Cabin In the Woods.

Fucking fantastic film. I was not expecting that at all. I started the film and I was expecting some terribly written and directed satire horror film (like the scream films) and I was so amazed with the end outcome. It made me laugh but somehow gave me the creeps at the same time. It was a different kind of "creepy" but nonetheless creepy. It's just an overall great film. Besides the make-out scene and the CGI snake I would say this film was flawless. :ryan:

I highly suggest it to anyone.

it was lovely to see simon pegg and nick frost, et al, on screen again doing what they do best. i loved that they kept a lot of the themes from the first two films going strong in this one, however it does feel like they have tried a little too hard to make another cult classic. the film just wasn't quite as quotable (with a few exceptions) as both shaun of the dead and hot fuzz, and it sadly didn't make me laugh as hard as they did. it wasn't a bad film in any way, but pegg, frost and wright have set themselves a very high bar and couldn't rise to it a third time.

I saw that recently too. It was an ok comedy but nothing particularly good, certainly nowhere near as good as the previous two. The ending was absolutely awful though, totally out of place and just plain terrible. Really ended the film on a dreadful note.
 
I watched 2 films today

Arrietty


Film4 are doing a Studio Ghibli season over here right now, and this was the film that was on today. For people that don't know this is Ghibli's version of the famous tale The Borrowers. I adored the film, it has quite a few hidden messages in it, the characters were great for the most part. and the animation was top notch, one of Stuido Ghibli's better films - 8.5/10 mostly due to the old lady character being mrr for character development, and the dad not being developed on as much as i hoped. The wild small person could of been developed quite a bit more as well.

Olympus Has Fallen

Pretty much die hard, set in the white house without bruce willis. and it does the job very well, it has action, it has good lines, and it has GUNS AND EXPLOSIONS, what more could of you asked for. joking aside, the characters were done pretty well , the acting was good and it had some great action scenes, sadly however the film is very dark 'in the lighting department not as in serious' so it was pretty dam hard to see in some parts. 7.5/10

a really cool horror anthology of found-footage style films directed by various different people. it's about a group of criminals who break into a house to find a certain video tape and while looking for it watch a lot of the videos left around the house. most of the shorts are really good, but there are one or two that were a bit crap, and they all fall into typical horror clichés, but they're all forgivable for being genuinely interesting and cool.
 
Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.

Not really big on Alan, not that I don't like him; i've just not had the opportunity to watch much of his stuff but his humour is right up my street. It wasn't hilariously outrageously stupid like some other comedys but it was pretty good and did have some very good moments. 7/10
 
Dredd

I don't really know how I felt by the time the film was over. I never saw the first film, so I can't compare the two. But I found this movie to be entertaining at times, but could also be pretty boring. There wasn't enough to the characters for me to really route for them. It had one of the most forgettable bad guys I've seen in a film since ever. Overall, I'd give it like a 4 out of 10. It wasn't horrible, or necessarily bad. But I didn't think it was a particularly good film.

i got to see an early screening of it a few days ago, and loved it. i thought it was an absolutely incredible film, and was beautifully styled. had it been released later in the year, i would put it down as an outsider for one or two oscars, but it's sadly been released a bit too early for oscar season. neither chris hemsworth or daniel bruhl will win leading/supporting actor awards (though bruhl is pretty great as nicki lauda), but they're both very enjoyable to watch as rivals. since i'm not a formula 1 fan, i had absolutely no idea who won the championship, so i found the final act of the film quite tense and very thrilling. i fully recommend it to everyone.
there are also cameos from natalie dormer (margaery tyrell) and whoever the guy was that played jory cassell, meaning ron howard is a fan of game of thrones.
 
The last film I watched was Taken 2, on one of those Sky channels. It was a decent action flick. Not particularly stellar, not horrible. Liam Neeson was the star and standout of the film.


Cinema wise... I'd have to think about it... Ah yes. The Wolverine. It was your average comic-book film: borrowing from a well-loved series of installments(Obviously, they aren't going to pick the shit unloved tales, now are they?) of Wolverine's time in *SPOILER*Japan*UNSPOILER*.


It was...Better than Origins. Definitely. I enjoyed the setting since it was so different compared to usual films(Like Lost in Translation and F&F Tokyo Drift) it has a small little sliver of a spot in my heart, since I love the locale it's set in.

