Prometheus

i think people have a misconception that it's a horror film, but it really isn't. i suppose thirty years ago they could have called it that, but i think if alien was released today then people wouldn't say it was very scary. it's definitely a better film than any of the alien sequels, i think. a lot of the bad reviews seem to be coming from people who want it to be another alien, which it isn't. go into it expecting a sci-fi, because that's what it is.

Can you blame people expecting another Alien or comparing it to Alien when all the marketing, trailers etc have pretty much implied THIS IS A PREQUEL TO ALIEN.

Kelly mentioned some pretty good questions :hmmm:
Haha. Im curious as well.

As for the android, he supposedly feels superior to men and wanted to try out the organism I guess.

Giant Aliens (which look like humans and have same DNA) created men, but decided to kill all humans? WHY?
So that organism/snake are the real ALIENS and the aliens we know of are a mix of Humans and alien.

I need to check out the original aliens cause I forgot the movies..been ages..

So those were eggs in those containers? Also that red haired guy/tattoo guy went rogue after being infected..why?
Weird man....

that's what the aliens in prometheus do; they infect you and sort of zombify you. it's what was happening to holloway, but he realised and asked to be killed by vickers. i imagine the answer to why the engingeers wanted to destroy humanity will be revealed in the inevitable prometheus 2.

also, i noticed earlier at work that at the very end of the credits, there's a weyland industries logo and their motto 'building better worlds since 10.11.12'
i imagine that will be an american date format (i.e. 11th of october this year), and so i'm a little excited to see what that date will bring. it'll probably just be the release date of the dvd/blu-ray, but there could be an exciting announcement

Well I managed to finally see it in IMAX 3D with my friend from work and to me I really enjoyed it. It is better than Alien 3 and 4 but it isn't on the same wavelength as 1 and 2. Because I already knew this wasn't going to be a full horror/thriller movie because the aliens we know are not existent in this movie. This is to explain how they came to be and well we all know there will be a sequel explaining the final part of it. I thought the movie as a whole was enjoyable and worked well, it had a few unanswered questions and a few plot holes but that didn't bug me what so ever. Long live Prometheus 2!

I was so fucking clueless with this movie. :lew:

I had no idea it was a prequel to Alien. All of the trailers and advertising for this film passed me by. As I was watching it I got most of the alien references, the first thing I thought when I saw the room with containers was "this reminds me of those eggs in Aliens". The way the aliens latched onto their faces, the acid blood; I thought they were just references to Alien.

During the film I was thinking "this is an awful lot like Alien. I know Ridley Scott did Blade Runner, but did he do Alien too?" I only realized it was a proper prequel at the end
When the Alien burst out of the engineer.
I thought it was supposed to be some sort of incredible plot twist or something and I was incredibly impressed until I realised that was pretty much advertised as a prequel anyway. :lew:

As for the movie itself, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a really good Sci-fi flick and I guess my cluelessness showed me that it's a good stand alone film in the Alien franchise. :hmmm:

I haven't seen it, yet. :ness:

I've read spoilers. :ness:

Thoughts thus far...

I'm guessing the space jockeys / engineers worship the black alien inside the structure. They're religious and its like a god or deity to them.

The structure with the big human head in it, is like a temple or a church.

The space jockeys / engineers are like farmers. They seed the universe with DNA. Its similar to a farmer planting seeds. When humans and similar forms of life evolve, its like the end cycle of planting a seed to produce a crop.

The engineers / space jockeys seeded the universe with the intent of human life evolving just so they could infect them and produce xenomorphs or whatever it is that was pictured inside the interior of the mountain.

..

2nd idea - xenomorphs are a part of the engineer / space jockey life cycle. They need xenomorphs to reproduce / propagate species. That could explain why their race is dying out. They can't produce more of themselves without xenos.

It'll be interesting to see which direction they take it.

Why am I getting memes that Handsome Squidward looks like the
Engineers??? it's too funny and ruins the experience ; __ ;

I just got back from my second screening with the movie.....I am still adamant that Alien 3 and 4 do not touch this movie on terms of quality and story. Prometheus really is a special movie, it might in some cases not be as good as Alien and Aliens but it raises so many possibilities and questions which I deem a really clever take from Ridley Scott. I am excited to see a sequel I can see this if it goes in the right direction...becoming quite special.

