At least 28 people - including 20 young children - have reportedly been killed in one of the worst school shootings in US history.

The death toll at Sandy Hook Elementary School, is believed to include the school principal, teachers, the gunman's mother and young pupils aged between five and 10-years-old.

The gunman - reportedly masked and heavily armed - has been named by US media as 24-year-old Ryan Lanza.

There are reports that he used a .223-calibre rifle.

A police official says a 20-year-old man is in custody and CBS news is reporting that a body has been found at an address linked to the gunman.

The school is in the south west of Connecticut
It is understood the dead person may be his father, and that his mother Nancy Lanza, who was a teacher at the school and was also killed. It is believed that most of the fatalities happened in her classroom.

Lanza's brother is also believed to have been killed in New Jersey.

His girlfriend and another friend have also been reported missing there .

US president Barack Obama wiped away tears as he paid tribute to the victims.

He said: "There is not a parent in America who does not feel the same overwhelming grief as I do."

Mr Obama ordered flags at the White House to be flown at half mast.

Lieutenant Paul Vance told a media conference there had been "several casualties", including children and staff.

"The shooter is deceased inside the building," he added.

Relatives wait for news
Meanwhile, local newspaper the Hartford Courant said an entire classroom was unaccounted for. It reported sources as saying many of the shootings took place in a kindergarten classroom.

It has also been reported that the school headteacher has been killed.

One mother, Brenda Lebinski, told Fox News: "I talked to some parents that I knew and they said there were children being carried out all bloody, they thought they were dead.

"I was in total panic, numb, until I saw my daughter coming with her teacher from the school … I grabbed her and it was the happiest moment of my life."

She added: "Another mum that I knew said she was actually in the school … She said a masked gunman came in and was firing and that the principal is dead.

"This is a young vivacious woman who loved her job. She was the best principal."

Staff at Danbury Hospital said they did not expect to receive any more patients than the three they were treating.

Stephen Delgiadice said his eight-year-old daughter heard two big bangs before teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was unharmed.

"It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America," he said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was monitoring the situation.

"I think it's important on a day like today to view this, as I know the president as a father does, and I as a father and others who are parents certainly do, which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected," he said.

The local mayor, Mark Boughton, posted on his Twitter page: "A horrible, horrible day for the Greater Danbury Community. Prayers for Newtown and the families of the children. #tragic ."

Local media initially reported there were two shooters, while police reportedly said a gunman was in the main office of the school and that a person in one room had "numerous gunshot wounds".

The incident began around half an hour after the school day had started.

A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher was shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital.

But State Police are reportedly saying that the school is no longer an "active shooting scene".

Crying pupils were seen being escorted from the school, which has children aged between five and 11 years old.

just horrible, how could you go and shoot 20 young children :sad2:

This is right next to our state. It could have been anybodys Child. I can't even begin to imagine how those parents must feel.

It truly sucks how many evil people there are in this world. Killing anybody is absolutely disgusting, but so many kindergartners is just unbelievable. This makes me feel so sad and pissed off at the same time.

Rest in peace to the victims.

Like I said earlier in the SB, in an ideal world, there would be both no need for private gun ownership, nor for such a deep ingraining of guns into society.

It's absolutely disgusting. I don't care how messed up anyone is in the head, but how they can bring themselves to shoot - at the youngest - 4-6 year old children is just incomprehensible. You want to see pure evil? This is it.

How could someone be this fucking sick? This is a terrible story and I'm praying for everyone who has been affected by this. 20 children killed. TWENTY! TWENTY! WHO THE FUCK DOES THAT!? I am appalled that this was ever a THOUGHT in someones head. "I'm going to go shoot up a school."

I can't even think straight I'm so mad...

How come in just the past year there have been so many shootings? The Mall shooting in Brookfield, the Sihk Temple in Oak Creek, the mass shooting in Colorodo, and this? And I think there have been more. And there have been at least 10 huge ones in the past 10 years. Why are these people feeling the need to do this? Especially children. Those poor kids...and their families...

Its quite sad nowadays that things like this on the news doesnt even shock you when you hear it. Something so tragic yet theres so much horrible things happening everywhere that nothing comes as a surprise. Cant imagine how the family feels, it must be the worst thing to ever go through. These cowards always take theyre on life aswell. Why not just shoot yourself? Why go and murder children. Wee kids who havent even had a life yet, not grown up. Its tragic.

I was speechless when I heard about this on the news today.

What a travesty...I struggle to understand why people do the things they do and why God allows things like this to happen. All more often these shootings are beginning to get more and more frequent. I really felt for those people who got shot in the mall in Oregon a couple of days ago...but my heart literally rips for these poor babies at this school. God have mercy on the man who felt a good way to end his life was by finishing the lives of 20 something innocent children and 8 something adults.

I'm praying for peace and understanding to come out of this...and that we can learn something from this as a nation and society, whatever it may be.

I'll just reiterate what most other folks said. It disturbs me, and most things do not. I mean an elementary school, really? I mean I knew humanity was on a huge decline, but this.. has no reason. Whatever you want to throw at it, it's not enough. It puts a silence in your soul, religious or not.

What type of bullying could of made this fella go into this? What type of disease could of spread through the kid's head to make him want to go on a rampage in this fashion.

Was this a religious inspired thing? Bottom line is... we will all talk about it, and we won't find a reason. There needs to be blame so.. cops will pin it on something that makes no sense.

I agree this is a bad thing that happened and that the person is an idiot for doing so.

