So I'm doing a paper for my Sociology class and we have to write about my parents and their parents history, which kinda excited me because I've always wanted to know more about my mom's side especially. And since my contact with her alone is already limited, much less her own family, I had no way of seeking history information (since I always forget to ask when I do talk to her once a month) until now.

I found out a lot of interesting information about my grandparents. I knew one or two info about them in the past and that's pretty much it, but my mom offered some additional ones tonight during our convo session in Yahoo that really made me go, "Wow, I wish I knew about this sooner."

-----------------

So basically, what do you guys know about the history of your parents and grandparents (and their parents if you have any info about them). You may include any geographic movements, occupations, education, religious participation, major health issues, and anything else you want to include. Discuss your feelings about your history.

I'll state mine later since I still have to do my dad's side. Once I compile everything for my paper, I'll post it here then.

Brilliant thread.

I don't know as much about my family history as I would like to. I'm always willing to learn more about it, but there is only so far you can go in conversation without quizzing your parents / grandparents.

Most of what I know has been acquired through them telling me without me asking.

On my Dad's side:
My Grandad was peacekeeping in Berlin after the war ended. For a while he was guarding Rudolph Hess to prevent him from escaping / anybody breaking him out.
He apparantly had a really crazy time over there... He crashed a jeep and had to pretend he was driving slow and it wasn't his fault to avoid any penalties. In reality he was just driving the thing too fast and lost control. I've seen the papers regarding this accident.

He took part in a sort of fake mini-olympics event they held (it wasn't the olympics, but I think they called it that or something), and he has a medal for it. I've tried to look up what that was, but I have no idea.

I learned all this when he passed on some of his badges and said games medal to me.

He was also a Freemason, like his father before him. He tried to get my dad to become one, but my dad didn't want to. Obviously, due to the secretive nature of Freemasonry, I don't know much about what he did.

Before that, my Great-Grandad (who I never met) was a veteran of The Great War. He was shot in the stomach during a battle... I think it was the Somme, but I am not sure. Anyway he had complications from that day onwards and they eventually got the better of him and he died.

I don't know much about before then. They were living in Consett near Durham (where pretty much all my family live still). I think either my great grandad, or the generation before him, was the one that moved down from Scotland. The Hume family is pretty much a Scottish one. My grandad likes to fantasise over "the Hume Clan", but he hasn't told me much about the family history in Scotland and I don't know if he knows it himself.

I think it is probably unlikely that I will dig any further back. I just have no leads to follow as to where abouts in Scotland they came from.

As for my Grandma, my Dad's mother, I have no idea. I think she may also have some Scottish origins in her, but I don't know enough about her past.

My Mom's side:
Sadly, despite my Mom's parents being like second parents to me, I know next to nothing about their past.

I know that my Granda was born in England, Consett again. His parents though were from Ireland and moved to England to escape a potato famine. One of my Granda's older siblings was born in Ireland, but the rest were born in England.

During WW2 he didn't go to fight (something about his vision not being good enough for battle), but he helped the RAF by fixing the damaged airplanes and such. I'd like to learn more about this.

I know nothing more about his family past... And again (like it was with the Humes) I have no idea where to chase in Ireland to find out where this side of my family come from.

It does seem that I hit a dead end when it comes to leaving Consett. Then again, I haven't really tried to chase anything down.

As for my Grandma on my mom's side... I know very little indeed. I think she was native around Consett, but I don't know much more than that. I'm actually ashamed that I don't, as the death of my mom's parents was a catastrophe in my life and shook the whole world. Everything I felt comfortable about and thought I knew crumbled apart at that time.

I'll have to dig into it one day.

Without digging further, that is all I know at the time being. I don't know very far back at all, but I know some stuff.

My mother's done a lot of Genealogy so I know a lot about where my Family comes from.

On my mother's side, her father is from Aberdeen and moved to New Zealand when he was in his twenties. I know that he was incredibly poor growing up he had six brothers and sisters, two of whom died as children, having such large families and having at least one child dying was fairly common. He did his national service in the Egypt, a lot of which he spent as a kind of clerk because he was too small to do regular army type stuff.
He moved to New Zealand some time in the fifties, married my mother's mother and worked as a carpenter/designer until he retired, a fairly uneventful life.

My mum's mother is Maori, she's also not culturally maori though, which won't mean anything to any of you, but it basically means she had a normal upbringing, as opposed to being raised on a marae. Not a lot happened to her either. she is fairly religious and spent a lot of time doing charitable work.