To me Prometheus is Alien of this new possible franchise, It is more focused on explaining and story than action, horror and gore. I hope it gets the credit it deserves and I can understand the haters and people not seeing this movie for anything good. But I can see why this movie is excellent on terms of cinematography in terms of special effects and the plot has more of a plot than any other Alien movies...cause to be honest what is there plot? Prometheus has gone in deep but I think it will certainly reach solid ground with Sci-fi fans and Alien fans sooner rather than later.

Finally saw it. :ohshit:

It seemed like one of those movies that tries to be deep and poignant on religious and human conditional issues, but wound up being somewhat superficial & cliche. The execution and visual effects are superb. The story and plot seemed frail and transparent at times.

Not sure what to think about it... really.

Chris and I watched this last night. It was well made and the art direction was absolutely fantastic - such attention to detail - but there were far too many plot holes! =( Perhaps some are just because I lack knowledge about Alien and the series, but here are some I can think of...
  • Why does the 'engineer' drink the contaminated liquid at the beginning? Is it a sacrifice; does he know he's doing to die by being eaten from the inside? Is he toasting to the ship's successful journey?
  • What happens to the alien ship which takes off at the beginning of the movie?
  • Of the two men who get left behind on the planet, and are then attacked by face-suckers (phallic imagery, btw?!), one returns to the ship as a super-human. I thought the face-suckers merely planted a seed inside men, or else killed them. This man was instead possessed.
  • Why did Shaw go off with the robot at the end? He was responsible to what happened to her lover and attempted to let her pregnancy advance. Why did she choose to trust him after this?

There were some clichés too, such as the 'father' moment. :wacky:

It was perfectly enjoyable, but there were some unanswered questions. :hmmm:

Me and the lass (who has NEVER seen ANY of the Alien films, the fuck!?) caught it on Wednesday. It was well done but I expected more and the story was a little thin. Apparently there will be another film that helps fill the holes this first one has created and ties more into Alien.

I totally buy the large, squid-like, Face-hugger at the end. Makes sense. The first Face-hugger, born from a human (and alien-modified genetics from the guy), injects an embryo into an Engineer to produce the first Xenomorph we all are more familiar with.

Watched some of the Alien series, can't say I know much about it.

I really enjoyed the film though. I had no idea it was going to be sort of related to Alien. A lot of good action and special effects to make you wince and groan at how disgusting it is. It's weird, I sort of enjoy being repulsed at alien embryos being cut out of people and face suckers diving into throats etc etc.

Fassbender stole to show, totally convincing in all the roles I've seen him in. Everyone else was a little bit shit I thought. One of the guys looked like Commander Shephard and there was one scientist who had a fucking awesome ginger mohawk which I liked.

Just don't go watch with your girlfriend. I lost all circulation in my left hand. :ewan:

it occurred to me the other day that there are a lot more than the eight or so crew members on board prometheus. what the hell happened to the rest of them?!

See this is one of many issues I had with this film! It just felt like nothing was explained, I'm not one of those that needs a plot and explanation handing to me on a plate, I like a bit of ambiguity and questioning what has happened, but this film just seemed so unthought out to me.

There were some clichés too, such as the 'father' moment. :wacky:

that made me cringe, it was just such a pointless part in the story, and him being there... was it supposed to be some big reveal? it left me thinking wtf, but not in a good way

i don't really understand why they got guy pearce to play weyland, and aged him with make up. why not just get an older actor to play the part? i think there will be a lot of deleted scenes and extra footage involivng a younger weyland to come

I know, it just seemed so pointless, he reminded me of jonny knoxville when he plays that old dude in jackass, i just couldnt take that character seriously at all

I agree with Bambi that this is a reason why the movie skips a beat is cause it doesn't always explain everything. I just think it would be to much screen time just murdering countless crew members where as if you show two or three being killed it ends up being a message to us that the others all got smashed. It's bad part of the movie these questions but I like to see past them.

but when and where did they die? you can't just write a group of characters out of a script and ask the audience to make up their own mind about how they died
