Has anyone else heard of 8.9 earthquake that struck Japan and the tsunami?

I just found out about five minutes ago. Does anyone know what happened or what's happening?

They seem fine, I think (?) but they keep on getting 6.0 and 7.0 aftershocks which is pretty heavy. Some places near Japan are on Tsunami warnings. Haven't heard of any deaths.

"
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in the U.S. state of Hawaii said a tsunami warning was also in effect for Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. It said a tsunami watch was issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii. "

"Friday's massive quake was felt in Tokyo, where it shook buildings and caused several fires. The Tokyo metro system says all train and subway traffic in the city has been stopped. "

"Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan has convened an emergency meeting of the Cabinet to assess the situation. "

I've already heard about it reaching Alaska, but I don't really know if its true. And I've heard there's been about 19 deaths, maybe more

Apparently there's new tsunami warnings for California as well, and Hawaii has moved from warnings to full blown evacuations. Loads of coastal areas are being warned to move to higher ground.

I got a television warning around where I live, saying that a occurrence was "imminent."

Anyone know if there have been any other sites besides Japan right now affected by this?

I just saw on MSN that Japan has a "nuclear emergency" as a result of one of the power plants having complications because of the earthquake/tsunami. Let's hope there isn't another Chernobyl incident, that would be more unfortunate for Japan and the immediate area around that plant. Not to mention that radiation creating a worldwide nuclear warning as a result of the radiation being swirled around by the jetstream.

Officially Hawaii is being hit right now with the waves, and California/Mexico coast seems to be under a warning too..how big is this Tsunami?

And there have been 60 confirmed dead in Japan cause of the Tsunami/Earthquake so far.

Earthquake hits Japan

As you probably know the news has been filled today with info about the earthquake in Japan.

Some companies have halted production in their plants:

While some are speculating this could be the most expensive natural disaster in history:

Of course being a gamer I won't dwell on the human toll but only as how this will affect gaming. It will be interesting to learn how damaged the gaming industry is in Japan from this and whether there will be delays in game and console production.

If others wish to discuss this as a humanitarian crisis that's fine by me.

There has been a lot of devastating earthquakes if you think about it. Please don't take offense, but Japan shouldn't take precedence over the others just because they have game developers there. New Zealand and Haiti (a year ago) are a couple of others. These people all need help, and I can't imagine a earthquake here...or how we'd handle it :sad2:

People have got to be hesitant though to donate to charities for this disaster though...esp. after what happened with Haiti and their lack of getting all of the money that was donated. Hopefully they get the help that they need...and quickly enough.

...Still. My thoughts are with these people. I hope they can manage to band together and help each other. Its times like these that press us to our limits emotionally/psychologically/physically...and while people die and it lives in our hearts forever...you usually don't see how much we care about each other and how we can pull together as much as we can until we have a time of crisis.

nothing like merging those threads...
rotfl...

Of course I couldn't find where someone else had started one.

shrugs.

Anyway, we'll see what affect this has on Japan as a country. As well as on the gaming industry there.

This was so scary when I first heard of it. All those poor people. That's already big damage from the quake but the tsunami is just horrid.

My prayers go out to all those involved.

It measured 8.9 on the Richter scale I believe, so even in Japan's standards as a country in a very geologically active zone, it was a shockingly powerful earthquake, perhaps one of the most powerful ever recorded. It is very fortunate that due to the strict nature of construction laws and regulations the buildings are very resilient, so it could have been a lot worse. An earthquake of that magnitude is bad enough, but the inclusion of a tsunami is just devastating particularly when you've seen the footage recorded. I don't know the figures off my head, but the death toll has climbed as well as people reported missing. It's yet another tragic testament to the strength of nature and my thoughts are with the people of Japan. When you look at the sheer damage and death toll involved, the gaming industry in Japan is very trivial in comparison and one of the last things I would be too worried about.

I saw some photos online this morning, and it looks like the place where it hit got trashed the living shit out of. Buried cars, neighborhoods flooded, buildings bursting into flames...it's just awful. I can't imagine what it would be like to live there; even if you, your loved ones, and your house/property were okay, just to try to go about your normal business until everything got put back to normal would be a nightmare. I hope they're able to recover the best they can from this, it will be hard for those who have lost loved ones or had severe property damage, but my thoughts are with everyone there.

They reckon more than 1000 people have died so far.

So far, 200-300 bodies have been found. Another 531 people are missing.

Australia and New Zealand are fine thank god. The warnings for us were dismissed shortly after. Queensland alone has already been 99% disaster declared after Cyclone Yasi and the major flooding. :rage: Anything else and we'll be swept away. >.<

They just said that New Zealand may get some high waves and to stay out of the water etc.

Japan's worst previous quake was in 1923 in Canto, an 8.3-magnitude tremor that killed 143,000 people.
And this is an 8.9 magnitude earthquake. =/

It had been Upgraded to a 9.0 plus there has been alot of aftershocks. The Tusnami. and The Power plant threat.

I feel vfery soory for Anyone in Japan. and other countries suffering from this. Hopefully Japan can recover from this. Deepest condoloences t those who Died/Lost family members.
