A Hong Kong gaming magazine has reviewed Final Fantasy XIII, and they've given it a 4/10. Ouch.

A Final Fantasy game scoring 1 out of 10 for the story. Ouch :wacky: Too bad there isn't a a translation of the actual review though. I'd be very interested in what they had to say about it.

Wow.

The only translation I can give at the moment is that it says that SE 'wasted' 9000 Japanese Dollars and they said that the game was a 'joke'.

I think what they were talking about were: Graphics being great, but you need 20-30 hours of gameplay just to get onto the real story, something about easy Game Overs and comparing it to other FFs.

I personally am shocked. Other boards/forums I've been on really liked the game. I even saw some people went on and actually beat the game.

I'm not even gonna bother wasting my time talking about the review.

Summary. China hates Japan and everything to do with it, and vice versa.

Exactly. They will insult anything Japan has to offer in a heartbeat. They can degrade the game all they want, it will still sell a great amount once it gets released in more territories so I am not amused or fazed by their downright ridiculous rating -_-

At least easy game overs don't mean its a walk in the park :mokken:

True, some difficulty will be much appreciated lol. BTW IGN.com gave FF7 the 15th spot on their top 25 Playstion games. I just don't think FF reviews well.

That's better than nothing. Thanks for sharing!

Eh, that's a very harsh rating but hey, it's their review. A 2 for Storyline does seem a little ridiculous in my opinion - that's like not having a story at all, which judging by the trailers, there obviously is. Just my whole take on the matter. If I didn't like a game's storyline the least I would give it is probably a 4 or 5.

Too bad Bei wasn't here. She could most likely translate the article for us since she's from Hong Kong. Or at least I THINK she can speak it...:hmmm: I could be wrong though. Ah well, that is pretty harsh, but oh well. I suppose we'll see once it comes here. Has it been released there yet? o_O If not, then how are they giving the game such a low rating?

This looks pretty absurd. I haven't played the game but I can't see it being that bad. You don't really get games that bad these days (just taking from my personal experience).

TBH, I think the only reason they gave the graphics such a high score was because if they weren't rated high, people would even more quickly spot that this is a rubbish review. We've seen the graphics and we know they're amazing already. :ahmed:

I've always wondered to what extent China dislikes Japan. Luckily I'm heading over to Hong Kong later this year to meet up with relatives who live and work there. I want to actually find out first hand how Hong Kong views Japanese games. But I'm not Chinese, so don't expect me to be good in Cantonese :wacky:

But to be fair, Hong Kong isn't representative of China itself because Hong Kongers tend to think differently from the Chinese mainland.

But if this is how it is, it is simply pathetic. Reviews exist to rate the game how it is and to be impartial. If it is a political prejudice, I have to regard this review as being one of the lowest of the low. They gave 2/10 for the storyline. Seeing as though the game will most likely still be Japanese in the Hong Kong shelves, that isn't a fair score at all unless the reviewer knows Japanese well.

But ouch- this is the MOST negative review of the game- and perhaps out of any of the Final Fantasy games I have EVER seen. Of course I am going to ignore it because I want to play it myself and the reviewer may be horribly lacking in expertise or credibility. I rest my case :mokken:

EDIT: So they marked down the gameplay probably because you die easily? I really do question their ability as game reviewers now.

The low rating for the story really makes me think their review is bogus. I mean they are entitled to their own opinion, but a 2 rating for a FINAL FANTASY storyline?! I know i'm not the only one who knows just how intense and detailed Final Fantasy storylines are, and Square Enix wouldn't mess up a franchise that's been around for over 20 years with a bad story.

That bit. I don't know what the review says but it seems very likely to be opinionated, I mean they have 1 for the gameplay, it's sorta like, eh what? :wacky: I know everyone has their opinion but even all the other reviews we've seen have commented on the battle system overall.

I suppose we're getting to the right sort of time where we can look forward proper, major Western reviews. Role on 1UP's review, at least they won't sit there for an hour commenting on how many towns FFXIII doesn't have. :ffs:

I know, I found that utterly weird as well. We've seen Japanese and non-native Japanese reviewers comment on how good the battle system is and how it makes up for certain other negative elements. Then to have this review come in and suddenly give such a seemingly contrasting view is odd.

I've been spoiled on the story (I imagine you and Ariana have as well, Ryan :wacky:) so I can comment on it compared to the other FF games. It really doesn't deserve a 2/10 at all. Nothing, I mean nothing, can be worse than FF Tactics A2's story.

FUCK THIS REVIEW TBH. This is another one of these fucking ay shit ass reviews. Pardon me...... but they are dissing on a game I have been waitin a FUCKING LONG TIMJE FOR. This will never stop me from buying it and also this probably one of those china vs japan review shit like people said. :ness:

The last review, the 7.9, was at least fair. He did give credit where he thought it was due. This review, however, is simply trash. A 2 for storyline? A 1 for gameplay? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'd assume a 2 for a storyline would mean there is absolutely minimal story, maybe like a Super Mario game or a Street Fighter game or something. The attempt at a story is at least worth a 5, in my opinion, and the story doesn't look like it blows. A 1 for gameplay? Are you serious? That would mean the game is virtually unplayable. No one could like the game, or even get through it. This is a ridiculous review, bordering on insulting. How could anyone take this seriously?

I doubt seeing videos of the game on Youtube and reading the plotline on Wikipedia is an adequate substitute for playing the game itself (which for obvious reasons I can't do), but from what I have seen the storyline is pretty mediocre at best. I think they must have hired an English localization team from Russia, coming up with childish names like "Sazh Katzroy" instead of something we can actually pronounce. If they manage to fix this before the NA release of the game (unlikely), I'll be much more receptive of whatever storyline they include.
