Done this thread on other forums and it's gone over quite well, and given both the level of activity and opinion here, I figure this should bring out some interesting discussion.

So anyway, what are some bands/artists that you find are

A: Overrated (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SHUT UP ABOUT THIS GROUP)
Now for this one; I'd like to at least hear why you think a band/artist is overrated. Go into some detail and don't just say "They're everywhere and they're unoriginal".

B: Deserving (They get the amount of recognition they deserve)
This may actually be a tricky one, as you'll have to balance personal like/dislike against what other people think.

C: Underrated (More people don't listen to this because...why?)
Don't just list bands you love in an effort to get other people to listen to them. Again; detail.

So to start off...

Overrated
  • Dragonforce. This one kind of pains me a bit as I've seen them twice now, but at the same time they seem to be worshiped as speed metal gods. They're good, but they're not quite that good IMO. Besides, when it comes to medieval-themed music; Blind Guardian has the quality area staked out and Rhapsody of Fire has the cheese market cornered.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AxCRho2gc8 - Storming the Burning Fields
  • Ozzy Osbourne. Love the guy's music, he's had a...bizarre life to say the least, but having listened to all of his stuff; even I'll admit he's gone downhill since 2001. There's no denying he was a huge influence, but I don't think he's carrying that particular banner anymore.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDhusQ2pZX8 - Trap Door

Deserving
  • Nightwish I actually used to file this under overrated because as much as I love the band, I do admit that sometimes people react to it as though it's the only female-fronted band out there. It's not, but I do at least consider it one of the better ones. That aside, the fanbase has mellowed considerably on all sides (case in point; I had Anette-era Nightwish filed under Underrated).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpL-LcPQAIU - Tenth Man Down
  • Queen. Princes of the Universe they were, and Princes of the Universe they shall remain. They've covered quite the range in rock (and I daresay pop in some areas) and still remain influential to this day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBUr1pSWTVI - Radio Gaga
  • Alice Cooper. Now this is how you pick a style and keep it going steady. His music's become a bit less "fun" and a tad more "sinister" as the years have gone by, but he hasn't lost that gritty-freak-in-the-alley style that he had all those years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCmBb1JSr4c -Might as Well be on Mars

Underrated
  • Weird Al Yankovic (Style Parodies) Now as a whole; I classify Al as "Deserving". He may not be the only parody artist out there, but he has taken it to another level. My reason for classifying his Style Parodies specifically as underrated is because almost everyone focuses on direct parodies such as White and Nerdy, Eat it, Ebay, and the like. They're great, but IMO his real genius is on songs like "Germs" (Nine Inch Nails), Young Dumb and Ugly (AC/DC), Genius in France (Frank Zappa), and You Make Me (Oingo Boingo)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ39cOnElEQ - Germs
  • Oingo Boingo. Because THIS is what Danny Elfman did before composing. Perhaps the best way to describe them is "Evil Devo". Their songs have a slightly creepy edge at times, and while people comment on Elfman's soundtrack stuff, very few people (that I've talked to anyway) seem to know what an amazing voice he has.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuxss1kBQWw - Private Life

So that's my input on a few anyway. I could probably go on for another dozen groups/artists, but let's see what you guys have for now :)

:hmmm: this sounds interesting. I'll give it a go.

Overrated:

Justin Bieber. Okay, the kid can sing, I'm not saying he can't, but it's the fact that he's everywhere you look and listen. It's just the hype surrounding him that annoys me and makes him over rated.

One Time

Lady Gaga- once again, she can sing, but she's just everywhere. I'm not into music that's overhyped. That and her songs just get stuck in my head, which for a lot of people that's good, but not me. :hmmm:

Bad Romance

Deserving:

30 Seconds To Mars- well, who didn't see this one coming from me? :andry: but seriously, Jared Leto's vocal range is amazing, from deep, gutteral lows to mindblowing, "a guy can reach that far?" highs. And plus, the put on one of the craziest live shows you've ever seen. They really know how to hype the crowd and get them involved, even going as far as to pull people from the audience onto the stage to sing with them. (I would know; I did that. :griin: )

Kings And Queens Live

I'm in this one. :D

Muse- They're just good. I just love their sound. It's a sound I've not really heard. No other reason for me, really.

Neutron Star Collision (Love is Forever)

Underrated:

Lifehouse- I love their songs. They just seem to convey emotion so well and concentrate it into music. I've just not seen them around a lot, so I think they deserve a bit more of a following.

