i didn't check if this thread exist already but, i was watching the movie Avatar and was wondering.... did they steal the character Kimahri from FFX?? and the sceneries and colorful creatures look closely to those of FF games. Did Square Enix get involved in the movie that i didn't know about?

lolwut?

Don't you know you can steal anything from anyone? Just tweak, name and send. Totally legal. :griin:

Oh shut up man, just think twice before posting ,no one used any character of SE !

No need to be rude to him. :hmph:

There are many things similar to FF in Avatar, he's right. It's just unlikely, and can't be proven even if true that he borrowed concepts from the games.

That being said, Avatar is sex. :griin: Got it on Blu-ray.

Likewise :ryan:

But yeah, even if the character designs of the Avatars was taken from Kimahri, it'd be nigh impossible to prove it :monster: if you wanted to nitpick, nearly anything in any game is stolen from something else if you get paranoid enough, being 100% original is hard to pull off with so many ideas out there now.

we could even argue that Kimahri is a Smurf rip-off :hmmm:

but yeah, pretty much what everyone else said. if SE successfully sue them it'll just lead to many other companies suing SE for 'taking' their works.

I wouldn't say that SE should sue James Cameron as I wouldn't say that Cameron even based his design for the Na'vi on Kimahri. Both Kimahri and the Na'vi were likely both inspired by Hinduism, as Avatar definitely was, and FFX was also designed to have a Hindu feel to it.

I don't think that anything else in the movie really resembled FF, other than great scenery which is something which our own planet did first.

1) Please don't post one liners that add nothing to the thread.
2) Please don't be rude or insulting even if you think a thread is silly or unneeded.

That said, assuming this is a serious thread, I'll leave it here in the FFX section. If it turns into spam, it'll be shifted over to FF Fun. =)

While I can see some resemblances between Kimahri and the Na'vi, but to suggest anything further is quite a big push. As Dan said, both were probably drawn from Hindu imagery and most - perhaps all - games, films, books, other forms of media draw inspiration from things in our world. The similarities between FFX and Avatar are too vague and small anyway, and as mentioned you have one heck of a job to try and "prove" it. SE has no real reason to sue, otherwise companies and corporations will be too busy suing each other and bankrupting each other all the time.

I must admit though, when SE once claimed that James Cameron and his team stole several ideas from FFXIII a little while back, I laughed at that stupid comment. :lew:

They couldn't sue because, well... they look nothing alike :/

Also, Cameron started planning Avatar in 1994 so, who should sue who. :dave:

Lol he decided to make the Nav´i blue much much later on.. and Ronso´s have horns..the navi doont have horns :mokken:

Actually how do you think Hollywood and the movie industry in general survived all of these years? Most of the movies nowadays borrow elements from other movies, whether they are from the same decade or earlier. We even have remakes because the industry is suffering from a severe lack of originality, so they recur on taking good blockbuster hits from the past and remake them for the new generation to enjoy.

We also had the era of books turned into movies, like The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Twilight, and many others.

We rarely have 100% original movies, and those who are close I bet their origins can be tracked down to a book or a legend.

As for SE suing James Cameron? We should sue Square Enix for sucking at keeping the standards when it came to FF and RPG quality. :mokken:

I can't say anything about the character you're talking about from Avatar since I have never seen it. However, as stated, ideas get taken from different things all the time. It is nothing new. Unless they literally copy Kimahri from head to toe, complete with name and all, SE has no right to sue because I am sure they got some of their ideas the same way.

Also, what similarities do Kimahri and a smurf have in common besides being blue?

Yeah, while I can see that at first glance it seems like there may be a few similarities, I don't think it was an intentional ripoff either :hmmm: However, from what I've heard about it, Avatar ripping off Pocahontas may be a lawsuit worth looking into :wacky: Or American history in general, but that of course can't collect on a lawsuit :hmmm:

Avatar seems to steal from a lot. Reminds of the quote, "Steal from one, it's plagiarism. Steal from many, it's research."

Like people have said, very little can be accounted for as "original" nowadays, nearly all films, books and games take ideas from elsewhere. The difficult thing with Pocahontas [mentioned above] is that it isn't stealing from anyones "idea" as she was real, and well documented.

All being said, I'll go back to the point that the Navi and Kimahri look nothing alike. It's not like this:

Nah, man. The blue things in that movie look jus' like the blue thing from X... like to a T. :mokken:

But, no one can sue.

Honestly, the only resemblence that I see between Kihmari and the Na'vi are that they are blue.

I think Kihmari looks more like Chewbacca than the Na'vi look like Kihmari. Should George Lucas sue Square Enix? (And FF games do have several Star Wars references in them)

Just because a movie has a character of a blue race (or different world, whatever) doesn't mean that they copied SE.

I mean im sure SE don't own every blue person or character being used in a movie or game thats just stupid.

plus the ronso's look nothing like the blue guys in avatar........

Ronso's are big, they have horns, they live in snowy mountains, dress differently etc etc.

I haven't seen the movie but I'd say that the only similarity I see is they both use spears...........But nothing big enough for SE to sue anyone.
