T’is the month before Christmas, and all through the forum,
Not a member is posting, not even without decorum;
Yet members still log in and observe with care,
In hopes that FFF activities soon will be there;
The members are busy or bored with their kind;
While visions of moogle murderers dance in their minds…

“What?!”

Sir Mogathon Pomcroft, the disgraced 9th Earl of Mogton, yells from his prison cell.

“May I not compose a satirical poem about the place which condemned me to rot for the minor and rather trivial offence of committing a murder, kup-O?”

The condemned moogle looks out of his prison cell window overlooking a dreamy, snowy landscape. A rolling tear warms his cheek before freezing and sticking to his fur. His pathetic sigh is sharply invaded by a...

FFF Mythology Manual - Faris: The Cross-dressed Captain.
Pirates Ahoy! Contextualising Piracy.

When the player encounters Captain Faris and her crew in FFV, it is immediately evident that she is a pirate; Faris possesses many of the signifiers which usually express 'pirate' in popular culture.

Like most classic-era Final Fantasy characters, there are conflicting representations of Faris: her character artwork designed by Yoshitaka Amano (blonde and wearing a long ornamental black coat) and her in-game sprite (purple hair and green clothing). Faris' Amano appearance is preferred for the cinematic segments introduced in FF Anthology, but her sprite form is chosen for her World of Final Fantasy counterpart; both representations adhere to popular perceptions of piracy.

KupoCon Pomingham Palace (London 2018) SOLD OUT in 24 Hours!
If you blinked yesterday then you likely missed it!

There was a massive rush on tickets for KupoCon’s second London event (named Pomingham Palace) which is to take place on February 3rd, 2018. Tickets went live for purchase at 2:00 pm GMT and the majority of tickets sold within a number of hours after a feeding frenzy by fans.

24 hours later and ALL tickets were sold.

Firstly, KupoCon should be congratulated for a sell-out which is absolutely deserved. KupoCon far exceeded the expectations of Final Fantasy fans attending the first two events. High interest for Pomingham Palace is no surprise at all, but the speed at which the tickets were sold is absolutely mind-bending! We hope this shall serve as a confidence boost which can lead to many more...

KupoCon, Mind the Pom: A write-up

A little over a week ago the KupoCon event in London (named Mind the Pom) proved to be a huge success.

I figured that a write-up of the experience is very important as I truly believe that every Final Fantasy fan needs to seriously consider letting KupoCon into their lives.

If for some reason you still aren’t sure what KupoCon is by now then check out the main thread (here), and the KupoCon website (here).

To be brief, KupoCon is an unofficial Final Fantasy fan gathering and not a convention in a conventional sense. At Mind the Pom there were artist and fan merchandise stalls, magnificent cosplayers, and there were special guests. Other than that KupoCon was self-aware that it was more of a Final Fantasy themed party than a standard convention… And it was great!

It is technically December, yet Mognap has not noticed. How could he? He has only just gone to bed after playing Final Fantasy XV late into the night.

Bells are ringing somewhere in the distance, but Mognap believes them to be a dream and rolls over. Perhaps they are a dream, for to a dream Mognap is smoothly transported!

Noctismog and the other mog-bros are taking a drive. Mognap is with them, and he makes sure that Mambo De Chocobo is on the car radio to the protest of the other mog-bros. They drive, they fish, and they camp and play games. Then they drive again.

Suddenly the radio crackles and is hijacked by an unskippable Tidus-laugh cover of the Moogle Theme.

‘Heeeeyyy! Make it stop, Kupo!’ Promptomog yells into Noctismog’s ear from the back of the car.

‘It won’t skip, Kupo!’ regrets Noctismog as he prods and slams at the radio buttons. Distracted, Noctismog crashes the car.

As the mog-bros stumble to their feet and wipe off the dirt, Mogrinch...

FFF Mythology Manual - Ixion: The Dark Horse of Djose!
Introduction: The Equine Experiment.

Within the pantheon of Final Fantasy’s summonable creatures Ixion does not often show himself (his first and most notable appearance being in Final Fantasy X); yet he’s clearly made an impression and maintains a modest fanbase. Unless specified, this article shall mainly be discussing the Final Fantasy X summon which set the standard on which other depictions of Ixion were based.

Ixion is presented as a robust unicorn possessing an elemental affiliation with lightning. When Ixion was introduced for the first time in Final Fantasy X he represented the element of lightning among the pantheon of Aeons (summons) which the summoner Yuna collected. Lined up next to popular fan favourites (Ifrit, fire; Shiva, ice; Bahamut, non-elemental) it becomes apparent that Ixion has replaced Final Fantasy’s staple lightning...

“10 years have passed, Kupo…” Mog laments as he wipes away a tear from his eye. The moogle then turns another page of the photo album dated to 2006.