Broken

Neon Trees- another great live act. The lead singer is charismatic and hilarious, they have a girl drummer, which is something I've not really seen, and their style is unique and hard to describe. I've never heard of them until my 30 Seconds To Mars concert, and now I'm a huge fan of them. xD

Animal

Overrated

30 Seconds To Mars - Just a bunch of mildly tallentet men who saw that the whole emo thing was taking of and just went to cash in on it. And millions of teenage girls fell for their evil scheme of depriving young and impressionable teens of good music. Jared Leto should get back on that front porch and wait till he drops.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UWTngz1u94

Green Day - bunch of hasbeen wannabe Punks who figured that going arena with somewhat critical lyrics was a good way to stop the decline of their popularity. And the gullible People and press fell for it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r00ikilDxW4

NOFX - Yeah, yeah Fat Mike is punk. insults bands cause they are christians, hates the conservatives and reads Noam Chomsky.
But he also is a poser, who found his political interst for a couple of years rallied against Bush and wondered when Punk Rock became so safe. Well it was all your fault douche.

Deserving

The Gaslight Anthem
- people can cry sell out all they want, they can accuse them of being to Springsteen, fact is The Gaslight Anthem are a great, honest dow to earth rock band. And they don't claim to be anything else. No sir these guys are real.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOBb13yDnzo

Bruce Springsteen - Great Storyteller, great musician and overall a great performer. Just look at his back catalog, that speaks for itself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTeBFmWsLIg

Underrated

Drive-By Truckers - For Years they've been putting out these incredible Rock/Alt Country records and until now nobody seemed to bother, its a shame. The Lyrics are fantastic, Cooley, hood and Isbel are fantastic singers and the whole thing is just a feast for every Rock fan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3icBcr1_Tw

Overrated:

Lady Gaga - No, she can't sing. Every time I hear one of her songs it sounds like someone recording someone talking over someone else scratching their nails on a chalkboard. It sounds terrible, her songs have no direction, and the only arguement going for her is that she's "catchy". By today's definition of "catchy" that isn't saying much. Seeing as how today's generation of "music enthusiasts" wouldn't know what good taste was even if it came up and bit them right in the ass.

Seriously, if music had a physical body, I'm pretty sure Lady Gaga's music would be the colon of the body. Pop in general, would be the ass.

Also: Paparazzi. Really? You fuckers actually listen to this shit? I can't sit through 10 seconds of that song without wanting to blow my brains out. This may sound quite assholeish of me, but anyone who actually admits to liking this trash cannot have their music taste taken seriously.

Muse - Very much overrated. Especially here in America. They're only big (in America) because of fucking Twilight. I've listened to them, they're not great, but they're not bad. All in all, I feel as if they're undeserving of their fame.

Linkin Park - Whiny Emo teenage angst galore here. Used in 90% of AMV ever made. Need I say more?

30 Seconds to Mars - While not awful, still pretty bad, and still thrust in my face in every direction.

Avenged Sevenfold - I'm glad the drummer died. Maybe now they'll stop making shitty music. However, I doubt I ever get that lucky. If I have to hear that shit song "Bat Country" one more time, I will fucking cut a bitch.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Deserving:

Queen - Write a song as good as "We Are the Champions" or "Bohemian Rhapsody" and then maybe I'll start liking your band.

Meatloaf - Fuck yes. Even though I can't sit down through a whole CD an not skip a song, I still find the majority of his music to be great. Bat out of Hell was genius, and I find that I listen to that song often.

Tool - Introduced to them about a year ago and never looked back. Their fanbase is great, not too big, not too small, and every album they release is solid gold.

Song: Hooker with a Penis

A Perfect Circle - One of the greatest bands I've ever heard, and also run by the front man of Tool, Maynard Keenan. How could I not love these guys? With songs like Judith, Imagine, Pet, 3 Libras, The Stranger, Hollow, and The Package, they're easily one of the greatest bands of our time, hands down.

Song - Judith

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Underrated:

Nightwish: They're fucking huge in other countries, but in America, practically unheard of. I'll admit that I thought they were done for when Tarja was booted, but they pulled through and came out with Dark Passion Play. A great fucking album that I can listen to from start to finish and not skip a track.

All of their songs with Tarja were great as well. Especially their album "Once".

Song: Poet and the Pendulum

E.S Posthumus - An instrumental band. Odds are you have heard their work before, but have never known it was them. Their new album entitled "Makara" is one of the best albums I've ever heard. Also, from their genre of music, even the most amateur of bands still sounds better than any bullshit from Lady Gaga.

Song: Unstoppable

Globus - A band I found recently. They've only released one album so far and I really love it. They're also an instrumental band, and they sound great. Chorus galore tied in with a wonderful symphony. I rather love them.

