Dealing with Non-Gamers

Haven't seen a thread like this,so I thought,"Oh,what the heck."

Anyway,this thread is about things that non-gamers have said about gaming that annoy you.Keep in mind it's only for things you've heard in the flesh.

For instance,I have had save point trouble.Like,I was a long way from the next save point,but my parents/whoever said I needed to stop so I lost all that progress...:banghead:

Happened a lot.
 
I had a professor who believed that video games are a waste of time. Yet, he teaches a computer graphics course in which even the textbook admits that video games are an application of computer graphics, and when I asked him to distinguish between a simulation and a game (because face it, flight simulator or shooting games and games like Myst aren't too different from simulations), he refused to answer.

I might have made him squirm a bit when I made suggestions to edutainment, particularly because I use it on regular video games to learn German, and it works.
 
I was in the library last year and a group of people were reading a newspaper - probably the Daily Mail for all I know - and I heard one of them say something about video games causing Britain to be violent.

To begin with, I'm fed up with how the media likes to scapegoat games for virtually anything if it involved deaths and violence. How about looking up on some of what studies have said first? As far as I know of, there's no conclusive evidence of games exacerbating violence on anything near a substantial level at all. If a person already has violent tendencies, a game is unlikely to make that person anymore violent and if anything, they're more likely to vent violent frustrations on a virtual world. There's also the massive claim made by that person in the library. So there had been no violence prior to the arrival of games? All games evoke violence from people? Not all games involve the ability to shoot innocent people or run over pedestrians anyway. A lot of reporters may want to play some games first, then decide to wade into video game controversies before misrepresenting this topic to a lot of non-gamers in the world.
 
What Olivia said. I find it laughable how Video Games are getting a completely different censorship treatment than movies. Films have explicit sex and violence, and the differentiating part of video games is the interaction. But said interaction does not influence the individual because the majority of games do not have an emotional impact. Film is a matured art, and it can effectively deliver an inspiring and provoking visual story that influence us to a certain degree. When I'm playing as Dante from Devil May Cry, I don't care about why he's killing these demons, nor do I care for his backstory. I only know that by destroying these moving animated objects I'll get the number of orbs that I want. Of course this is greatly effected by the game's poor quality in narrative. Video games are still maturing artistically and a good number of developers are taking the wrong direction of developing games that don't contribute much to the medium's evolution. For every Ico or Shadow of the Colossus we have 20 multiplayer zombie shooters devoid of meaning or emotion (speculation). While development and production firms should spread awareness of the medium's legitimacy as a growing art form, and make games that are meaningful, thought provoking and emotionally enthralling like movies, we get marketing campaigns like this:


Everything about this is wrong. As a game enthusiast who rather enjoyed the first Dead Space, I feel insulted watching this. Their target audience are 17 + and they gave us something that treat us like 11 year olds. Not only that, but they stain the image of gaming even more. And it's not like the first Dead Space contributed artistically, nor is it original in any sense. Pardon my pretentiousness but I enjoy a bit of mindless fun every now and then, but I do concede that a sequel is needless, especially if it's accompanied by offensive advertisement.

My point is, yes gaming's image is not widely understood and tolerated in everyone's eyes, but that's not due to only one side of the coin. It's up to the Video Game industry to educate others and better their image and it's up to us as gamers to support such a cause to move forward with the medium.
 
The media would love to have a legit excuse for murder and voilence. Something has to be to blame. It couldnt be the simple fact that some people are just tossers.
What bugs me is that gaming is seen as nerdy. 9/10 the people who claim this are just idiots trying to make themselves look cooler to the people they they respect. And usuallly this person(s) is exactly the same as them. What they like is cool and respectable but anything else is beaneth them.

That is how the world works is it not? We judge people upon what they do, what they enjoy etc? It's a form of stereotyping. I think people make a distinction between playing games like cod and games like FF, blowing up commies and arabos is relatively normal, we all enjoy a little violence. But going around slaying dragons and beasties is a bit weird. If people ask me, which is rare because everyone thinks I'm a cunt ofc, I just say I play cod.
 
Happens everywhere. Not just games. Anime is coping the same shit in Japan right now... in a very deadly fashion too.

I really hate it how people instantly react differently when they find out im an avid gamer. Before anything, they're all "hey man. Cool. YOu seem like a nice guy." and friendly and once they ask me what i like doing and i reply gaming, they sorta reel back a bit. I really hate it when people think gaming is nerdy and geeky. The way i see it, its a hobby. You can have your sports and obsession over tv series or whatever strikes your fancy, but why do people see the need to bash ONE particular interest someone may have.

Worst thing is.... i cope both. Gaming AND anime/ manga. It sucks

I've had the last line said to me tonnes of times (years ago though)!!
Firstly, just coz you play video games doesn't mean you're a nerd! it just means you enjoy them!
Secondly, what's so wrong about being a nerd?? Much better than being a skank, jock or bimbo!!

The funny thing is... the people who used to call me a nerd for liking videogames now all own Xbox's and play Shooting games :S
 
We have a very little amount of female gamers at school, and the ones that are gamers usually only player shooter games like Black Ops, Halo, etc. Any other genre, and they look down on you for some reason. :ffs: And my grandpa is always bashing on video game players, and he used to be one too - though he wasn't totally big on them. But every time he sees me play a game that he considers "too violent" for me (FF and KH for examples), he always gives a comment and says shit like, "Oh, the way your life goes depends on how you spend it. This crap isn't going to lead you to a good life. . ." and other things related to that. He's complained about it all his life, and he clearly hasn't noticed that I'm doing fine in the vital things in my life so far. :hmph: People like him I consider to be very ignorant and stereotypical; making it sounds like all people that play video games are going to grow up as bums .

