A Chinese man has died after going without sleep and eating little food sleep during a three-day online gaming session.

BBC News reports that the 30-year-old unidentified male lost consciousness in an internet cafe on the outskirts of Beijing.

Local reports claimed that the victim was rushed to hospital but couldn't be revived. It added that he had spent more than £900 on gaming in the month prior to his death.

In 2005, a 28-year-old man died in South Korea in similar circumstances when he played online games for 50 hours without taking a break.

Wow.

Just wow.

Now that's what I call obsession. :ffs:

It's sad to think this happened and yet there are others out there in the world who are probably worse. They won't heed any advice and could potentially harm themselves. It really does bring up the old topic of how often you should play video games.

Back when I was able to be obsessed with a game I could go hard core length(?) on some games........you just have to get that next item even knowing the drop rate of a particular item doesnt help.

I went long hours but I always had loads to feed myself with and drink......wait 900 Pounds? thats around $1700 FFS!!! thats a fridge, washer and dryer:lew:

Hah! yeah, Mal-nu-tri-tion~ .... or Dehydration~

I couldn't survive 2 days without eating or drinking.

To top it off the fact that they were old enough to be parents~

That probably's the worst age for it, unlike a teenager or, like, any age group that still (on average) lives with their parents, you don't have parents telling ya "y'know what, that's enough" and throwing threats to disconnect the internet and that.

Older folk are getting into it, I've even heard of cases where married couples get addicted to MMORPGs, and if I remember, ages ago, someone made a thread about a mum and dad whose kid died because they were to addicted to WoW and forgot to feed it?

Brutal as it sounds, mind, I don't have much sympathy for the bloke, and it annoys me if people go all "meeh, it's an addiction, they need help!" No, it may be an addiction, but the only person who can help them is his or her self. They need to learn when to say enough is enough, else quite frankly, if they don't have the self control, then they shouldn't be gaming.

It's pretty sad to hear about people dying as a result of their obsession. I just hope the news isn't lapped up by certain organisations that seem desperate to class games as being the spawn of the devil.

At the end of the day though, it's obvious that this is more to do with the mental state of the individual in question. I can't even begin to imagine how anyone can ignore the protests of their body when the need for food, water and rest kicks in.

It's not unusual for this to happen, occurs regularly in fact, people can kill themselves over pressure from the obsession, it's sad yes, but not uncommon.

To top it off the fact that they were old enough to be parents~

OMG, that is really scary to think about :lew:

The stupid thing is, it's so easy to just get a pile of portable food and put it next to your computer o_O I mean isn't it? This doesn't even make any sense, I mean I start to feel hunger pains in my stomach long before I'm in danger of dying, and I'd think most people would feel that way too :hmmm: I'm amazed he was able to last as long as he did without keeling over just from the pain of having no food or water.

:ffs:

Really...I have no words. just....

This guy obviously had major issues...but my question is...how did this guy afford all that money for gaming in a month...and be able to not have a job, seem as though he went for like 72 hours straight gaming? I just can't imagine how playing a game would be more important than eating, sleeping and maybe even taking a bath or shower. Ohhh the priorities of people today...how I question them :gasp:

Can anyone explain to me how, like physically, how this happens? He was still eating, little as it was, but still, and died only after two days? Can't you physically live for at least a week without water, and two without food? How does this happen? And why no sleep? How do you die from no sleep?

I does not understand.

I'm not sure if it was the same Korean guy but I'm sure he was playing World of Warcraft when he died.

I have on obsession, with my PS2 and FFx, but I wouldn't go as far as to stay on it for 3-4 days with no food, drink or sleep...That would be taking it to new extremes.

There was another couple in Korea as well, that were going into an internet Cafe for hours on end playing Anima online (whatever it's called), and they left their baby at home, and because of neglect the baby died because of their obsession of the MMORPG.

So it really shows the extent to some peoples obsession to leave their baby at home to die and replace it with a load of pixels on a screen...Its saddening.

I'm not sure what's worse...this:

three-day online gaming session

or this:

in an internet cafe

Seriously...3 days in an internet cafe? Does that place not have employees there? If so, should they not have kicked the guy out after like 12 hours?

Definitely the dudes fault, don't get me wrong, and I'm not blaming the internet cafe for his stupidity. He was a plain as day idiot. I just find it hard to believe that no one noticed that he was sitting there for THREE days, well, at least enough to get the guy outta here.

I thought you could do without water for three days and food for a week?
You might be wondering, how come you can survive for 3 weeks without food and only 3 days without water?
Research - http://www.buzzle.com/articles/how-long-can-you-live-without-water.html

The dude died mostly because of the lack of sleep. the brain needs rest...combine these things..lack of food/water and sleep and he could have cardiac arrested or end up in coma..either way its bad...

Gaming is an addiction just like gambling...some people just overdo it like those parents who were busy raising a virtual kid rather than their real kid..

Stupidity etc.. what can you say..

This is sad, 3 days in an internet cafe? Hell even I know to take a rest after playing a game for that long. Pretty sad though

This may come across as a stupid question, but how could he spend three days straight in an internet cafe? I've never been to one myself, but surely they close for at least a few hours each night?

Its 24-7 in china baby...there are plenty cafe's/casino's open 24-7...oh yeah :ohoho:

To be honest I'm not surprised, I've heard several similar stories. I remember there was a rumor/urban legend thing about a guy who was playing an MMO, got stuck in a dungeon and decided to play until he got out, eventually he died irl, funny thing is he never escaped the dungeon.

While it does seem kind of odd that this man would die after 3 days, you have to consider the state of his health prior to this. Considering that the man had spent more than 900 pounds on gaming over the month prior to his death, then I'd be inclined to assume that this was not a one off event i.e. he was probably quite unhealthy. Still sad though..

he should have beaten off more to suppress his ambition :monster:

Can't really do that in an internet cafe though...

Or can you? :awesome:

--Serious part--

Here's the thing though, you know if this was in the US, the family of the dude would turn around and sue the internet cafe for not doing anything to stop him. And then, internet cafes would start enforcing strict guidelines, especially usage time. Now, I've never been to an internet cafe, so I don't know how they work. But I would imagine they generally don't care, as long as what you are doing is legal.

take your laptop into the bathroom

turn off the sound/use headphones

pass out on the shitter

???

profit :monster:

That is probably not the first time the guy went 3 days continually playing. Sad thing is it is quite common for addicts to go 3 days of continual play and then crash. After crash go back. The guy was probably in poor health before he started the session. Some do this while actually holding a job. They sneak play at work.

I had a horrible thought. Wonder if the guy took bathroom breaks.