Song: Preliator

I am aware that my music tastes are not normal and that I have a very strong bias towards instrumental music, and music with an "epic sounding"... sound to them. (If that makes any sense at all to you.) I don't post here too much because I'm aware that I'm disgusted by most music today, and that I would probably flat out insult everyone's favorite band.

Anywho, here are some other underrated bands that you've probably never heard of (and a few you have):

Explosions in the Sky
Buckethead
E Nomine
Era
Helios
Kow Otani
Rhapsody of Fire
Scooter
Symphony X
The Flashbulb
Within Temptation
Hideki Naganuma
Scategoat Wax
Demetori

And that's just to name a few. I'm done here, I'm tired, and I got a good rant out of my system, so I'm happy now. :yay:

Overrated:

(I'm gonna get killed for this one) Led Zeppelin - I personally don't like this band. I find their overall style of music to be...well, boring. They put me to sleep. I find Robert Plant to be a rather irritating singer and Jimmy Page is an overhyped guitar player in my opinion. He's decent but there are WAY better, and I'm talking about during his era.

Bring Me the Horizon - This band actually make me want to vomit listening to them. The vocals are terrible and the instruments don't mix at all. I've only heard a few songs but thats more than I EVER wanted to hear.

Tool - I get it. Keenan, you like to talk about deep things. Great. But you can do it without coming off as pretentious. "Only the deep, truth seeking anarchists can see the meaning behind my music"...okay.

--------------------------------

Deserving:

Journey - I love this band to no end. I always feel uplifted when I listen to their music. It's amazing.

The Cure - Sure, they're kinda emo-ish. But they were the first, and to date, the only band that does it right. Atleast, they can sound happy most of the time.

Dream Theater - I talk about this band far too often but I don't care. They're are truly an epic band and are probably the best of the Progressive Metal genre.

-------------------------------

Underrated:

Dio - It's not often to talk to a random person and expect them to know the band. But they're great. Vivian Campbell is truly an overlooked guitar player.

Mr. Big - Almost no one I meet has heard anything from or even heard of this band. It almost makes me sad...Almost.

Redemption - I only recently got into this band and I already love them. They're great musicians.

Well, that's it for me. Let the negative repping begin.

Overrated: Foo Fighters. Not to say I don't like them, but they really aren't as great as everyone makes them out to be. Once you get past their big songs like Everlong, Best of You, The Pretender and so on there isn't really much worth mentioning.

30 Seconds To Mars. I liked The Kill, but all their songs are essentially just the same uninteresting bollocks. There isn't anything they've done that stands out as a brilliant contribution to music.

Deserving: Blur. The band of a generation, for me. Excellent song writing and very charismatic. They'll be remembered for a long time, and rightly so.

Oasis. Very much like Blur for me. Song writing is brilliant, and they gave electric live performances too. There aren't many bands who can sell out a venue like Wembley and make it a truly fantastic gig, but Oasis are one of the few who can.

Underrated: David Ford. Sort of down-beat and depressing stuff, but I really like his blues-y style. Some of his lyrics are top class.
When he plays live, he doesn't play with his backing band, but builds up all the music himself through layers and it gives his music a completely different dimension.

Jon Amor. Another one very like David Ford. His studio stuff isn't that great, but live he's brilliant.

The Heavy. They're starting to get a bit more recognition with their second album, which is a very good thing. They're soul/rock which is a really good combination.

Here's my list, which is a huge cross-section as there are innumerable bands who belong in each category:

Overrated:

Metallica :gonk: Maybe it's just personal preference, but I was extremely disgusted that they made it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame :mokken: There's nothing outstanding about their music, and their attitude of superiority makes them even less deserving of attention. IMO they did nothing to revolutionize music so they shouldn't be nearly as huge as they are.

Muse :mokken: No offense to anyone, but Kevin Griffin from Better Than Ezra has been singing with the same voice, in the same style, since the mid-90s; why aren't THEY popular if everyone loves that style of singing? I do honestly think being on the Twilight soundtrack has made Muse disproportionately popular; they are a decent band, but shouldn't be *the* main thing out there.

Colbie Caillat  Sorry to be blunt here, but I absolutely throw up every time I say her name. She is unbelievably mundane and atrocious. I had to sit through her set when she opened for the Goo Goo Dolls once and I swear she played the same chord over and over again for 40 minutes :rage: I could've done so many more fun things with that time, I would like it back please.

And, even though I do really like them, I'd also have to say Coldplay :mokken: They do have some very good music, but I could name probably twenty unknown bands with similar or better songs that deserved the ridiculous popularity Coldplay got just as much. For some strange reason they got singled out over one or two songs, and I really don't think they deserve to be selling out huge arenas if the other bands I'm thinking of don't get the same attention. They are good, don't get me wrong, just not *that* good.

