There's no doubting it any longer -- Snake, hero of the Metal Gear Solid series, is the best character of all time. So said the readers of Famitsu magazine, who voted earlier this year on which video-game hero (or anti-hero) they liked the most. Snake beat out such noted video game icons as Mario, Link, and even Final Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife (gasp!) to take the top spot.

"Snake was completely silent until Metal Gear Solid, simply because the [8-bit platforms] didn't let you do speech," commented Hideo Kojima, producer of MGS and the "father" of Snake. "In MGS, Snake became this sharp-tongued, Lupin III-like guy who flirted with women and told lots of jokes; again, that was a side effect of the new speech technology we had. Once motion capture entered the picture, we were able to give Snake a lot more active ability, because the technology allowed it. Hardware has advanced by leaps and bounds over the past twenty years, and Snake's changed his look, personality, and even age to match what the platform could do. He's literally been raised within the battlefield inside your game console."

The top 50 finalists in the Famitsu character ranking are as follows:

1. Snake
2. Mario
3. Cloud Strife

21 Square-Enix characters in that list! Over 40% are SE's! That is actually quite a feat - although I don't tend to necessarily agree with Japan! :wacky:

I'm glad Snake won though. Better him than Cloud because I'm really not the biggest fan of Cloud. I tend to find him rather overrated. In terms of FF protagonists, there are stronger ones such as Terra and Zidane (not necessarily physical strength).

Thank you for the up, Ali! :tighthug:

EDIT: Speaking of which - why isn't Terra Branford on that list? Injustice! :mokken:

We can see why Cloud is on that list, even though we hate him. However, why is he above Link? Who's running the show down there at Famitsu? Recently their magazine has been crap. :mokken:

EDIT: Went back and read it again. Famitsu readers are retarded anyway. Voting FFX as the greatest game of all time... What a bunch of morons. :hmph:

I don't get that too. Link > Cloud because Cloud scared me in FFVII, whereas Link is just awesome.

FFX should be ONE of the best games of all time though IMO.

This list shows pretty conclusively that Famitsu (well, their readers, I suppose) is ignorant as hell when it comes to video games and is horribly biased towards mass produced Nintendo and Square characters no matter how bland and unoriginal they are. I mean seriously- Felynes? They put FELYNES on this list? How unbelievably stupid are these people? If all it takes is some cute little dancing mascot to be voted in the ranks of legends like Solid Snake and Ryu, that's a pretty sad forecast of the quality of games we will come to expect from Japan in the future.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, here's some characters that they conveniently missed which are at least as important and well designed as anyone on that list:

1. JC Denton (Deus Ex)
2. Master Chief (Halo)
3. Sarah Kerrigan (Starcraft)
4. Gordon Freeman (Half Life)
5. Samus Aran (Metroid)
6. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
7. Nico Bellic (GTA 4)
8. Arthas Menethil (Warcraft 3/World of Warcraft)
9. Kratos (God of War)
10. Kane (Command and Conquer)

When it comes to the popularity of western characters, well........Japan isn't usually that hot or enthusiastic towards them. Which is a shame because that's a LOT of great characters they have overlooked. :mokken:

Where's Edge? WHERE'S JANSEN???

Damnit, I have a thing for the womanizing characters. At least more so than the Aerith-types. Especially original FFVII Aerith. I. Hated. Her. Why is Yuffie on there anyway? She was worse than Aerith.

I think they just took the popular FFVII characters and copy + paste. It's a shame too, because I loved Red XIII. In fact, I think Red XIII should've gotten his own spin-off... more than Vincent anyway.

Actually most of them are Square's. Only two of the FF characters are SE's and Lightning was only on it because the game was released so recently.

Obviously the list is a lie because Kirby and Celes should have won. Pikachu and Chocobos made in on the list and they can't even talk.

Famitsu isn't to blame for this. The readers are.
Note the bolded words.

(y)

At least someone is reading correctly today.

Dante and Rikku made that list. Awesome. :awesome:

I actually think that these are fairly good choices... although with even Lulu being on there, and Terra not, doesn't seem fair.

Yay LOTS of SE characters and YUNA is on the list YAY! I knew my favorite FF character would get up there somehow. Also im very happy with this list! :awesome: Rikku got number 50? :gasp:

We didn't read it correctly the first time, then we went back and edited our post. However, we still can't get over how bias and slighty retarded the readers of that magazine are. :ffs:

First they vote FFX as the greatest game of all time, then they put Cloud ahead of Link with Snake as the greatest character of all time. Not only that, the majority of the characters on that list are from SE. Seriously, what the hell?

Solid Snake is a pretty amazing character. He really does deserve that spot, the amount of character development and presentation that went into his design makes most Japanese RPG characters look bland in comparison.

As for Tidus, Kirby, and Aerith? Well, the good news is at least they didn't win. The bad news is that they made this list at all.

Well a lot of the characters I like are on the list, so I'm good xD

But on the other hand, there's plenty of characters I don't really know. Like I know of them, but never played any of the games to really know them well enough to vote.

And I don't have one ultimate fave gaming character. I just can't decide, so I couldn't do a ranking myself or whose better or more deserving *shrugs*

Snake eh?? Haha he always was pretty badass in my eyes ^^ so i'm glad that he won that title of #1 of top 50.
The list isn't bad at all and from what i've seen from Japan's rating and whatnot, I usually tend to disagree though, there's lots of character's I like so there's no need for me to complain xD

I don't know whether I'm happy or disappointed because of this. On one hand I'm happy that Square Enix are doing well in terms of popularity but on the other it just seems that the Japanese market is extremely narrow with a lack of game developers or "quality" characters D:

It's good list in terms of characters from Japanese games. I haven't heard of most of them, but that's because I don't play a lot of the games they have over there which might be more obscure here, if released at all.

Some of the ones that are on there seem a bit random though.. I mean they're good characters, but I'm not sure if I'd vote to put them in a top 50.

The list would be very different if the Japanese played games from outside of Japan more often, but since they don't that explains why the list is like this.

I half expected at least one Uncharted character to make the list, since Uncharted 2 did surprisingly well in a Japanese magazine best games list recently (in a thread here somewhere, I forgot what it was now). It seems that this isn't the case, but ah well. Victor "Goddamn" Sullivan probably doesn't have a very good Japanese voice actor. :sad3:

Meh, this has even less weight than Gamefaqs' character battles, in my opinion. Still, its interesting to see Snake winning it...

Why is Sora above Link?

Why is Cloud above Link?

Link should be at least third on that list :hmph: This list is slightly outrageous. I have realized that Cloud is slightly overated now, and that he should be at least 5 down the list. Link has more notoriety than Cloud, in my opinion. This list is fan- service :grumpy:

Edit: Why are those hideous slimes above LINK!?
