"Lol" is definitely overused in mostly chat conversations, so this brings up the question: do you laugh out loud when you type "lol"?

I tend to type "lol" a lot, even if I'm not really laughing. If the person isn't talking about a topic not comical, sometimes I'll say "lol" just because I have nothing else to say. If I'm really laughing, I'll emphasize it with capitalization. I rarely type "rofl" or "lmao" but if it was really that funny I'd probably capitalize "lmao" and use that.

Usually I'll at least crack a smile. I personally don't use 'lmao' or 'rofl' very often, if ever, so if I grin or chuckle or something, it's 'lol'. If I actually do laugh out loud, it's usually 'LOL' for emphasis.

Sometimes. I get amused really easily and I actually will say lol sometimes. But trust that I at least chuckle when I do so.

i hate when people do this, they overuse it in the wrong context and i want to punch them in the face, i never like using instant message or text speak because it would make somebody sound retarded, but i think anybody who uses this out of context to many times should be forced to eat stale bran muffins, enough said

It depends on the topic. When I use "Lol" I don't actually laugh but I'll sometimes smile or grin. When I use "Lmao" or "Rofl" that means you've managed to make my smile broader or actually made me chuckle out loud. "LMFAO" or "ROFL" or "HAHAHAHA" means I've actually laughed out loud to the point that I can hardly type properly because I'm laughing too hard. <-- Those are quite rare but for the past few weeks I've laughed more online than I can count. =] Depends who I'm talking to, really.

Same here.

"Lol" is mostly a smile for me, a meant one, mind, but just a smile. However when I type "ROFL" or "LMFAO" I actually crack up really badly in real life, it's kinda sad how many times I've sat behind the computer talking to certain people, and then I go quiet, realizing I'm just laughing out of nowhere and it echoes in the house. (Not really) But... Yeah... Akward... xD!!

Heh. I'm amused rather easily.

:D

Only really say it on Msn put !!!! at the end off the lol on depending on who funny it is
" lol " is just like yeah had nothing else to post

lol!!! is a bit funny but nothing special

and then there is

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When i do actually laugh a bit

I'm extremely anti-chatspeak, and I never use "lol" or any of its equivalents. I do use smilies a great deal though, and quite often I am actually laughing when I indicate it. Which annoys my mother no end, because I indicate it a great deal sometimes...

Usually when I type 'lol' I at least think something is funny, I may not necessarily be laughing though. I may type 'lol' if if I am chuckling or something, but if I type lmao or rofl, you can rest assured that I am indeed laughing my ass off.

Usually, I'll type something like "LOL" or another allcap equivalent when I actually am lol'ing in person. If ever I use "lol", which isn't often, then it's usually a quickwrite thing as a means to convey my amusement. I'm laughing, but more-so on the inside. I would use "haha" in it's place, but I think people view that as sarcastic...

Mean Joe Green: ...Which is what I then told his mum!
Me: haha

See? So yeah, everything should be demoted in my use...
LOL ---> lol -----> haha, and then that'd be about right.

I usually just chuckle to myself whenever I say lol. And I chuckle to myself quite often. Sometimes I like to say Haha or something if I feel like the other person I'm talking to is getting the impression that I don't give a shit about what they're saying.

That is, if I actually do give two shits about what they're saying <_<

xD

I will only type 'lol' if I smile and think something is funny.

If the person manages to actually make me 'laugh out loud' I will probably type something like 'LMFAO' in caps lock or something to emphasise it.

People who say 'lol' when they speak though are freakin' idiots though. <_< I've come across a fair few in my time sadly.

Before, I used 'lol' during an awkward point in a conversation or if someone keeps talking, I type 'lol' to make it look like I'm not ignoring them.

These days though, I've tried to tone it down. When I smile or grin I'll use the respective smileys and when I do type 'lol' I am actually laughing.

At least that way, I'm being honest with people and they'll know how I'm reacting to them. IMO, it's better for both people to honest that way.

Also, I have only ever rolled around on the floor of a bouncy castle. :mokken:
I have never "R'dOFLMFAO".

I'm the same way, but there were times I get plain lazy and type lol just because it's so easy to do so, now I try to use the laughing smiley face (yahoo messenger) if i'm online...when it comes to texting I'll type
'hahaha" if the topic/joke was actually funny otherwise most people get this "........." from me

I honestly try to slap my hand when I put "lol" down on paper/online. I use it sooooo much, but to be quite honest I crack grins.. and that's about it. There have been those seldom times though where I'll laugh heartily, and usually use LOL - but of course I'll always exclaim how funny it was afterward.

It's lingo.. I still don't know who came up with all the acronyms. I just remember back when I was 11 or so playing a game called mage storm.. people would get so offended if I didn't put "AFK" when I stopped playing. This was the first time I heard ROFL.

I still hate that stupid acronym.

Nope, never. If im really laughing il type out 'hahaha' or whatever if i find it really funny itl be in capital letters. 'Lol' is a word i generally use when i have nothing to add to a conversation or if im pretty much uninterested in what the person is talking to me about. I see it as politer than saying nothing, which it isnt but ah well.

I don't usually really "lol" when I type it. I mostly just smile a little but if I do actually laugh I either type LOL! or LMAO. That's when you know I really did "lol" =D

I like haha much better then lol. I tend to laugh a lot so there is really no point in putting "lol" everytime I do. Sometimes if it's really funny i'll say lmao. Other then that not really :monster:

Most of the time, no. Though, there are some times where I literally laugh out loud. Usually, I'll simply toss that out when I simply do not have anything clever to throw back as response. It has become somewhat of a habit especially on MSN- which is probably the only platform on which I use chat-speak.