On my dad's side.
My dad was born in Salford, and so was his dad and his dad was born in Stockport, there's about 200 years worth of 'Manchester-ness' in his family.
They were all more or less the same too, my great grandfather was a welder and an amateur boxer, and so was his son, my dad's a welder but never was a boxer. My great uncle was in the navy and his ship got sunk but he lived, and one of my great aunts was a bridesmaid with the moors murderer Myra Hindley, she's got photos of them together which I never seen, but I only met her once and I was four at the time, so probablyjust as well she didn't show me.

My father's mum was born in Glasgow and was dirt poor too. I think she had family in Islay because she used to go there a lot for holidays when she was young. She also had a large family but she seems to have been the nicest of them that I've met anyway. One of her sisters moved to New Zealand and used to come spend christmas day with us. She wasn't particularly nice or interesting, and I was very glad when she had a stroke and thankfully has stopped coming over to ruin xmas. However after we were saved from her, another of her sisters decided to ruin the next xmas by coming over from Australia, she was a bloody sour cow and only didn't pay for anything for her entire two week stay, she only made one salad, which was terrible and was made up almost entirely from carrot. She also spent the entire time telling us how much better her family were in Australia.

Well I'll have to pull up the family tree for all the back info, I have looked into it some time or another and know that I'm Scottish/German descendant. Our religion has been Presbyterian since as far back as my Great Great Grrrreeat Grandfather on my Dad's side, and Lutheran on my Mom's side.

Mom: Born in Nashville,TN
My Mom's side has the German blood, and my Dad's side is the Scottish blood. My Grandfather fought in World War 2, he was in the Navy and when he returned finished up College at Ole Miss. He became chancellery to the city/state and help fund a lot of organizations as a tax advisory.

Dad: Born in Moss Point,MS
My Dad's side had a lot of political figures. My Great Great grandfather was governor of Mississippi. My great Grandfather was mayor of Moss Point Mississippi. From what I know apparently we've had some other aristocrats but I'll have to look into my Uncle's "wood" family tree he drew up.

Genetically I have a very high alcohol tolerance (destined to alcoholism) and prone to smoke tabacco it seems. My Mom's side has many bouts of cancer cases, even she had breast cancer back in 92-95. My Dad's side has a high risk of Heart disease as well as Cancer. So far we've had around 4 cousins die of cancer as young as 35 on my Dad's side.

I don't know too much about my family history but meh..

My families heritage is mostly Irish and Spanish.

On my Mum's side

My Grandpa served in the Korean war and the Vietnam war. He died in 2007, I don't really know anything else about him. I don't know much about my Grandma either.

My Mum was born in England while her parents were on holiday. She has an older sister and a younger brother and sister who are twins.

On my Dad's side

My Grandma died when I was about 5. She had my Dad at a young age. She travelled around the country alot and didn't live with my Dad for alot of his childhood. She enjoyed riding horses. She was commited to a psychiatric hospital when my Dad was about 5 and released when he was 9.

My Grandpa was a heavy gambler. Apparently he used to rig the horse races in Melbourne. At one stage he was a millionaire but he blew it all on gambling. I've never met him and I'm not sure if he is still alive.

My Dad has changed his name 5 times. He was sent to foster care when my Grandma was sent to the psychiatric hospital, he stayed there until she was released. When he was about 16 my Grandma wanted to move to the country, but my Dad didn't want to go, so he stayed in Adelaide by himself and lived alone during high school. He then started working as a singer and he travelled a fair bit (across the country and later around the world with my Mum).

On my mother's side, my great-grandfather was pure Spanish. Apparently during the war here between the Filipinos and the Spaniards, he was part of the military (colonel, if I'm not mistaken) and he fell in love with a Filipina (I saw the pictures and my great-grandmother really was beautiful. :gonk:). When the Americans and Spaniards made a treaty and agreed the former would take over the country, my great-grandfather stayed.

My great-grandfather on my father's side was a Don. He owned a very large part of the land in Quezon. He had four wives, and my great-grandmother was his last.

Those are the interesting things I remember. The succeeding generations didn't have much of a story to tell. >_>

On my Dad's side:

My grandparent was the leader of our "clan" which is like 3 families, he participated and tried to defend our land in Palestine "Deir Yassin", well look it up on google, you'll know more, after that they left to Jordan because they were out of Fire Arm compared to the Israel.

Dad was also born in Jordan though he lived in those like refugees camp had a rough life and still can be seen how it affected him.

(Great grandfather was Egyptian)

On my mom's side:

Well her "clan" left Palestine on the news of what happened in Deir Yassin and went over to Jordan, my grandparent was like 12 when he started to work, started with tough things and had 8 kids, he has money now and all and he still works even though he's like 79 or something.

Mom was born in Jordan nothing much to say about it she just stayed there, studied till she entered university took a nurse training course to the USA and then came back.