“Aww. Little Moglet’s a newborn in this one, Kupo! Now he’s flying up trees with ease, and reaching heights where my own mortal body can no longer aspire, kupo!”

Mog sighs, then smiles nostalgically.

The moogle turns another page and examines another photograph. Suddenly, Mog’s smile grows, successfully conquering the other features of his face. He squeals with joy and does a happy jig.

“This day! I remember this too, kupo! The foundation of FFF! See how young the site looked back then, kupo!”

Mog puts down the album, leaps high into the air and does a triple back flip before landing on the tips of his toes.

“Yeeee! 10 years, kupo! A landmark Birthweek!”

Mog lunges out of the window and slides down the trunk of his tree-house. The rub of the bark surely hurts a lot, but Mog is euphoric and giggles the whole...

FFF Mythology Manual – Shiva: The Transcendent Snow Sorceress.
(an improved update of this article can be read in Timber Maniacs issue 2, pages 5-10)
Only a handful of summoned creatures are as ubiquitous within the Final Fantasy universe as Shiva. Since her first appearance in Final Fantasy III this mysterious female ice spirit has grown into a popular fan favourite and is a regular member of the FF pantheon (appearing in 11 of the 14 main numbered games released so far, and with numerous spin-off and sequel appearances).

Shiva usually takes the appearance of a young woman with light-blue skin. Her hair is often green although sometimes it is blonde, blue, or white. As an ice...

Christmas 2015

Separated from his party, the snow is Mogbert’s silent companion as he softly wades his way North. The expedition was a sure failure, the young moogle decides, losing track of the number of weeks he has been walking. As the moogle collapses like chocolate into soft ice cream, the wind steals the letter from his hands, seeming to suck Mogbert’s written wishes into the abyssal mouth of the night sky above him. Suddenly colourful waves of bright green, pink, and blue flash in the firmament, awakening the unconscious moogle from his milky blanket. The sky enjoyed its meal.

The distant jingling of bells disturb the silence of Mogbert’s snowy sepulchre. He looks up to notice a glowing red orb drawing closer and closer. As the mysterious orb reaches our moogle its illumination reveals a sleigh pulled by 9 chocobos, the front chocobo's beak providing the light. Mogbert slaps himself and buries his head...
FFFMM Halloween Special: Phantom Train and Doomtrain.

FFFMM Halloween Special -
Phantom Train and Doomtrain: Spooky Trains on Separate Tracks.

Ghost trains have captured the imaginations of many people. Not only are there real-world reports of haunted trains, but they appear in literature, and dark rides in theme parks and fairgrounds labelled as ‘Ghost Trains’ are a popular feature.

There are two minor recurring ghost train characters in the Final Fantasy franchise: Phantom Train (first appearing in Final Fantasy VI), and Doomtrain (first appearing in Final Fantasy VIII). The two trains may share the same general concept of eerie, supernatural sentience, and the Doomtrain may have been inspired partly by its predecessor, but they remain separate in that they do not share the same designs, and play very different roles. Phantom Train is usually a boss, whereas Doomtrain is a summon.

Halloween '15.

It was dark, save for the full moon. The sorrowful howl of a wolf shook the frightened Mog from his favourite tree. As Mog ran through the dark forest the trees grew faces and snapped and clawed at the poor moogle. ‘Home Sweet Home’, Mog thought as he leapt into his bed and pulled the sheets over his little head.

‘He he he!’, Mog heard.

Mog peeked warily. It was just his pumpkin-head on the windowsill.

‘B-but I don’t have a pumpkin-head, kupo!’ Mog gasped.

‘He he he!!!! Wark!!!’

The Headless Chocobo-Man leapt off his feathery steed and floated through the open window into the unfortunate moogle’s bedroom.

Mog awoke in a pool of sweat, clutching his own neck and begging for mercy.

‘A terrible nightmare, kupo!’

Mog decided that everybody on FFF should share his experience this Halloween!

It is now October and Halloween is approaching. Final Fantasy Forums shall be hosting a Halloween mini-event...
FFF Mythology Manual: Red XIII

FFF Mythology Manual - Red XIII: Nanaki the Native.
Red XIII is truly a contender for the most unique of playable characters in the Final Fantasy series. Appearing in FFVII and related compilation material, Red XIII (or Nanaki) is not only a member of a species other than human (a rare treat in a Final Fantasy game), but he is not even bipedal or humanoid. Perhaps one of character designer Tetsuya Nomura's most creative designs, Red XIII is a talking, red-furred, quadrupedal, feline-lupine hybrid with a flame at the tip of his tail.

s6NZNuu.png

Red is no beast, however, but a civilised, sentient, and well-spoken animal who proves to be far less bestial in action than many of the human inhabitants that he shares the world with. Red XIII is, instead, a beacon of moral wisdom.

Despite his originality, Red XIII is not regarded as a 'silly' comic relief character (unlike other...