Otherwise... Nahh. It didn't completely appeal to me. Perhaps it was because of Iron-man 3 being released earlier in Summer that I just didn't feel amazed by the super hero vibe.

Still, I'm looking forward to X-Men: Days of Future Past(If you stayed late in The Wolverine, you'll know why I'm saying this).
 
Hmm...I'm not sure actually. So I'll say the last three I remember...

1.) WWZ (w/ Brad Pitt) - MY FIRST BRAD PITT MOVIE!!!!! I finally got to see and hear him live in action...because previous to this, I never saw anything of Brad Pitt except quick flashes of him on celebrity gossip news or on magazine covers. I never understood what the whole "Brad Pitt" craze was all about. Anyway, I watched the movie because the concept seemed interesting and I heard it might be good. Overall, I liked the film. *Spoilers* BUT, I thought that Brad Pitt should've died at the end. That ending was intense already, but him dying would've made it even more disheartening. I felt like this was the kind of movie it should have been. And the army woman from Turkey should've somehow turned into a zombie, like maybe Brad didn't cut off her arm quick enough or something; she, along with that woman who turned into one yet was strapped into her seat that Brad saw after the plane crash, should have chased him out of that forest into the town where the research facility was. And I also think Brad found the cure too fast. That was too good of a guess for what the cure probably was. The movie was too...lighthearted. I wanted more heaviness and action. The zombies piling on top of each other, though, was cool because it was different from other zombie movies that I've seen. Interesting idea.

2.) The Conjuring - I didn't like it because it was too typical of an American horror movie. I hid my eyes in some scenes and did get scared, but overall, not a good film. Same-o Emily Ross exorcism repeated. Unnecessary romance. Just boring, typical, and frustrating like most American horror movies. I was very disappointed, especially hearing how it was getting good reviews. Why?

3.) Brothers (w/ Toby Maguire) - It was good. I liked it. I liked how the movie took its time unraveling everything. *Spoilers* It was very sad, though, what happened between Toby and his partner before he got to head back home again. I feel like that should've happened differently, though...where they both could have returned home... Also, I feel like Toby should have gone even crazier. And I feel like the older daughter acted older than her age; if they were going to make her be the breaking point in the way she did it, they should have put a teenager instead. It just didn't feel or sit right with me.
 
The Hobbit

:ohoho: I loved it. Id dare say i liked it better than any of the LOTR films. I bought it on bluray when it came out but it was only last night that i decided to watch it for whatever reason. There isnt mmuch attraction for me in going to the cinema but i would put serious thought into going to see the next part of the film when its out in december.
 
Man of Steel

It was pretty average in my opinion. I know its a reboot but i hate having to hear the stupid story of how he became Superman. Its a trend these days with superhero movies -___- Though funnily enough i thought it was done pretty well and the first hour and 20 minutes was my favourite part of the movie.
Superman himself well...The actor playing him was fine i thought. No quarrels there. But it seems like they kinda steered away from what superman actually is, or rather who he is. As you would expect hes very quick to save people when he can and that last scene where it looks like the family is gunna die he gets really upset and hes screaming out after he kills General Zod. Yet hes got no problem smashing through the city, blowing up gas stations etc. Superman is meant to be the definitive good guy. Theyve went more action go in this movie which is fine with me but his personality. If your gunna make him a little darker then do that and stick with it. Its a reboot afterall. But dont have him doing everything he can to save people then blowing up a city and likely killing loads more 10 minutes later.
I liked that they didnt show the whole Clark Kent and him being a mild mannered reporter bullshit. I know thats part of the character but it can really slow down the film if not done right (Superman returns being an example of a shit SM film) I almost thought at the end that when he goes for his job at the Daily Planet Lois wasnt gunna recognise him. Thankfully they didnt play her down to be a complete idiot.
Visually the film looked great but you expect nothing else on a 200+ million dollar budget. The action scenes were alright. I didnt think it was that exciting. Thats really all i can say about them. Overall I did enjoy it but it wasnt the definitive Superman film i thought i was really hoping it would be. I wanted this film to really excel so i could look forward to the upcoming crossover with Batman. Id give it a 6.5/10 or aroundabouts.
 
everyone seems to have a problem with the destruction factor in man of steel, but i didn't mind it. i think it shows a weakness and a flaw in his character and it gives them something to build on in the future. my problem with superman is how he's always been flawless and perfect, so i like that they humanised him a bit. i much preferred his superman to his clark kent though
 
If they had stuck with that theme in the film it wouldnt have bothered me but having him change so rapidly from the guy who wants to save everyone to a giant wrecking ball who doesnt give a crap was just stupid i thought. Its not who Superman is meant to be.

