Cheers. I've stolen quite a few of them. :mokken:

Who came up with the theme of 'Japan'? All I can think when I see that theme is that one picture 'God that place is creepy.' :wacky: I mean geez, sometimes a person can run into inspiration trouble with the theme, but dang....

Whoever posts the guidelines comes up with the theme.

There's a lot of things you can do in relation to Japan.

Culture, music, there's a wide spectrum you can tap into for this theme.

I think I'll be starting to join again starting next week. Was originally gonna be this week but eh, Japan didn't spark some interest.

However, being in the slump I'm in, getting involved might help. =]

So most likely next week.

Definately. Despite the obvious choice of anime the theme is an entire country. Anyone who cant think up something for that should get their brain checked.

Well, Japan isn't the only country out there with culture, music and has a wide spectrum of things. And being on a forum dedicated to a Japanese game series, I think we've gotten quite an overflow from that sector. Everyone knows pretty much all about Japanese popular culture, which is summed up in ninjas, katanas, seafood and magical girls in school uniforms. And like I said before, we've got whole boards dedicated to that stuff.

:\

If we're to go on a country theme, I think Ireland or Greenland or Russia would've been good. Those countries don't get nearly as much publicity/popularity as Japanese culture does, these days. Heck, even the wild west of America would've been cool (though, now that I think about it, the whole world -- Japan included -- has tried to create a native version of the cowboy.)

But, yeah, I'llshutupnow.

I think I'll be joining in next week too. I've simply no inspiration for something uniquely mine in this theme seeing as how it's been pretty well done to death by the internet and everything already.

If you think it's been "done to death" then it creates a challenge for you to think of something new. Be creative etc.

But, there's a lot more than "ninjas, katanas, seafood and magical girls in school uniforms" to be fair. The yakuza, discipline, bushido, calligraphy, geisha... I could go on really. But I won't because I want to keep my idea to myself. :mokken:

:lew: I lol'd at the cowboy thing.

In general I'm just not really a big country theme person. That's the only reason I'm not entering. xD

I do understand what you mean. Japan is a very wide variety of things, along with other countries, but maybe it seems to stop by, like you said, 'cause of the video games and everything, a lot already in our minds. xD

No worries though, I'm starting next week too. Looking forward to it.

Wen I saw that theme I instantly thought of anime. But don't worry, that's not wat I'm doing

Il do anime and know one will think its by me |)
Infact im gunna do anime, i rarely...well never use anime ever and i moan all the fucking time about anime stocks i be aswell just make myself a hypocrite :mokken:

Okay, well samurai naturally fall into the category with ninja, and with that goes discipline, katanas, bushido calligraphy, tea ceremonies and a whole slew of other things. And, er, courtesans isn't precisely the topic for a sig that's to represent a whole country, yo? So, er, yeah, rain check on that one. Though I suppose one could always do a sig based on the eerie human-like robots the Japanese like to make. <_< But they're like, you know... creepy.

The cowboy thing is totally true, and Japan is especially guilty of it! They also have some odd fancy of putting their 'cowboys' in long red coats/cloaks. I can name 3: Vincent Valentine of FF7; Dante from Devil May Cry; and some other dude from some anime that I don't know because I don't watch anime at all. All of them use guns, have a distinct attitude, and wear a clothing item that is long and red.

Don't ask me why, that's just the way it is! *flings hands into air*

There are more out there, I know it! Cowboys have that same 'unique' appeal to them the same way samurai do, therefore bad western movies were made by the hundreds back in the day. And god help us all, but we're still being plagued by them today. :(

Anywho, glad ya got what I mean! Looking forward to new topic as well.

There have been a couple of geisha sigs on the site so there isn't a problem there.

Also, uh what? Ninjas = tea ceremony and calligraphy?

Like Lewis said, it's an entire country and you don't do it justice by summing it up with a 4 things. I doubt any country can be summed up by 4 things. Your post seemed very short sighted IMO. But if that's your opinion then fair enough.

:wacky: Cowboy.. Vincent...? What? :lew:

Eh, the way I go about themes, is it either interests me a great lot, or I couldn't care less about the theme. Whether it be used to much, is too obvious, or predictable, or simply because it doesn't strike my interest trigger, it's an opinion, so I kinda learned not to argue it.

Either you care for the theme, or you don't give a shit. Some people might think of it as a wide variety of different things, others might think its erm... ninjas at tea ceremonies. :-)wacky: It made me giggle) Tis an opinion, there's no right or wrong there really.

As for me... Why am I still here. :hmph: I need to be in bed, even though it's noon. I haven't slept. :rage:

Looks like SOTW is getting a bit more public attention lately though, or is it just me?

hohohohoh im a retard

I never saved :wacky:

When will the polls go up? If its not til 2moro il probadly make soemthing later tonight :hmmm:

Okay, sure, but still.... I have a problem making a sig for a country about a very expensive whore. :wacky: I'm totally cRaZY like that. It isn't the artistry at question, it's the subject matter I find quirky.

Also, samurai and whatnot were expected to be very polite amIright? This includes the traditional tea ceremony stuff that I really don't know a whole lot about because apparently, back in the ol' feudal times, it varied from place to place and depended on what the occasion was for. Besides, these days, where you find samurai, you'll find ninjas. The two are like smoke and fire. You'll find all kinds of people who adhere to the different sword schools of the two, and a fair number of people who've learned both.

And I'm not saying that a country can be summed in in JUST 4 things, but the fact is, when people think of a place, the most well-known thing/things of that place immediately jumps to mind. How many people on here have said "First thing I thought was anime"? There ya go. There are instantaneous associations everyone has with certain people, places and things. With Japan, it just happens to be a handful of very identifiable things. Which is more than what most countries have. It isn't short-sighted, it's just calling on the facts, these are the major things that immediately jump to mind most often when thinking of this [place/person/thing].

You know that ninjas go to tea ceremonies. The question is, how does the ceremony end...? :ninja: DUN Dun dun!

I think to get better though you have to work with themes / images and resources you dont like. I could put it like this.

Its easy to say you dont like a particular theme because you may think its overused or predictable. But by saying that its almost confirming that you like to stick to your comfort zone. And by constantly sticking to that your basically making the same tag over and over again but with different stock focals.
Experimenting with new techniques is equally as important as thinking about things with your head and deciding on how you can approach something with some originality.
While a theme sometimes comes out as dull and obvious it can be really surprising as to what people can come up with.

Sorry for the delay, but the polls are up now. I was gonna put them up yesterday, but my internet was spazzing out all day, so I just watched Harry Potter movies instead xD
