophies are normally fun to collect, there are those that are really tedious and don't add to a game at all. Collecting every one of those shards in Infamous is one example...pure torture.
But there are those trophies that help you get the most out of a game, when you probably wouldn't play the sidequests at all (like you said).

Overall I think they were a grand development in gaming.

(Not my best post :wacky: )

I personally Love them to a point!

Like for instance the "Get 3 headshots(quickly) while in precision mode" in Infamous 2, I've spent hours trying to get it and my godddd its like impossible to aim and hit them all, if you miss it uses up alot of freaking energy even with max.

I don't mind them being semi hard but next to impossible without some kind of max/unlimited buff can be annoying, I do like how you can be a show off with your trophies to show you actually work for your bragging rights xD.

Edit Sprout thats not that hard actually, just do all the side quests and you'll unlock the Blast Shard Finder that always shows the ones your missing, just keep following the blue icon and it'll lead you to one, do it again and again and you'll find them easy

I'm sure this was only in Infamous 2? I completed everything and didn't get the blast shard finder in the 1st. I remember it being a bit of a buggy game though so who knows.

Ahh my bad then D: didn't know it wasn't in I1, should be guides to finding them on youtube o.o

Yep there are, but if you miss one shard, you pretty much have to follow the guide to the letter (or...video clip :lew: ) or you will miss one and have to start all over again. It's just...effort.

Personally, I love to collect trophies. It's come to a point where if a game doesn't have trophies, it's not as appealing to me. Sad, but true. xD;

With that said, some trophies are just plain annoying and tedious to obtain (as Greeny mentioned). For instance, in ACII, I think I had to collect like 100 bird feathers or something... yeaaah, it was pretty annoying being able to exactly locate each one, and I had to refer to some YouTube videos and guides to help me out. Which in all honesty makes me feel like even more of a cheater. It's worse enough that I've always been one to use strategy guides.. -___-;

I guess it's worth it in the end to have a high PSN level and compare trophies/progress with others, but sometimes I do wonder if I'm more interested in merely achieving trophies as opposed to actually beating the game... ^^;

I got Infamous for free during the great Playstation outage of 2011 (lol) and I did this trophy and it was very tedious but I did use a guide to find them. It would almost be impossible without a guide.

This right here is a sad thing because I also suffer from these. As much as it hurts my very being because its one of my favorite series I have never completed Metal Gear Solid 4, because it doesnt have any trophies. You would figure with the amount of people who love MGS they would patch the game to put some sort of trophies in it. They did it for Uncharted so why not MGS4?

I guess I don't really care either way, though I don't dislike them. One can simply ignore the system if they want, so I don't see any downside to trophies and achievements. There's times where I would actually like to collect some trophies for the heck of it, and there was only one game in which I was actually serious about getting the platinum trophy -----> Mass Effect 2. I came really close (I think I had one or two trophies left), but it requires a 2nd playthrough in order to platinum the game. I have too many games I need to finish first though before considering a second playthrough, and I certainly don't play games for the sake of trophies alone.

There was also The Last Remnant for the XBox 360. I think I'm missing two achievements.

But generally I like to play just to play, and none of this statistics stuff. It becomes too tedious and almost like a chore, which takes out the fun for me. So while I do like collecting trophies (though I prefer the notification sound for XBox...that one always got me excited), if it's something that requires too much time and effort, then I'll shrug it off and continue with my gaming business. There's no room for stressing out or putting too much weight on it. I play games because I want to relax and chill down for the night, mainly.

I enjoy them sometimes, but they are a lot less fun on a console like the PS3 or Xbox as there tend to be quite a few achievements that can only be obtained through multiplayer or matchmaking and there are just so few achievements

I personally think that World of Warcraft probably has the best implementation of an achievement system. There are a lot of achievements, and all of them have a varying degree of challenge, which can test your patience, luck, skill, and/or dedication. It's just never quite the same when I sit down and decide I want to get achievements on my xbox.

I love the Achievements feature on teh Xbox 360.

I love how it does give you a sense of accomplishment when you pull off a spectacular feat in a game. The other part that gets me is that it is bragging rights to show off to others on your list how well you've done in games. You've done something maybe some of the others haven't been able to pull off yet. I don't think the amount of Gamerscore actually means much since games can place a ton of easy games and rack up the score, but there are one's that are seeminglt imp[ossible to obtain and when you finally get it, it's a big relief.