Ironman 3 was the last film i saw. Spoilers.

Ironman....more like toy soldiers. So many suits get destroyed in that film like theyre made of fucking cheap crappy plastic it was laughable. I really enjoyed the first half of the film aswell. It was more about Stark and less on the action and him destroying everything as the Ironman but the story and dialogue was pretty good so i quite enjoyed it. The film went downhill for me after the real villain turns out to be nothing more than an actor high on illegals. The action scenes at the end were pretty naff aswell i thought. you had him calling in new suits every 15-20 seconds. Then repeating the process after each one was turned into scrap metal after one punch. For me it was definitely the weakest of the trilogy and an average film at best. Id heard mostly negative reviews for it from people i know hence why id put off watching it for a while. One of the very few times i think its rating on IMDB is way way overated and especially Rotten Tomatoes but those guys have no taste at all. Without Robert Downey Junior i probably would have stopped watching it first 10 minutes into the 2nd half of the film. Hes a very exciting actor i think and a lot of fun to watch.
 
insidious 2

i wasn't a huge fan of the first one, but i quite enjoy trashy horror films in that vein. it starts off about a day after the first, after the family have moved in to the father's childhood home with his mother. weird things continue to happen etc. etc. much like the first one, i thought it had a decent first half that was quite creepy, but typically like most other horror films. the second half, however, was painfully cheesy and very poor.
 
Pride and Glory

Watched this movie ages ago with Jeff, couldn't for the life of me remember what I was called even though I wanted to watch it again. Finally got hold of the name again. I forgot the person in this movie reminded me so much of Stang. :lew: Such an amazing movie, normally not a fan of Action/Drama, but this one is pretty damn good.

9/10.
 
Pain & Gain

Maybe I'm just that special kind of fucked up, but I thought it was a pretty hilarious movie. Based on a true story, details no doubt exaggerated or just plain doctored, but basically just watching a bunch of dudes trying to commit a crime and get rich. feel bad for the survivors who feel like the movie is nothing more than a big lie, but i really enjoyed it.

despite it not being as good as the first, i really really enjoyed it. you could definitely tell it was directed by a game of thrones director as it had more of a fantasy feel to it, and i think that's down to seeing a lot more of asgard. i thought christopher eccleston played a very sinister malekith and it's a shame that he didn't get more screen time, or that he won't be used as a recurring villain.
it was good to see more of loki, but i do wish they'd leave him behind.
i never for one minute believed that he was dead, nor do i believe odin is. i just wish they would leave him dead and move on
. i also thought that despite eccleston being a good villian, the rest of the dark elves were entirely useless and were only there as fodder.

there are two stingers in this one, one mid-credits which sets up guardians of the galaxy and is quite awesome, and one post-credits which almost certainly sets up a future episode of s.h.i.e.l.d and which was quite shit.
 
Red Lights.

Came out in 2012 and stars Robert Deniro, Cillian Murphy and Sigourney weaver.

Basically Sigourney and Cillian are a pair of 'phycic' investigators. They go around exposing phoney phycics for the fakes they are. Robert Deniro plays a legendary phycic whos just came out of retirement and they decide to try and take him down. Expose him as a fraud.
In one word the film is completely naff. Theres no other word for it. Its one of them thrillers which you know is building up to some plot twist at the end which naturally it does but tis very anticlimatic and rather dull. I wont spoil any more of it but you should be able to get an idea if you really wanna watch it from my brief description. PErsonally i wuldnt bother unless your wanting something average to kill 90 minutes. Despite a respectable cast its a jobbie of a film.
 
i was disappointed with red lights too, i'm kind of glad i didn't see it in the cinema. it had a really good beginning, but the final act let it down. i usually really enjoy those sort of films, and i thought it was the perfect sort of role for cilian murphy but it just didn't deliver
 
Its funny because i remember seeing the trailers for it back when it was just about to be released and thinking to myself. Oh that looks like it might be pretty good. Thankfully i forgot all about it. Thrillers are generally my favourite genrre of film and the basic plot sounds really good and interesting. Especially when backed up with a good cast like that but it just didnt deliver at all.
