So I've come across this article the other day and scoffed it off, but I had the feeling others might be interested in it:

"Sony's next PlayStation Portable device is real and powerful, one developer claims.

Speaking to
Industry Gamers, Netherrealm Studios Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick reportedly said on record the team has "PSP2" when asked about the team porting its upcoming Mortal Kombat title to the current PSP.

"We're not launching day one on all consoles like that," Himmerick said. "We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we're looking at the engine, like what can it support.

"Always a big thing for us is the performance," he added. "We're running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We're definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it's a pretty powerful machine. We don't have a 3DS system in house yet, but we're looking to get one, and we'll certainly look at what its power is."

Sony has declined to comment on the report. The latest
rumors say PSP2 may have touch-sensitive controls on the back of the device and could include phone functionality."

Have at it :monster:

I have heard rumours about this, the only thing i'm worried about is potentially locking out older users such as myself. I really don't want to buy a whole new console for one game or a series of games just because I can't tap it and it'll work.

Speaking of which, touch sensitivity may be a bit... I don't know, it sounds a bit too iPhone for me, I seriously hope they don't just do an iPhone with a PSP cover.

I know it's just speculation more than anything, but one the topic of what if...

I was flabbergasted the other day when I saw a thread where people were looking forward to some kind of hybrid iPhone/PSP thing o_O

No, no, no...I wanna keep my phones and games separate thank you very much. I'm not even a i-Fan of any sort, so it's even more useless for me. I mean, I'll spare a lol if this is some weird coup to take out Microsoft, but gaming will start to lose it's identity as gaming and just end up being some app to download ;A;

EDIT: The thing I really want in a new portable installment is another analog stick, maybe bigger screen and sound quality, scratch resistance screen a big plus, and what the hey, better graphics. Oh, and being able to play the "old" PSP1 games :wacky:

Though really, it shouldn't be an issue - unless it's a digital only flop like PSP Go!, what can possible come after UMD discs?

well i purchased a psp 3000 and there is a phone option via skype, there is a mic down right ,at side of the analog stick! But i am excited ,thanks fer the news ,i hope it can run ps2 games!

There are only two things I want from PSP2, and they are as follows:

1) A useable analog nub
2) Backwards compatibility

Otherwise, I could honestly care less about the new features. Improved graphics are all well and good, but if I can't actually play the games due to a crappy analog nub, it makes them pretty useless, doesn't it?

Things like phone compatibility don't really interest me - its a GAMES console, I'm not buying it for crappy features I probably won't use - and touch-screen controls...well, those are very much Nintendo's thing really, aren't they? I suppose when they say they're going to get their hands on a 3DS they're actually going to take it apart and see how far they'd be able to get away with ripping off its design specs in the vague hope that they'll actually make a noticeable dent in the handheld market.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Didn't they JUST release the PSPGO? Or are they now trying to just erase it out of existance because it was a huge fail, like Nintendo's GB Micro.

The biggest gripe I have with Sony/Nintendo is when they just up and release portable after portable after portable.. barely with any time inbetween for prices to drop before the next is released. :mokken: Wankers.

but... i already have a PSP 3000, wouldn't that make a PSP 2 far more inferior :gasp:

oh well, what can I say; Sony sucks at marketing. It's why the PS3 is as much of a flop as it is. :wacky:

Soon the they will name the PSP 9000 and have a Vegeta advertise in it. I can imagine it as I write.

User: Vegeta, why the PSP 9000 is better than my previous PSP
Vegeta: It's...it can go over 9000!!!!! :gasp: *blasts user with Ki-wave*

Damn. Pretty disappointing to read about, yet exciting at the same time. While we might be bringing in some new gadget that could potentially be the next craze of the year, or years, I realize users of the old models might not be benefiting much from it. Then again, I've owned a PSP Slim for a while now... Fair enough?

Urgh. The idea of purchasing a new one when the old one is still working irks me. :\

Sony, please say you've learnt from your mistakes and actually put some thought on the new PSP so it doesn't fail as epicly as the PSPGo (in fact, the PSPGo performed that badly, I'm wondering why no one's started giving them away for free yet). If the PSP 2 fails to stand out in any way, that would be the end of Sony's handheld market campaign. Both Nintendo and Apple have upped their games with their respective devices and Sony will need to be able to capture the interests of the west again (not Japan. PSPs are doing swimmingly well there the last time I checked).

If there is backwards compatibility (and I do mean backwards compatibility with the function of playing UMD discs), then good. That will be a start. It would save me having to purchase a new PSP to replace the one that died a while ago. I also want a second analogue stick, as well as analogue sticks that are of sufficient quality. The 3DS's analogue stick from what I heard received positive feedback, and surely Sony should be able to beat Nintendo in that department. And I don't care how many features the PSP 2 would have. As long as it manages to perform these functions well and it doesn't kill a wallet. A reason why the PSPGo is unloved is because it's barely even cheaper than the PS3 itself.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Didn't they JUST release the PSPGO?

