It's not a very good game at all. No lead character. Very little story, with cynical manipulation to get people to care. Bland stupid characters. Battle system that's exciting at first but then boring. An abilites system taken straight from FFX but made worse.
Have I missed anything?

Visuals that would suggest there's more of an environment to explore yet game mechanics that imprison you in narrow corridor-esque maps.
Pacing reminiscent of a Steven Seagal movie, enemies relentlessly thrown at the player.
Towns and NPCs torn from this FF with wreckless abandon.
Not a sidequest in sight, unless you count more fighting :ffs:

the main character who is essentially cloud with tits.

only one black man in the team.

australians in the team.

Major villains receiving so little screen time they're little more than an afterthought.

Hunts reusing previous enemies from the game (at least FFXII bothered to give 'em a pallete swap).

FMVs spamming the game making it feel like more of a movie and less of a game (and spamming the 360 player with additional discs).

Many copies of the game crashing the console in the first two chapters.

A very empty kind of world with very little interaction with inhabitants.

The lack of any memorable villains whatsoever.

The underwhelming powers of the Eidolons - I hardly ever used them except as a way to heal my team after they're dismissed

The fact that the game at the first half dictates which character you HAVE to control in battle and outside of battle.

Hope being irritating, Vanille's voice being irritating.

As a whole it is just a one-way marathon of battles to get to the next cutscene.

It's a good time. Doesn't feel like a true FF but feel people are overly critical of the game tbh. Ofcourse people's tastes differ, but for me, I really enjoyed it. Hope is the only thing that annoyed me.

Absurd and lazy storytelling.

Idiotic 'shaky cam' cut-scene direction.

Mediocre voice acting at best.

Inducing this image of your controller composed of the X button, L1 button and a stick that only goes forward.

Their depressing attempt at reviving the success of FFVII.

The two digit IQ dialogue and painful melodrama.

All of the above. Of course, this is Square-Enix, you shouldn't expect anything good to come out of them anymore. I didn't mind the voice acting though, RPGs tend to be weak in that area anyway.

Music was shit, I didn't mind it that much, but when you listen to the likes of RDR OST, NieR OST or BBS OST you realise how poorly produced FFXIII's OST was. Story was pretty shit on the whole bar about 3 moments which I enjoyed which didn't even last that long. Gameplay was a big step up from FFXII imo but still boring and one dimensional nonetheless. I can't actually remember the last good Final Fantasy title other than FFIX, and no, FFVII was shit too. Square-Enix need to look at some other companies to see what they're doing, and quickly.

The game essentially being a corridor from start to finish, with a few bigger corridors to make it seem better.

Making Jihl seem badass then killing her in the most ridiculous way possible.

Pulling a Necron and only introducing the last boss at the last minute.

Ending a bit too peppy. Even with what happens to two of the main playable characters, they should have kept Serah and Dajh dead. Woulda been a better ending.

Dysley/Barthandalus a little bit boring and theatrical, both in script and voice acting.

Mainly villain issues for me.

My main issues with it are...

+ Screen tearing if you don't have a high-quality television.
+ The WORST soundtrack of any Final Fantasy game, and one of the worst soundtracks of this generation.
+ A complete lack of a proper villain, thereby making the story feel random and pointless.
+ Unbalanced difficulty. One or two difficult fights in an easy game just makes them aggravating.
+ CAPPED Crystarium for the majority of the game. This is unforgiveable.
+ Paradigms were a step backwards from Gambits. I like full customization; it makes up for poor AI.
+ AI in this game was TOO good - heal ME, if I die, we're all fucked! ME, DAMNIT! I DON'T CARE IF FANG HAS SLIGHTLY LESS HEALTH, SHE'S A SENTINEL, SHE CAN HANDLE IT! I CAN'T! HEAL ME NOW!
+ Hope. Most annoying child in a video-game ever. I have a very high tolerance for annoying children in video games, but he pushed me right over the edge.
+ Ear-splitting voice acting.
+ That stupid rating system. Who gives a damn? Its a lazy excuse not to make things harder - players don't like to challenge themselves, the game is supposed to challenge them through its gameplay. Lazy. Lazy lazy lazy.

