If you're an aspiring musician, stop reading now, this will be painful. Japan's Crypton Future Media has unleashed upon the world what may be the future of pop music in the amazingly realistic, holographic singing idol Hatsune Miku.

Hatsune is a product of Japan's popular Vocaloid software scene in which fans can create their own songs for fictional characters to sing. The twist here is that Crypton took things to the next level by making the character into a hologram and actually putting their avatar on tour, playing to huge enthusiastic audiences. The spectacle of a hologram performing on stage, with a live backing band in front of thousands of screaming fans is pure science fiction brought to real life. To really process exactly how amazing (and hauntingly creepy) the Hatsune Miku music tour is, take a look at the HD video below.

Am I the only one in the whole entire world that had no frickin' idea what the hell this was BEFORE this moment? :rage:

I hope there's a Cloud Strife coming soon :rage:

real 3d hologram?
OMG that is amazing ! I tell you those japanese are way ahead of us when it comes to imagination!!

You know Macross Plus>? the anime? they had a hologram singer in it as well, but this is IRL !!! sick shit man !!! awesome.

HOLY CRAP!!!!! DO you think They'll do Misa-Misa??? Omg I think a trend may start....And I might like it! :D

I thought it was cool! Hatsune is pretty cool. I only heard about her just a few months ago, but she's cool.

Plus, her song's are rockin! I had to add a few of her songs :p

Thats old news XD. THere was one i think last year? or it wasnt too long ago.

I love Miku. Some of the songs you can do with her is so great.

I like her a lot along with Saber XD

This sounds pretty cool, but I don't think it would ever replace real live musicians completely :hmmm: Otherwise what would all the groupies do? :lew:

Also, didn't the Gorillaz already do something like this, or weren't they planning to? :hmmm:

A fully articulated 3d hologram not just static but advanced movements through the form
this is a technological break through not to mention :awesome:!!!

I can see so many apps for this technology, fighting programs RTS combat games
too many to list unreal.............literally.

Lol that's pretty cool. But is it actually 3D though? It looks like it is just being projected onto a screen. On the far away shots it looks like there is a large blackish sheet thing between the crowd and the band and on the close shots it looks like the audiences glow sticks are being reflected off it.

Still pretty cool though, (like Gamingway said) I think the Gorillaz have done something similar.

cant say i find that cool or interesting in anyway tbh. Granted its a real person who sung the song but screw going to see that crap, nothing beats a live band especially some daft hologram

That's what I thought I saw too. I was really impressed at first and thought it was awesome (the idea, not the music itself) but then I noticed the glow sticks reflecting off of something, and then the screen revealed itself to me and I was disappointed. It looks as if it is a screen rather than a sci-fi style fully free-standing hologram.

That said, it would still be cool to see something like this live. Not to replace live bands at all, but to see animated characters sing and such. I'd love Final Fantasy characters to play like this, for example. It'll likely never happen though, and I guess I'll take all of that back as the only person they'll likely shove on stage would be Yuna, and I'd rather not see the FFX-2 opening again. :dead:

Its not someone live singing. Its a voice synthesizer. Someone supplied a vocal speech base and people uses a program to create songs with that voice. Its just that Miku is the mascot for that voice.

Hm... do you mean it is reflected off the glassy screen in the back to make it appear holographic?

I think they needed the screen to be able to project all 4 characters in the same concert. They've also got Lucca, Rin and Ren.

There was a machine in the middle of the stage which i suspect is the holographic projector. Its not pointing at the screens so im suspecting that may be how they materialise the vocaloids.
