So in Final Fantasy VIII once you have selected your chosen party of three the will relentlessly follow you around and copy every step that you take.

I was wondering... did it frustrate any of you? Would you have perhaps preferred just the single 'main' character taking the lead like in other Final Fantasy instalments?

I don't know for myself... sometimes it was fun. I would like to run around like a mad woman, run in circles, back, forward, stop, go and all that jazz. Maybe I'm just easy to entertain but when I was bored I would do that haha!

Did anyone else do the weird run/walk dance? Or is it just me? :D

Thoughts on this style in FFVIII plx. All posts will receive... :freehugs:

;)

O.O Um...This is done in many RPGs and although it doesnt have much importance it adds a bit to the feel of travelling with a party. It also helps players connect more to characters other than the hero for a change. I like the caterpillar party thing in some games as I feel it adds more reality than having the whole party somehow squeezed into the main character's body, detatching themselves only when necessary.

Bloody odd lady Summer :lew:

I didnt do a dance, but looking at them run where I had just run was kinda stupid and standing inside of each other was kind weird to. I like how they either removed the trailing party theme or made the trailing in the for of a triangle in later games/RPGS.

FFFVIII had some odd stuff in it:hmmm: Rinoa being one.

...No dance? This is most disappointing!!! *sigh*

The best feature that this offered was whenever you entered Squall's dorm room... Hehehehe... Because it provided a close camera angle if you joggled the joystick in a mad and crazy way you could create this epic monster combo of the three characters...

You have to try it. :|

I honestly didn't notice...at least they kept a reasonable space away from you most of the time, except when you went on an elevator or something, at which point they'd magically blend into you. It was a shame you couldn't lose them like you could in other RPGs that have your party members follow you like you're leading a conga line...

I WAS annoyed that the party leader is the only one that gets sent flying by that giant chocobo if you kick the little one into the air too many times, though...they follow you everywhere, except at that point :martel:

It was okay until they climb the ladders. That was so wrong when the girls are above :wacky:

But of course, it's better than in FFVII where the party members merge into one.

I think XIII did a great job in depicting party member movements. That's one of the few good things in the game (don't get me wrong, I still like XIII).

This is what I was going to say. The ladder climbing always creeped me out (anyone seen the human centipede?)

And FFVII did the freaky merging thing

Other then that, it was kind of fun zig-zagging everywhere and they followed every last step

I agree. Ladders = not a good look. FFVII looked the weirdest, and FFXIII did it the best so far.

I think really its just trying to make it more realistic, if it bothers you or not, well, too bad I guess? The more realistic things get, the more annoying they are.

Too true. Is it just me, or did VIII's 'Realistically proportioned characters' kinda ruin it a bit?

Haha Yes I guess. I think because of the quality of the visuals of the time, disproportionate worked best. Though imagine the enlarged heads in ffxiii now a days.

Yeah, I agree with Oli~. I really never was bothered by it, and it made it felt like a traveling party. After playing Kingdom Hearts a lot, it pretty much doesn't phase you anymore, you know?

Yea, with the PS2, the technology was far enough ahead for the characters to look normal enough. I suppose that's why they went back to out-of-proportion characters for IX

I actually liked having them follow you since it gave more of the sense that they were always with you. Though even it had little effect well actually none besides their comments, like the were judging you if you veered off track or something. It wasn't like Squall magically kept them all in his pocket and only in cut scenes released them did they exist. I liked knowing they were always there and again though no impact but their presence had some effect. At times made me think when I first played it, "Should I really be doing this with them around?"

Knowing they were always there added a bit more of a realistic feel to it that the characters besides the main actually mattered. So all in all yeah I liked it kinda glad FFXIII went the same route even though the characters are horrible.

It never really bugged me. I just saw it as an element to the game that let you see your party when you save and come back to it the next day without going into the menu figuring out whose in your party.

But like other people said, this wasn't a new thing in RPGs, many games have done that in the past.

I actually love that the other members of your party followed you. It gives the adventure a more realistic feel and, as the poster above me mentioned, it provides you with the sense that your allies are truly with you. It abates any loneliness one might otherwise consider by seeing the lone party member travel, lol.

But to echo others' sentiments, the ladder climbing was the only time it got uncomfortable, lol.

I never really ran around aimlessly for the sake of seeing them comply, but that does remind me of the idle trains that I (seldom) participated in MMOs.

I know this is sorta off topic, but I actually know what you mean. You can particularly notice the contorted countenances and polygonal cosmetics on the more concentrated PC version. Yet detail and sharpness given to the character models also makes the background look faded and poor in contrast.

But, like VII's leap into 3D models, such efforts are an important foundation for what they do with the games today, I think.

I actually prefer physically seeing my characters then having them appear and reappear, since i like alot of realism in my games, yes I want to see the characters and have them following me. in towns I dont mind having them seperate in the town and you can find them standing somewhere and talk to them (like in star ocean) I hope just about every rpg game I play sticks with this.

As for your dance glitch thingy I believe I did at one point run in a complete circle and yes it was funny :wacky:

I do this all the time, best mini game in the entire franchise haha

I had a lot of fun playing around with the people following Squall. Fun is actually an overstatement if not a complete untruth, however I did do if I felt bored. I made them walk and then run so you'd see each character start walking at the same point while all the others were running. It was most noticeable after you blow up the Missile Base at the beginning of Disc 2. You normally have some time in which there's nothing to do except run around.

I found it....uneventful?

I noticed it but it neither bothered me nor thrilled me in any particularly noticeable way. As for the ladders, it was a decade ago, and the age where where you couldn't walk between things that were clearly far enough apart for you to :wacky:. What do you expect?