My "professional" score for this game was a 7.0, but my personal score is much lower, because it just doesn't push my buttons. All it pushes is X. Repeatedly.
Its one of those games you play through once, then look back on it and think: "Hold on a minute...did I REALLY just spend 60 hours of my life on that? What the hell was I thinking?!"

This fucking annoys me to no end. I'm finaly playing it and Vanilles dumb ass keeps healing the other dumb fuck who's life doesn't depend on whether we win or lose the battle.

Also hated the linearness of it all and the confusing leveling up weapons. I still don't know what I'm doing.

Does this mean people are going to be more accepting of bad reviews? I haven't played the game but most people seem to be mirroring the reviews at the time. Whenever a bad one came out, I remember lots of people casting it aside and only accepting the good ones.

Interesting. It's really being defended on other forums.Usually based upon the high rating it received from various reviewers/magazines, the graphics, and the technical problems the developers allegedly faced.

Some people also are claiming SQUARE is forcing the game developers to change the series, making the games more like a FPS.

Supposedly Matuno claimed something along those lines is why he quit Square.shrugs.

The only thing that was shit is that if you die YES YOU the leader you lose. Like wtf is that? Ya you are dead but why not control the fucking others :ffs: Also what really ticked me off is that Jihl was annihlated when she was supposively so epic :ffs: Other than that. I liked the OST but some songs were not all tihat great. I liked Born anew, Nascent Requiem, Blaze edge and a few others. The lullaby one too was nice. What really made FF XIII fall in my opinion is how you die and how linear the game is. I like the story alot but in my opinion they killed off too many villians. Also what about Rygdea? He had fucking no ROLE :ffs: Also wtf in gran pulse all you do is wander around like a grinding machine. The whole fact you couldnt go back cause of the story irratated me. But Galenth was a great bad guy in my opinion. But all his forms were fucking copys of eachother JUST LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE(monsters, troops etc). Other than all that im ok with everything else. OH WAIT NO GIL AFTER BATTLES? That was FUCKING GAYYYY. I am now done. I raged at a few things I did not like.

You know, I was actually going to come in here and rant and bitch and complain about how shit this game is. But it turns out, you've all done that for me.

Keep up the good work. :elmo:

(Though, I find it fucking hilarious that I was saying everything you guys are saying months before the game was released, and no one believed me, and you all kept defending it. Looks like I was right. :griin:)

I still haven't finished the game, and after reading all this, I'm a little less inclined to now. I think I'm only on Chapter 4, maaaybe 5...cba to check, that area with Lightning and Hope, that fucking Bulbasaur monster kept beating the shit out of me and I haven't picked it up since ((maybe 3 weeks after after dying 12 times in a row.))

To be fair, people complain that the game is too easy as it is, how much easier would it be if you could switch to another party member should the leader die?

You wouldn't lose a fight tbh.

There is a very fine line between challenge and frustration.

In almost every other RPG thus far, you have been able to control your entire party. Only having control of one, and getting a game over when that one dies isn't a challenge, its a serious design flaw.

Upping the difficulty would involve making enemies stronger or your characters weaker, or including some fun, challenging minigames. Not imposing some absolutely stupid and ridiculous restriction on you that no sane mind would come up with for a game. Combined with the AI's mind-numbing stupidity in only following set instructions to heal the character with the lowest amount of health (who is not necessarily the character who needs healing, especially if your playable character is on low health), it only serves to aggravate.

Even with it in place, the game is too easy anyway...

Design flaw? Not really. I didn't say it was a challenge anyway.

I've never had a problem with the AI of other characters during the game either, well, actually the only thing I'm against is having two commandos and one decides not to attack your target and goes off hitting something else. I'd suggest using two MEDs if the healing routine is that big of problem.