FFF Mythology Manual - Wedge and Biggs: Opposing Forces.
Wedge and Biggs (also mistranslated as Vicks) are recurring names used for numerous characters in the Final Fantasy universe, most (though not all) of whom share the same standard traits. In any instalment of the franchise one might expect at some point to encounter a Wedge and Biggs (always appearing together). Most portrayals of Wedge and Biggs have the characters appear as a pair of guardsmen or soldiers, sharing an interest in technology or engineering, sometimes hopelessly pathetic at their jobs, and forming some of the game’s comic relief. In appearance the characters are typically generic guards, with no individualised character design (save for occasionally making Biggs taller and slimmer, and Wedge shorter and bulkier, or sometimes vice versa). At other times, however, Wedge and Biggs are given more important roles as a part of organisations that oppose the oppressive...

Birthweek 2015

Quina Quen drools over the cake as Golem’s stony hands struggle to hold Quina back from gobbling it up. Jumbo Cactuar springs upward towards the sky and then shoots nine carefully aimed needles onto the surface of the cake. Immediately after this a group of bombs float up to the needles, exploding flames onto the ends of each of them. As everybody watches with glee and delight Typhon enters the scene and with a hearty exhalation he blows the candles out (and a good portion of icing flies through the air with it and slides into Fat Chocobo’s carefully positioned beak). The tonberry which had been slowly edging towards the cake for the past hour finally reaches his destination.

Doink! Slice!

As the cake is portioned and shared moogles sing and dance merrily to the sound of flutes and harps, inviting us all to join in.

What’s the big occasion?

On June 6th Final Fantasy Forums will be 9 years old! Time for all of us to celebrate with...
FFF Mythology Manual: Alexander

FFF Mythology Manual - Alexander: Divine Defender.
Alexander is a very popular recurring summon in the Final Fantasy series. His appearance is that of a gigantic robot and often doubles as a mobilised fortress. Alexander is usually quadrupedal (or, more accurately, tripedal as his body sometimes serves as a third ‘leg’ in place of hind legs), and by his posture it is assumed that he moves about with his weight on his front limbs like a gorilla or some sort of a Mecha King Kong.

KpUalu3.png

Alexander’s signature ability is ‘Divine Judgement’ (also sometimes named as ‘Holy Judgement’ or ‘Justice’), and he casts Holy elemental damage on the enemies of the party. Amongst the pantheon of summons in the FF universe Alexander is one of the characters whose origins, and the logic behind his design, are most difficult to unravel. This article discusses some of the themes associated...
FFF Mythology Manual: Ultros

FFF Mythology Manual - Ultros: An unorthodox adaptation!
Anyone who has played Final Fantasy VI will be aware of a certain talkative, loveable, and yet terribly perverted purple octopus. The creature’s goofy teeth and mischievously sinister eyes make him one of the funniest, most iconic and expressive monster designs in the series. Although the party fights Ultros four times in the game, his role serves more as light comic-relief than as true sub-villain material for plotline importance. Whilst there will surely be some fans who are frustrated by the goofy character, Ultros has been so warmly received by other fans that he has since made several cameo appearances (and has even been retroactively inserted into remakes and re-releases of earlier FF titles). Ultros is something of an oddity within the FF franchise, and it isn’t always obvious where he hails from. Ultros has his namesake origins in Greek mythology, but other than a...

The Carbuncle: Reflections of obscurity.
(an improved update of this article can be read in Timber Maniacs issue 1, pages 11-16)

There are many familiar recurring creatures in the Final Fantasy universe whose return fans welcomely embrace. One of these creatures is the Carbuncle. Since its first proper appearance as a boss and summon in Final Fantasy V it has popped up numerous times as a helpful ally, usually known for casting the (sometimes) useful Reflect status effect on the player’s party, bouncing magic spells back towards the opponents. Final Fantasy XIV (and similarly FFXI) give the creature more attention, and it is gifted to the Arcanist class as a personal pet-companion (becoming Final Fantasy’s answer to Pikachu). Regardless of the varieties of the...

Somewhere up North there are reindeer clopping about, eating their magical feed and bathing in the energies of the Northern Lights. The stars are glistening blindingly above, but also act like a cosmic orchestra, chiming a crisp, melodic soundtrack which pierces the otherwise silent, snowy landscape. Inside, there are sleigh-bells being shaken, tested, and approved for use. A large, red-faced, jovial man is chuckling ceaselessly as a collection of diminutive elves sew a big, red costume and start to wheel in large carts filled with letters, all in tune with the jolly music being provided by an in-house band. Either we’re dreaming, or Christmas must be approaching!

I hear groans from the back there that we’re still in November, but we thought that we’d give a heads up regarding our numerous plans for Christmas related competitions and events here on Final Fantasy Forums. This year there will be a number of returning favourites (Secret Santa, White Elephant, Candy...