Lol! i got the same treatment. cept now they're all playing shitty ass Facebook games and rage because they can't beat the first 5 levels of a game.
 
When I was a kid, my mother used to complain about me playing games all the time because she wanted me to go "play outside". But I had no friends in the neighborhood, and I liked video games, and whenever I tried at school to approach kids who were "playing outside," I felt their RL games to be boring and dumb, and I usually got picked on--I was always "it" while playing hide and seek, or tag, and everyone would laugh at my misfortune in catching everyone. So why on earth would I want to play outside and willingly expose myself to that when I could escape such things by playing Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and all the other great games I played as a kid? :ffs:

At this point I think gaming seems to be acceptable enough that I don't have to "deal with" non-gamers in the same way though. Not only do I not give a shit about what others think anymore, but I think gaming is way better than many other things people do. I may sit on my ass a lot, but at least I'm doing something, rather than watching TV where you're just taking in something and not usually participating (unless it's Jeopardy or something). With games you have to think, use brain to hand reflexes, and before the era of voice acting, you had to read too :O


Also, with reference to some of the discussion above, I think a big part of the reason gaming is seen as "nerdy/geeky" is that many people assume those who spend all their time playing games will be out of shape physically, or perhaps retreated to gaming because they were no good at gym or sports in school. And a lot of chicks seem to go for physically fit guys who play sports, and vice versa with many guys going for fit chicks, so there's the (dumb) idea out there that people who sit around playing games all day can't look good. Or maybe also that they're "socially awkward" and thereby wouldn't be datable.

Well, fuck that. In an epic group hug moment here, I will say that these things are not true; this forum alone has proven that there are plenty of fascinating, good-looking, and otherwise charming people here who are 100% datable and awesome!!!!! :sad2::grouphug: *hugs everyone, even the five "Most Recent User" noobs who just signed up who could potentially be spambots* Cookies for everyone, we are all gamers and thereby we are all awesome, dammit :mokken:

People that say that gamers are losers that will forever live in their parents basement. yeah...

Or those that say that gamers have no social life. I have quite a nice one thank you very much.

Girl gamers are all goths or ugly. I haven't met many "ugly" girl gamers.

Or that video games are very addicting and that those who play will go to neglect their kids and their family and friends. Yes these people exist, but not every gamer does this. And in fact, I think very few do.
 
I usually just brush it off, I don't really care. They like getting shitfaced and screaming at the TV during a football game, I like getting shitfaced and saying "derelick my balls" every time i kill someone on xbox live

as for video games cause violence

well, most of you get off to a guy manhandling barely legal chicks. so maybe you're a potential pedophile and rapist. :monster:

That's the way I see it. The people that go on about what losers gamers are, or claim gamers are all socially awkward or what have you, probably aren't people I'd care to be friends with in the first place, and as such, I couldn't care less what they say; Won't hurt my feelings.
 
For some reason I can't find people who game anymore...Maybe they gamed in the past but they don't anymore either because they find it a child's play or because they got bored.
So I end up playing alone...Which makes me sad.

I don't really get asked about my hobbies so yeah,don't think I have much of a problem.My friends so far seem pretty open minded about gaming but don't take it as seriously as me.That's an entirely different thing of course.

To be honest in fact I usually avoid mentioning that I like to play video games openly,cause in the past I'd get comments from guy gamers...not a very good thing.
But it sucks cause I don't consider myself just a casual gamer or a trend gamer.

I remember my mom blaming(and she still does) the playstation for not being in the mood to do my homework when obviously the problem is another,or she still blames it even if I have not touched it for weeks.LOL.
 
One of my friend sometimes brings up all those "news" and "articles" about how gaming causes people to become murderes, rapist or just an extreamly unpleasant person.

I'm not really annoyed by it but I do correct him.

lol I had this with rts browser games I invested many months in those games..every one would say get a job you are wasting your life etc and now I got a job some of my colleagues freeking play the same type of game.even two of my superiors..its funny..

Also me getting agressive becuz of COD and that im addicted and should get help if it gets worse..fuck that..imma do what I want.Hell yeah..

Just had a 4 hour session with one of me buddies at BO zombie map Ascension :griin:

I couldn't have said it better. Not to mention that other things like rap music, cell phones, and sugar are also blamed for violence as well, with just as much likelihood of causing violence as video games. :mokken:


I for one haven't run into the 'gaming is nerdy' thing though. :wacky: I guess Halo and Call of Duty and Modern Warfare did a lot to change that viewpoint. Nearly everyone plays games, at least within my age group they do.

But my dad is definitely one of those very ignorant people that just don't get how complex and demanding games can be. This isn't pacman, aight? This is Halo. I have to keep track of a lot of things at the same time, just because I'm not jumping up and down and doing backflips doesn't mean I'm not doing something that is very demanding and complicated. He'll just walk in the room and look at the screen for a second then say, "You're mesmerized by that game," or just start randomly bashing it for no reason and for the stupidest things. The Master Chief's visor is orange because it blocks out sunlight, not because he's gay. :ffs: It's so annoying and kills enjoyment of playing so much that I've taken to playing only when no one else is in the house, so I can play without worrying about interruptions.

Perhaps the most disappointing thing about non-gamers is that they cannot appreciate your achievements in the game. D: While playing through Devil May Cry, and taking out 4 Mephistoes and 1 Faust without getting hit once is awesome..... but there's no one to brag to. :cry:
