Final Fantasy Versus XIII doesn’t have an open world. The upcoming PlayStation 3 game has the feeling of a 2D Final Fantasy game in HD.

“There have been many questions related to the field, it is not a completely open world, it has the feeling of a 2D FF in HD,” Tetsuya Nomura tweeted.

However, the game does not use a top down perspective with a sprite on a map. Nomura says Final Fantasy Versus XIII world looks like the screenshots and players will move through the world from that perspective.

Nomura also said he is casting roles for Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. In fact, Final Fantasy Agitio XIII is next after The 3rd Birthday’s voice recording finishes.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII will not be at Gamescom, though. Nomura said, like E3, The 3rd Birthday and Kingdom Hearts will be there.

I quite like the sound of that form of World Map, Versus just seems flawless at this point, hopefully the finished product will follow suit :mokken:

Old school world maps ftw <3

It's still going to be much better than that piece of shit, FFXIII. Then again, that's not setting the bar very high. :ffs:

Wh its not completely Open? So its just a bit open? I remember in some news they said you can go anywhere except mountains. Though then again this isnt Just cause 2

Ffxiii wasn't shit!! :rage:

But this is a bit of a let down. No open world, so no exploring? If there's no open world then versus is gonna be a hell of a lot linear than ffxiii.

2D FF..in HD- THE HELL DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?

Like FFVI in HD? If that's the case, then that isn't so bad.

Highly doubt this game will be linear. Nomura said it himself, you can go anywhere except the mountains. I expect him to keep his word, and if he doesn't I'm taking the first trip to Japan and shove every game he's ever worked on. I'll start with XIII. (Yes, I know he was only a character designer in that one, sod off)

I'll try and make a point thats relevant in this one.

Wow..........This sound an awful lot like the world map from White night chronicles, if I read the details right, Kind of like seeing the world map as single Image in the screen and moving the cursor over the various locations the player has visited and selecting to enter or not possibly with a list of available shops and Inns?

Thats sounds like know air ship manipulation..............:rage:

Edit:Wait a damn minute!

Reading that again makes it sound like the pre-rendered scapes from FFVII,FFVIII,FIX and even FFX........where you move around a location within the set paths such as up and down stairs, but with out the camera following.

If exploring the the various field maps is like it was back in the day I would take that as win...........

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sacrificing open world graphics for sheer size is gonna allow more money to be put towards OST, gameplay and FMVs. I don't mind slightly reduced graphics.

Versus was never going to be "open world". I never expected it to be. The term "open world" usually refers to games where you can freely explore wherever you want. So something like RDR and Just Cause 2. And just because there's no real "open world" doesn't mean there will not be any element of exploration either. Versus can have many large locations where you can run around in. It doesn't mean that it will be like FFXIII. Seeing as Versus does have a world map, it's already nothing like the linear affair that FFXIII gave us.

We've also been told we can have airships in this game. Why would they give us free roaming airships unless there were huge areas to explore?

From the news about VersusXIII that has been released until now, the game seems quite promising. I never did mind the linear gameplay of FFXIII as to me Gran Pulse made up for it, atleast for me. However VersusXIII seems to end up being quite the experience. Can't wait until more news on the game.

hmmm I liked Rogue Galaxy, KH1 , Dragon Age and also the free roaming aspect from FF12 . I hoped they would put those elements in versus, but no......bummer but still this oldskool will make a lot of peepz happy im sure.

This already sounds better.......
along with the airship looks like final fantasy is getting back on it's feet but it's still too early to say weather it will be a good game or not.

but most people just judge by the linearity of the game as they did for FFXIII at least this one won't be.

I don't think 2D FF are linear either............so this one won't be...........

However ion my opinion I don't give a fuck about the linearity as long as the story is good.......it's good enough for me.

the only thing I could think of would be they mean you can run around the world map, but when you want to go into a town, you run into it and it loads.

When I think of free roaming, I think of running straight into a town like Fallout 3 or something.

well it's obvious that they're searching for ways to bring back elements that fans love, like freely roaming a world map with an airship

it may be awkward to do world maps with new graphics, but I'm not understanding what they mean by 2D in HD, I don't think fans would care at all if they just gave upgraded versions of the world maps in VII-IX, then just do the real graphics in the places themselves

He's saying there will be a world map, and it won't be open like FF XII. If you don't know how the maps are in that game, just look up some youtube vids.

Can someone back me up on this in case I'm wrong?

FFXII isn't really that "open" at all. I mean, it definitely lacks the linearity that FFX and FFXIII share, but that's kind of where it ends. It lets the player roam around certain areas, yet it does often restrict the player from going wherever they want to until later.

As Nomura's describing it as being just like the 2D FF games but in 3D, it will no doubt work similarly to the 2D titles. In the older FF games, you're never allowed to wander around wherever you want to in the world. Usually a mountain, or lake or whatever stops you in your place and prevents it from becoming "open" if you will. I can see Versus employing this same idea, especially when Nomura commented about not being able to traverse past the mountains in one of the screenshots.

But how it works when you want to leave the world map and enter an area like a town I am unsure of though, especially as they refused to make Noctis giant-sized on the world map like the pre-FFX games and decided to use a more realistic scale. It's still ambiguous I admit.