Yeah, it's not even a year, but I think it's kind of understood the Go! was a failure, so really the last accounted handheld would be the 3000 :hmmm:

Actually, I just bought a 3000 after having my phat old 1000 for 2 years, so I wouldn't mind if they pushed back the eventual PSP2 a year or so :awesome:

I didn't buy anything after a DS Lite, and that's been working out well with the 3DS on the horizon :ryan:

As far as I know the PSP Go is complete failure. If sony manages to actually make this "new" psp worth people'd time then fine that will be a start. Though I have a feeling it can fail very easy ike the psp go. So you never know what will happen with this psp. Backwards compatibility would be nice. I would also love to see what it has in store that the original psp does not have.

Sony's successor to the PSP will boast a larger, HD screen – and it's been shown off behind closed doors according to a recent report.

The new console was shown at the Tokyo Games Show according to a recent Kotaku report, which backed up earlier rumours that the PSP2 would be sporting a touch pad on the back of the device.

The report suggests that the new console's screen is an inch larger than that of the existing PSP model, and that its boost in resolution has lead to Sony touting it as 'HD'. The same report also reveals that the touch pad is similar in look and feel to a "big mouse trackpad".

Further details on the PSP2 come in the wake of this morning's news that Sony is cutting the price of the PSPgo – although that doesn't mean the new console is any nearer as it's reportedly on course for release at the end of 2011.

Still no word on a second analogue stick.

A touchpad? I hope to god it doesn't end up being a necessity to play certain games, that's what turns me off a lot of DS games :hmph:

I've seen the Go! retailing for as low as 125.00 CAD a few times :wacky:

I have mixed feelings about a touch pad. I wouldn't care if there is one, I just can't see a real purpose to it either. If they include a stylus, are we to expect some pseudo palm-pilot feature to the PSP? 'Cause I rather not play PSP games with a stylus, you know?

I have an LG Neon cellphone that sports a screen touch dialing function - however that's the only thing the screen touch is for. The fact that the ability to do more than dial numbers wouldn't have been as hard to incorporate into the phone has pissed off a lot of people, so I can just seeing Sony getting similar flack if they have a gimmicky touch pad that people expect to do more than one function.

Ah well, guess we'll see. More than anything, I just want a second analog controller and a bigger screen, better sounds, and longer battery life. So far it appears to be 1 out of 4.

A touchpad - interesting. I kind of expected Sony to declare war on the Nintendo DS and 3DS by implementing some kind of touchscreen or something, but a touchpad is a tad different, even though it's clearly just a gimmick. I kind of wonder what its purpose is and how that's going to be implemented if developers are going to widely use it for their games. Oh well, as long as it isn't like the PSPGo (downloadable games only) and if it finally has a second analogue stick, then I won't raise too many issues then.

As for the price cut of the PSPGo, well - I'm not surprised. It hasn't exactly been a highly acclaimed bestseller and many people see little point in it anyway with a significant percentage of the PSP's library unavailable for download. It was a business blunder from Sony in my opinion, and lowering its price to $200 still doesn't sound anymore appealing for a customer.

Touchpad? -vom-

I don't like the DS because of the touch screen. I hope this touchpad is not madatory for some of the games. It would be helpful for sites like Facebook, but I don't want to have to play a game with it.

That being said, it sounds like the PSP2 will basically be a PSP upgrade in all categories and I am eager to see any pictures that might surface. Can't wait to see it in action, as I am interested in what it can do. :mokken:

there going to make a psp2 why would they make one???? i have a plain psp
i really dont care about that im pretty sure they wont make one what color is it

they have to do so much stuff already they have to make ff14 and so many more than that they wont even make one yet maybe in 2012 cause they haved to make dissida II or deldicim whatever you call it i would not bealive that there going to make a psp2 theres tons of psps in the world maybe not but thats my opinion im out

Wait, what? This is Sony we're on about here, not Square Enix. God help us if SE decide to make a handheld console. xD

And a PSP2 was always going to be inevitable. The PSP has been around since 2005 and like all formats it reaches a stage where it will become obselete and be replaced by a successor.

Well now I guess it is safe to say all products will use a touch pad at some point. Now this is just like the Ds... It sounds nice but I want to see more of Psp II. Also The Psp go was never fascinating from the start. The price drop still wont do anything much for it.

Also@ Ironwill. Psp has nothing to do with the making of FF XIV and such. Tons of Psp's? There are tons of everything really..