(Great grandfather was Spanish)

mom's side;

my mom's paternal side was pure Italian (Sicilian and Napoli). Strangely, the last name my grandpa bore is completely unheard of; perhaps it was a translated name or something. Grandpa was a drinker and gambler, and I didn't get to know him very well since he died when I was in 2nd grade. Mom tells me stories about him, though; I wish he was still alive. His side of the family were very musically inclined, and one of them was an actress. I apparently have a secret Aunt, because my mom found the name and we have no idea who the hell she is. Italian culture is similar to Hispanic, so it shines through whatever else I am.

my mom's maternal side; my grandma's dad was Native American, but we don't know much about his roots since he was a heavy alcoholic and abandoned the family. They were dirt poor. My grandma's mother was Canadian French and a hardcore fundie. Grandma had whopping 12 siblings to grow up with. I don't know how the hell they survived, but my grandma has some interesting stories to tell.

father's side;

My mom left my dad a year ago after two decades of an abusive relationship. He said he grew up in the South Bronx. Very strange family. I don't have the entire scope since practically everything about them is a secret, and I had to find out things through my brother and my mom. My father is German on his dad's side, but he could also be something else because his father was the baby of a rape victim. His maternal side were British Jamaicans and part Syrian. I also heard there's some French, Irish, and Scottish, and maybe even black in the roots. My father's mother, as a child, apparently did really weird things, like tear up her dolls on purpose, then bury them in the ground and hold a funeral for them, and her brother, my grand uncle, is really weird and possible psychotic (the actual definition).

I know bugger all

My mum comes from Consett, Durham where my aunty carolyn still lives with her husband Ian. My mums mum died before I was born, grandad when I was very young. Her sisters (grandmas) moved, one to australia - dead now. I have cousins and shit Ive never met over there, and the other one lives somewhere down this neck of the woods, so if I wanted to learn out, Id have to speak to her, and aside from the fact i dont like her very much, ive not seen her for nigh on 10 years anyway. I dont even know if there is anyone else on my grandads side.... I actually know piss all about my mams side of the family

My dads side, well, no grandparents that side to ask either. Grandad died before I was born, I think he was in the navy, and my gran about 5 years ago. So all I know about that lot is they live in Rochdale, and as far as Im aware always have done

Only thing I know really, is how my mum met my dad. Her and my uncle Phil got talking to my dad and his sister (my aunty gail) over CB radio or some shit. Its a long time ago since I was told so Im not `100% and all ended up getting together/married etc. So that great aunty I dont like is also my cousin on my dads sides granma :gonk:

Ive not seen any of that side since ellie was 8 weeks old. So Im fucked if I know anything about any of my family really haha

No medical issues on either side to report bar high blood pressure and thats about it. Oh and neither my mum OR my dads side live very long so Im fucked :wacky:

My dad also seems to think we come from slavery and the name Bradford was the name the American family gave us as a sign of ownership I guess? He also seems to think we come from Indians, Native Americans, whatever the correct term is. So, its debatable, we're all blue/green eyed with pale skin xD

The only decent bit of information i have is probably fabricated from my dads craziness :monster:

I know very little...

My dad's mum died about a week after I was born and I only know that she was a poorly woman; she suffered from cancer, one of those kinds that racks the area with pain, and because it was in her early days and cancer treatment (and knowledge) was limited, no one believed her, and she was thrown in to a Psych hospital for a time because she wanted to "cut out the pain with a knife, hand me a knife and I'll get it out myself".

My dad's dad is a miserable old cunt, the last remaining grandad I have, I don't even remember his first name. I do know that he was fairly hard on my dad, though.

My mum's dad died when she was 5 and I only really know his name, nothing else. I inherited my colour blindness from him, the wanker. xD

My mum's mum died when I was 7 but she was absolutely fantastic. She worked in those typically horrible conditions...picking the potatoes from the field for about 20 hours a day for about 50p, struggling yet managing to get scraps on the table every night. She comes from a family of like 10 siblings.

That's as far as my knowledge goes.

I never knew my Grandparents, both died before I was born. Actually, my Grandfather died before the day I was born. Not much is really known about my Mom's side. However, on my Father's side of the family I found that the earliest traces of my family can be found in (Poland I believe, I'll have to check up on it again). Where my Great (repeat quite a few times) Grandfather was an outlaw who had his mouth sewn shut for spreading "lies and blasphemy" against the government and religion.

The first of my family in America was a captain of a Pirate ship.

Apparently, (somehow I doubt this) a member of my family owned the bar that The Sons of Liberty met in before the American Revolution.

However, I am related to a certain Old West Outlaw that appeared in the movie "Tombstone".

If my family History is correct, then I am related to Saint Peter, whitch is great, except for the fact that I'm an Atheist XD

BBBBBBUT, I'm also related to Sir. Eric Hunt, so I think that makes me some kind of nobility....somewhere...