Deserving:

Foo Fighters. Their music, for the most part (glares at "One by One" album) has been consistently awesome, and I have always held a tremendous amount of respect for Dave Grohl because of what happened with Nirvana. Some might say he used that fame to propel his own band into existence, but I think it takes a lot of guts to stick with something after going through that kind of experience; he could have just packed up and tried to forget about music altogether because of it, but he kept going, and I've always admired that.

U2. Another band who has had consistenly good music, and they've done it for even longer. What I love about them is that if you listen to their old music and their newer music, not much has changed (to me, anyway). And I think that really says a lot about the quality of their style and songwriting.

Incubus. They may not be quite as popular now as they used to be, but they absolutely deserve every ounce of fame that they've gotten. Their music is extraordinarily innovative and they sing about a wide variety of compelling subjects, love being the least of them. I've actually been motivated to take back control of my life in tight situations by listening to some of their songs, and I can say that about very few musicians. They're amazing songwriters and a very positive influence on the music scene in general.

Underrated:

Where do I begin? :ffs: Almost every band or musician on my IPOD, really. But here are a very, very small few of them:

Moke/John Hogg: This amazing band from London, Moke, did a tour back in the late 90s/early 00s that was earthshaking, lifechanging, you name the ing. John Hogg, the lead singer, can absolutely sing your face off, and their unusual rock/somewhat bluesy style is extremely refreshing to listen to. They have very intuitive lyrics and though the actual band is not together anymore, John Hogg is still doing solo performances and albums that are, quite tragically, going unnoticed :sad2:

Splender: Another awesome rock band from the 00s, every song is amazing and unique. They did enjoy a slight bit of fame with one of their singles, "Yeah, Whatever," but not nearly enough popularity came to them :sad3: The singer, Wayman Boone, has this great sarcastic-yet-sincere style of singing, it's a bit hard to explain but I've never heard anything like their vocals or lyrics.

Duncan Sheik: Everyone who only knows him by the song "Barely Breathing" is missing out on an incredible musician. He experiments with a variety of instruments and styles in his work, and his lyrics are unique and bold; he's not afraid to speak his mind about some of society's issues where a lot of other artists might be :hmmm: Everyone should definitely check him out, he's phenomenal.

Leona Naess :mokken: Every time someone listens to a Norah Jones song I get a gray hair, because they should actually be listening to Leona Naess, and it drives me absolutely f#!@ing up the wall. She does the same style of music as Norah, only it's about a hundred times better, and her lyrics are far more interesting. Though she's not my absolute *favorite* musician, I had to mention Leona because of the injustice of this.

And, the same goes for a local Florida band from the 2000's known as Super Model :sad2: This band's worst day sounded like OkGo's best day, they were far superior to internationally-known OkGo and they came around first. Unfortunately for the entire world, Super Model broke up a few years ago, over what the bassist explained to me in a poignant email were personal issues that started over difficulties with finances :sad3: Heartbreaking because if they'd been more successful, they might have stayed together and still would be playing kickass shows as we speak.

And the list goes on...

How many fucking emotional songs accompanied with just as emo-videos can these guys churn out? Not to mention knock-offs (ex., Shinedown, Daughtry)

Deserving:Muse/Deftones

Muse. Though they are used in the horrible monster that is Twilight Saga, they are pretty good. They have a unique sound.

Deftones. One word, awesome. Who doesn't love a band that makes music that you can turn the volume up to max and fall asleep to? (I.E., Bored)

Underrated:Matt&Kim/Switchfoot

Matt and Kim though sometimes their song Daylight can be played the hell out, are a very talented duo. Theys needz moar creditz.

Switchfoot. Ok, I think the main reason for them falling to the wayside is because of their religion. I get that. People don't like religion, whatever. But if one puts that aside, a lot of their songs have a dual meaning. For the believer as well as the non-believer.

Overrated

Basically all pop artists really. Every new pop artists randomly gets this extremely huge fanbase for reasons I really cannot explain. Pop artist like Gag who is just....ugh, and Justin Beiber need to go seriously cause they are no the only music that's out there. This is why I respect bands I listen to much more and I don't really think there are many overrated bands cause alot of rock/metal in general is looked over.

Deserving

Slipknot. They are metal gods. I love them to death! I mean come on! They can play both hard metal songs and soft songs while still maintaining their style. Not to mention how hard they've worked over the last decade to get to where they are now. I lot of people who are scared by their masks don't get to see how awesome these guys are at their music! Here are some of my faves:

Underrated

I listen to alot of underrated bands.

