Do you prefer VIII's realistic characters, or IX's cartoonish, cute, fantasy style?

I like that IX is different, and it's great! Though I prefer the realism of VIII. They look more like adults than children too. :P

What do you think?

I think the purpose of a game is mostly related to it's escapist quality so maybe it's the more unreal graphics that I can relate to BUT I know the further games go in the industry the more designers want to max out there capability so we'll probably see more real graphics to come.

It didn't take super defined graphics to get me attached to Aerith, is all I'm saying...

Out of the two, I would Final Fantasy IX, mainly because I just loved the general art direction and thought that characters were brilliantly designed. However, I do love realistic designs like FFVIII, take FFXIII (especially in Serah's case) and FFXIII Versus (Noctis/Stella), Nomura has gone completely for a modern realistic look, and in my opinion, he's pulled it off amazingly well.

So yeah, out of those two titles, I preferred FFIX's more "cartoony" design, but overall I prefer realism.

I liked Final Fantasy IX's style, but I just have a big soft spot with more technologically advanced worlds; therefore I'd prefer the Final Fantasy VIII style. The more realistic rendering of the characters can create more emotional, stronger bonds with those particular characters, and I like the style that Nomura has opted for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. For example, can you empathise more with an anthropomorphic hippo, or someone like Stella or Noctis? It's the latter for me.

Although I love the futuristic style in FFVIII, and it works amazingly well for that game, FFIX wins for me.

I think FFIX has much more of a "fantasy" feel about it, than FFVIII, and the art style really is better, the characters stand out to me much more in IX than they do in VIII, and with it being more fantasy, it has some really beautifully designed places, that wouldn't be possible in FFVIII.

This was a hard one for me but I went for the FF9 style.
I do love the realistic characters, but we haven't really had a cartoony style of game since FF9 and I thought it worked really well. Like Stevie Nicks said, the style of character added to the fantasy feel of the game.
I hope they try a similar thing in the new FF games, I really loved FF9 :)

I would also have to go with IX. It is my favorite game out of the series, and I enjoyed the graphics. It seemed to me that everything was so damned gloomy in FFVIII. Not only that, I wasn't a big fan of most of the characters, and in my opinion they just seem... Out of place against the background. Whereas in FFIX, all of the characters look as if they belong there.

I like it when they look more realistic.. D:

Mod Edit: Please make sure to add more effort to your post. Thanks. =]

FFVIII was a completely futuristic game with fantasy elements in it. I prefer more of a medieval fantasy feel to my games (at least for now because I've played enough futuristic games recently). But on the other hand I prefer a more realistic look to the game like FFVIII, but that doesn't mean that I didn't like FFIX's art style. It was pretty cute and colorful. Not so dreary like FFVIII.

Definitely VIII. Although character models in IX were a lot better, compared to VIII's, scenery in VIII just seemed far more impressive then IX's

I think I prefer VIII's....although the characters looked like shit..... they were so..... scruffy looking

IX's were nicer to LOOK at, but I think I prefer the realistic look over all

I'll have to say FFIX's style.

I prefered the fantasy elements and I think the look of the characters and the world in this FF was the height of the entire series. The models were quite clear and not smudgy and the world was pretty stunning to look at.

I also prefer fantasy over realism in Final Fantasy games, though I still enjoy sci-fi / modern / futuristic style FF games such as FFVII and FFVIII. I think where design is involved having culture is more important. Creating cultures with their own ways of dressing / own habbits and own look about them makes the games stunning. FFIX had this, but so did FFVIII in a different way.

Overall though I'll have to say FFIX by far for me. If it were up to me the rest of the FF's would be done in a similar way. I miss those types of maps, and the character models were at their best with this game and fitted the maps well.

I don't think FF8 was gloomy as some of you are pointing out. The look and feel of some of the places were fantastic. Some areas were kinda gloomy, but they looked very realistic and how the places would actually look. 9 had gloomy areas too, I felt the world map for 9 was very gloomy.

I'd rather play with characters that looked realistic and more normal. For example, Zidane:

His head looks far too big for his body, and his body is too small. Where as the characters in FF8 looked more normal and proportional like this:

^ If Zidane and Garnet did that, it would probably look weird. Not nearly as clear and realistic as this, because of their small character frames.

Also the characters in the FMV's just looked so much more beautiful and realistic in 8:

Not to say 9 didn't have great graphics, it did. I still really like the look of 9 and really enjoyed the game. But I prefer my games to look more realistic and life-like, I can relate to them better. Especially when most are human. :P But these are games of course, fantasy games and it's great that they tried something new.

Thats a tough one because each final fantasy seems to have thier own distint style however i did vote for VIII as it relates more as i found it deeper so i voted for wrong reasons i guess sorry
=(

I'm all for realism in games. I just have to be able to relate... Otherwise it's cute, sure, but I don't get so deep into the game. It's more like watching a cartoon for me when it's something like FFIX. Not saying I didn't like it, but... it's just not the same.

VIII.

I'm probably a little biased since it was my first Final Fantasy (technically, the demo from Brave Fencer Musashi was), but aside from that; pretty much every reason that Lisa (aka Misty) has stated.

The art style of IX is the one I prefer.

The style has a more "fantasy" feel to me and the character models give the characters themselves more personality. Since they look so personalized, they truly have their own thing going for them. They truly look like from different parts of the world.

VIII to me is too generic. Everyone is modeled more realistically and contemporary. I was very disinterested with some characters because of this. Though I loved Irvine's outfit, not original but a lot of personality.

I liked the futuristic style of FFVIII waaay more. I don't like when games look too childish, which is why I was turned off of FFIX for a bit. FFVIII looked more presentable and serious. FFIX seemed like some kids game and I couldn't take it serious when story events came about.

Deff liked VIII's realism. IX characters and scenery and whatnot wasn't bad but, I perfer something more realistic. and like che said IX's graphics seemed more fantasy-ish and that's what I thought too. IX wasn't all that bad for the time and I thought the overall character design wasn't bad but VIII was better so imma have ta go with VIII :monster:
