[1/18] A Blurry Look At Final Fantasy XIII-2 And Lightning’s New Rival [Update]

SPOILER ALERT for those that havent finished FF13 yet,

Ive put up a new working youtube vid and this one has no FF13 spoilers.

Before we get to scrambled screenshots, 4gamer posted this picture of Lightning in her new Final Fantasy XIII-2 costume.

These screenshots were from a teaser trailer of the Square Enix 1st Production Premiere. Motomu Toriyama, director of Final Fantasy XIII and its sequel, explained the game will have a dramatic story involving Lightning’s rival. In the teaser video, Lightning clashed swords with a new character dressed in purple clothes.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is slated for release this year in Japan.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 was just announced by Square Enix at their 1st Production Department conference at Roppongi Hills, Japan. Japanese gamers will get to play the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII sometime this year.

Meanwhile, Square Enix Europe and USA shot out a press release of their own, mentioning that Westerners get Final Fantasy XIII “next winter,” which sounds like it could be a year from now. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is slated for release this year in Japan.

They also say that the game will “exceed” Final Fantasy XIII in every way and feature an “evolved” battle system, but don’t go into specifics.

Motomu Toriyama, the director of both Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, stated that the game will feature a dramatic story involving lead character Lightning’s rival. The game’s tagline is why “does mankind defy its fate?”

Yay for shield, sword and armor! This hints for the traditional equipping system. Really can't wait another year for this game. The rival could also be her love interest? Hopefully it is 'dramatic' in a good way.

I'm a sap for rivalry so I feel this'll add as a USP for me and a few others. And I kinda dig Lightning's new outfit, she looks like a girl version of Soul Calibur's Siegfried.

Going by that though, I have no idea what to expect of battle gameplay, I'm half expecting more of a 1 player action RPG now.

Perhaps, there will be exploration now, since the whole FFXIII world is safe from the ultimate beings known as Fal'Cie.

And I agree with Light's new gear, it's pretty badass, and that other guy looks like Kain, right?

I dont get why she needs all that bulky armor when theres supposedly advanced technology in the hands of the humans. I guess I'll have to see more....Something tells me this game may be rushed a bit but it's a garuntee the ending of XIII might be ruined since -possible spoil- they all claimed they had a vision where "everyone was laughing and smiling" including Fang Maybe this game is the future they saw.

Please tell me you're joking D= I do like them two, but I'd rather that be some out of the body experience where they see the two again to have final words, that, I'm fine with, but to bring them back, no, FFXIII's ending was bittersweet and perfect.

I hope this vision doesn't come to light, FFX's ending being not completely ruined, admittedly, but having some of the sadness taken away by X-2's ending, but it did make it less effective. It wouldn't completely ruin the story, but I felt that losing them had a very powerful impact that we won't get out of XIII's ending again if they come back.

as rubbish as FFXIII was, i still get excited when i see a new one even if it is a sequel, what i dont understand though is why show a new FF when they still ahve Agito and Versus to make.

Oh dear, have SE not learned their lesson yet? Did they not realise that X-2 and other spin offs of FF titles didn't get the reaction that they were hoping for? And now they're bringing out a sequel to XIII? That had a decent ending with all the ends tied up and everything?

And it looks like they've basically sexed Lightning up like they did with Yuna, I'm really not liking the look of this if I'm honest.

I have to say, I'm impressed by this, I wonder if they have been working on it the whole time, gives it a 2 year cycle. A chance to use all the material that didn't make the original game perhaps too.

This. I'll reserve judgement on the game itself until I see more of what it has to offer but I'm not a fan of the armor look. I'm not going to go into it too much since there may be a reason why she's wearing it but I really hope she's not wearing it throughout the game. By and large the outfits in Final Fantasy XIII were fine anyway.

I also found the medieval redesign of Lightning odd, but then I thought about it and remembered that they'd all be

on Gran Pulse now, and would effectively have to start to build civilisations again. They'd still have advanced tech, as even the ancient ruins of Pulse were advanced, but I can imagine that technology would be more scarce for a time as they try and concentrate on settling the land and basically surviving

Perhaps the characters find themselves having to bulk up in outdated armour in order to survive

while they settle. It sounds lame, really, but if this means that we'll get to see Sazh and the baby chocobo in armour then I'm game!

Alternatively they just wanted us to yell "what the f*ck?!" and want to know more, and hence we'll now all probably follow this, and we'll therefore be more likely to buy it one day, even if we say we won't.

The game definitely looks interesting. However from afar, XIII also looks interesting. I kind of think XIII-2 will be about the same quality as XIII... no matter how you slice it, you still have a game based on a game which happened to have a confusing storyline.

FFXIII didnt get mostly bad reception. Most review sites gave it scores in the 8 range. which is by no means a bad game.

Fans had mixed feelings on it. Some loved the story, music, battle system, and characters. Some didnt like any of it. Most thought it was too linear, but an adequate game. Now they want to make a BETTER game than before. How can anyone be pissed at that? As long as they deliver that, then its fine in my book. Just because a game is a sequel, doesnt mean its unoriginal or bad.

Why must humans defy their fate huh? I predict more problems with the Fal'cie (sp?) in humanities future.

The funny thing is, I'm probably going to get this game despite my opinion of the original's gameplay. I'm a Lightning fan so maybe they'll improve it.

Well the unknown guy just looks like one of those old FF characters a bit like Kain........enemy or not who cares? Im just happy about this game actually being developed.

As for lightning I prefer her old outfit.........no diss but she does kind of remind me of one of those spartan movie (300) warriors! Still......looking beautiful as ever!