I dont agree with people calling for gun control. The problem is with society in general. Our society has become a group of people who care for nothing but themselves and only do good if they get something for it. Gun control isnt the problem, this petty, self serving, god complex of a society is the problem.

and Americans still wont do anything about their guns. Because owning a gun is more important than the lives of the innocent :ari:

The news just gave some statistics just now, in the UK 15 people were killed by guns this year, in Canada just over 150 and in America 9000....that is absolutely ridiculous....BUT YOU GUYS HAVE THE RIGHT TO OWN A GUN :ari:

and Americans still wont do anything about their guns.

It's certainly too late for any form of tough gun control to be widely accepted. Guns have long been too deeply ingrained into much of American society while in the UK and Australia, we simply don't have the equivalent of a Second Amendment that puts guns and defence so integrally to the foundations of our nations. Opponents of gun control can simply argue in response that the presence of arms would be effective deterrents rather than leaving staff totally defenceless to protect the children and themselves. It's definitely a sad state when we realise that no matter what, guns will continue to be seen as being the solution, not necessarily the problem. As someone who has never grown up with, or lived with, this libertarian guns-are-your-friends culture (thankfully), it baffles me no matter what.

I think what can be consensually agreed on however, is what to do about mental health, though what I particularly find frightening is the ability of someone with a major psychological problem having access to firearms. Guns on their own untouched may not be a problem, but they damn well are when a psycho lays their hands on them, especially one as remorseless as this one. The recent surges in mindless shootings clearly show that poor mental health is just as much of a fundamental issue that must also be tackled, while unfortunately, I still doubt that anything would be done about guns. If nothing substantial came out of Columbine, out of Virginia Tech, the Aurora shootings, this one, as awful as it is, will also silently dissipate soon enough.

What's with this American trend? Why the fuck do people aim at schools instead of the mall or something?

Notice that this shit never happened in the past when Christian morals were still prevalent. Goddamn liberals are destroying this world with all their hippie bullshit.

I heard about this briefly before I went to bed last night. It was quite late in the day when I found out...actually attended our first parent conference for the semester at my daughter's school early in the afternoon. I refused to read and absorb the details yesterday -- I don't watch the news...I simply heard about it, and closed my eyes. This morning after coming home from work at 8 a.m, I finally sat down, read and watched videos online. I kept replaying everything that happened yesterday. I don't understand why that son of a bitch didn't just stay home and shoot himself. I don't even want to see or hear any politics crap. My heart goes out to everyone involved...those who survived, the parents...the teachers...the little ones (6 and 7) that should've been safe in school, but didn't make it for dinner, a playful tuck into bed, and a goodnight kiss from their parents. The horror and grief for the parents who lost their child, who waited and waited to see the faces of their own child amongst the crowd of other parents and children reuniting...your child is not supposed to go before you, and for what happened yesterday, that is very devastating. I would not be able to cope or recover from that, no matter how many years have passed.

get that shit the fuck out of this thread yo. first, there were mall shootings recently. second, read a history book sometime, people have always been this fucked up. it's not the "goddamn liberals"

These aren't "psychos," or "monsters," or "whack jobs" that are committing these crimes for the most part. They're ordinary people who have suffered from some sort of depression that has been left untreated for too long because we have a social stigma against being perceived as mentally ill. But honestly, that issue, while it is certainly something that needs to be addressed, is secondary to the fact that we simply have too many guns and can access guns too easily in this country. Because the mental health issues only come into play in these types of mass shootings which, while certainly tragic for their scale, are a statistically insignificant proportion of the overall gun violence in this country. The "rank and file" shootings are based around inner city violence, escalated fights/arguments, and similar, essentially one-on-one situations. Those are not acts committed by mentally unstable people. They are committed by people who turn to the gun to finalize their arguments.

One of the weapons this guy (his primary weapon, at that) used was a knock-off of an AR-15 assault rifle. The kicker is that it was legally purchased by his mother. Tell me what rational reason a person who lives in an affluent suburb in Connecticut would have for owning a frigging assault weapon? No one needs a weapon that can fire multiple rounds per second. It's asinine.

We have a serious problem with guns and gun culture in this country. Until we decide to stop acting like a bunch of cowards brainwashed by the NRA, these things will continue to happen.

Maybe I'm naive, Stella Nox Fleuret, but this one feels different. I think we may see, if not some sort of gun law reform, then at least that process being put in motion.

I'm sorry you don't see that school shootings go hand in hand with ultra-liberalism. Didn't happen before, I wonder why?

ahahahaha that is very funny. you are a funny guy. you choose to blame others but you can't even explain why the evil ultra liberals are to blame! this makes me laugh and you are funny.

this is a horrible tragedy and while I feel that there are things that need to be done to combat future events, this is not the time or place to be discussing them.

Because liberals don't take responsibility or accountability. They want to do whatever they want to do, regardless of consequence.

This is where you and others do your little liberal dance- see the potency of your post and the post I responded to earlier. They aren't even arguments, they are just ignorant, crowd pleasing junctures.

It' sno coincidence that all the young people, such as yourself, labor under the liberal agenda. That is why I don't really expect much support on this site, because the lot of you are young and all about your own little worlds.

“Now is not the time to talk about gun control.”Yeah, now is not the time to talk about gun control.
The time to talk about gun control was after Columbine. And then again after Virginia Tech. And then again after Fort Hood. And then again after the Giffords shooting. And then again after Aurora.
When 18 elementary school students have been shot and killed, it’s too late."

And your post was downright rude and vulgar. I am not liberal, please do not lump me in to your absurd generalizations. This is a topic about a massacre at a school, not a political debate.
