Both looked fantastic, but I preferred VIII's. I preferred the realistic proportions to the proportions in IX. I think with IX, the strange proportions contributed to what made the game so great for example I can't imagine IX with realistic proportions. But likewise I can't imagine VIII's characters with large heads like IX's. To put it simple, FFIX's crazy proportions worked because it was FFIX.

For some reason I don't like Zidane's character design. He's a monkey, and monkeys are crap. The overall style is decent. But I prefer XIII's over IX's.

I like both styles, but I prefer the more realistic designs. I think I can't take the story of a game like FFX or FFXII seriously when the main characters would have big heads, tails or a big toung hanging over their belly.

I admit at first I kind of wrinkled my nose at FFIX's graphics after the more realistic proportions of FFVIII, but I eventually came to really like the cartoony proportions of FFIX. I thought it was interesting route to take but it seemed to match the game phenomenally well.

However, I think I still prefer more realistic proportions if I had to chose before playing the game.

But I guess it depends on the game as well. In all honestly, I'm having trouble imagining FFIX with "proper" proportions. Even Amano's concept art for FFIX just looked odd to me 'cause they were more realistic than what was actually in the game xD

I honestly can not choose. There are character designs from both VIII and IX that I like and hate.

I never liked Selphie or Zell's character designs. I think with Selphie it was her hair and her outfit. Completely unflattering for her. And Zell, his hair annoyed me and so did that tatoo.

I however, did really like Irvine and Quistis's character design. They were different from the typical FF characters.

In IX, Quina just terrified me and Armarant just looked odd. I did like Zidane and Freya though as well as Vivi.

So they are both about the same for me.

As for which world I prefered, I'd have to say IX because we finally got a fantasy setting for an FF game in 3D. And most of the towns were just beautiful.

I prefer FFVIII's designs over FFIX's. Sure, they're both great games in their own respects. The character designs fit the game's storylines.

However, I'd say that I definitely prefer the realistic designs. I love realism in games, so, the more realistic the better.

Decisions, decisions. VIII was the first FF I played so I kinda fell in love with it a little. And I wasn't as big a fan of IX when it first came out. But played through it again last year and loved it. Gorgeous landscapes and cityscapes. Really liked Lindblum, the continents, the gargant networks. It really took you to another place. I always hated Steiner too, but I really liked him last time round. His Character design was great, I loved his iron shod trainers! Vivi was an amazing design too, cute but mystical.

But you always have a soft spot for your first love. I remember the first mission Dollet, where the boats are speeding across the sea, that was when I knew I was playing a different type of game. And even with the craziness of later on in the game, I still loved it. The characters what made you out yourself in their place though. Similar age, similar faults/idiosyncracies (probably just teenage agnst, but the characters seemed to understand you). Also looked pretty cool. Well to a 14-15 yr old!

Close call but has to be VIII for me. Probably has nothing to do with me liking realistic over fantasy characters though, I like both! It's just personal preference. :neomon:

VIII gets my vote. I love realistic looking characters, but also the wild wacky sort. Im an odd person lol. But given the choice between these 2, I take 8's characters. For the time the game was made, they look amazing.