I hope they carry over to the next generation of gaming at the end of the year.

At first, I didn't really care about gaining achievements. I just didn't really notice or care. Suddenly about 2 weeks ago, I had the urge to want to get as many achievements as I could. So now, I do very much care about achievements. I'm on a mission to unlock all of them in all my games.

I think it's a good idea. It adds more like most have said. It also feeds my video game addiction, so that's nice.

I will be honest, I don't really care about trophies.
I mean some are just "ohh cool"
But I am not going go out of my way to try some of them, I mean if I get the trophies cool, if not, ahh well.

I'm not fussed about actually collecting trophies but I do like them. Sometimes I find getting them fun, specially when I've accidentally gotten one or done something rare or cool that I didn't realise and I suddenly get a trophy for it. I think it's made games for a lot of people a lot more fun and gives people a reason to go back and do everything. I wont ever be platting a game I don't think but I am glad it's brought new elements to games for others.

I think I'm a bit on the fence about trophies and achievements...

Usually in my first playthrough I go through and play the game and I don't worry about getting them because I'm just trying to enjoy the game.When I'm finally done with the game I'll actually look at the trophies and from there decide if it's really worth it going back to get them to platinum the game. Usually they end up prolonging the life of the game for me and give me something to do when I've completed it, so I like that...however they can make the game really shite and annoying even after the first playthrough, like RE5's did for me. Trophies that make you play through the game on all different levels of difficulty are really ridiculous imo, so I didn't bother trying to plat that game.

I'm pretty much neutral to them. They're a nice addition and I can definitely see how they can enhance your gaming experience, but I'm not about to sing their praises, because, well, I rarely bother with them. I have attempted to aim for a platinum trophy with Assassin's Creed 2, but with my personal life at the moment, I haven't much time or will to sit down and play anything, let alone gun for trophies.

I'm pretty much satisfied with completing a game and doing a decent chunk of its side content. If there were trophies involved, cool. I'm not expecting ever to earn a platinum trophy and that's fine by me.

i love them, they make me play the game much more thoroughly than i normally would. Ive also come to expect them, like when i finish a chapter of a game or whatever im just patiently waiting for that beautiful noise to come on and tell what i unlocked, and when it doesn't happen i want to break my tv. haha

Achievments/Trophys are a blessing to this gaming generation, as much as dlc has destroyed gaming along with 2nd party dlc called disc locked content. Achievments and Trophys are the only thing next to better graphics thats gone right with the current gen. Getting back on topic have both a ps3 and a 360 and honestly I dont care aout trophies but I care about achievments. Ill explain myself of course, I think someone mentioned having bragging rights for getting such achievments. the thing is I wanna show everything off even to strangers who just tae one glance at my profile and see. mainly having a gamerscore on the 360 and nothing on ps3 along with I play online on 360 more anyway so I cant really care about the trophies since i rather beat the game and not waste more time with anything else.
#60 however I love havin a gamerscore and the acievments sit me perfect. past generation when we didnt have this stuff we had to guess if we 100% beat the game unless the game shows you your progress. Aside from progress I used to always try to make up something to do like kill a thousand monsters, kill this boss without using skills,etc. Now having games come with challenges and we get rewarded a gamerscore in the process is friggin awsome to me. Im a cocky person and Im proud to say I have 18 games listed in my completed section. I dont download anyhting for those easy arcade ahievments except for castlevania sotn but i really just wanted to play it again. HoweverI always say to myself I wa achievments thats a pain in the ass and is hard for everyone else to get to ay that I have it and you dont. I also love taking games online and if its something competitve, I like that i go in battling with majorit of te achievments just to show the person I justbeat this is why you lost, I know what im doing since I have this and that.

Despite all of that, I dont think some achievments are al fine and dandy such as majority of star ocean the last hope...Im insane when it comes to achievments and even I found myself hating the ones on star ocean. Achievments are good, and for the people that do like trophys yeah you dont have a gamerscore (which mainly is my reason for sticking with achievments) withoutthe gamerscore the concept is the same, people who love trophies miht feel just like I do. Its a sense of acomplishment but the important thing is bragging rights and trust me it feels good when you 100% beat a game. Im forgetting the most important detail of all but they offer replay value to a game, since some require you to actually beat a game twice or you need to replay it to get what you missed.