Vagina Panther- They rock. They aren't the best but they're better than some bands out there now. Here's a song.

Shiney Toy Guns- They really should be more popular. I love their songs so much!

HED PE- I really like this song. I haven't heard much of them but their songs sound pretty awesome

Overrated:
Queen- They play pop music, whilst Bohemian Rhapsody may be a good song, it's not as good as everyone thinks it is. Freddie Mercury is Queen, the only other guy from Queen that anyone can name without googling is Brian May, and that's because he has stupid hair.
U2- They were good once, but then they started playing stadium rock shit.
Foo Fighters - every song sounds the same.
Cold Play - I hate cold play, boring music. I heard they wanted to be Radiohead lite, they succeeded in being dull and just so nauseating pop. Yellow:rage: Vida la viva:rage:
Bon Jovi - Hair metal is crap, Bon Jovi are no exception.
The Rolling Stones - I like them a lot, a lot of their stuff is really good. However I don't think they made anything during and after the 80s really worth listening to.
Pearl Jam - No band got richer off being Alternative, Pearl Jam aren't alternative, they're slightly more alternative than mainstream rock music.
The Ramones - Bubblegum punk. They don't have the same attitude that the Sex Pistols have that makes them worth listening to, nor do they have anything to say either. They're important for the influence they've had on other superior bands, but I don't think they're very good.

Deserving:
Muse - I didn't like their most recent album, but BH&R was quite good and Origins of Symmetry is a very very good album indeed.

Overrated:
Queen- They play pop music, whilst Bohemian Rhapsody may be a good song, it's not as good as everyone thinks it is. Freddie Mercury is Queen, the only other guy from Queen that anyone can name without googling is Brian May, and that's because he has stupid hair.

I agree with you here, very good points. ALSO!

Overrated:

GreenDay: Why have they got a fooking RB game out also?? They are mega shit. Back with Warning and Insomniac, they were pretty decent. But the last couple albums have been emo trash. Load of bollocks.

Gaga: Now I have grown to like her music and herself, but Jesus. the hype is way OTT and is it really nessacary??

Words cannot express how much this kid is annoying. To me, he is too overrated. It's outrageous to see girls going gaga over him. "ZOMG, Justin Bieber is liek a hawtie!" And the things he sings about? Geez, it might be pre-teen and all this nonsense, but it's not going to get you very far in the industry now, is it?

Deserving

I've followed Leona Lewis since her first audition on X Factor in 2006 and the girl very much deserves everything. She's got an incredible voice and happens to be the first British female artist to top the U.S. charts in over twenty years. Her vocal range is inhuman. She's also very humble with anything good that comes her way. Plus, she's getting more confident in recent years since she used to be so shy when her career took off. Leona can also prove she can do a range of songs, including ballads, R&B and electropop. And it's lovely to see a variety there.

Underrated

These guys are amazing and I'm pleased with how far they've progressed in their short career so far. But people would think small British band, probably no good. Like Leona Lewis, I've been following them since they first burst into the industry with She's So Lovely. I can see them going pretty far with the right support.

Postin' a bit more to keep things fun here :)

First off; props to Sneakywaffle for the comment on Led Zeppelin. To be honest; I like their stuff, but it's not enough to make me go out and buy all their albums. I may not totally agree with you, but that is your opinion :)

Overrated:
Queen- They play pop music, whilst Bohemian Rhapsody may be a good song, it's not as good as everyone thinks it is. Freddie Mercury is Queen, the only other guy from Queen that anyone can name without googling is Brian May, and that's because he has stupid hair.
On this one, I'll have to say that my love of Queen isn't based so much around one particular song as it is the sheer variety of their songs and how different they sound. Compare the style/sound of Bohemian Rhapsody, and then line that up against Under Pressure, Innuendo, and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. It's all by the same band, but what Queen managed to do was vary their stuff. Some bits are rock (Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, I Want It All), while others certainly do have a pop-inspiring sound (It's a Kind of Magic, Don't Stop Me Now).

My overall point is that at least they were varied and didn't end up falling into a cookie cutter system with their songs (I'm looking at you; Def Leppard and Phil Collins-era Genesis).

As for Lady Gaga; musically she's catchy and a few of her songs can pack a surprising amount of detail depending on how far you read into it (Telephone Illuminati, lol). I think however, the big reason she's become so talked about is in major part due to how she dresses and acts in public. Without the comic book supervillain look, I doubt she'd have as much focus as she does.

Anyway to add a few more;

Overrated
  • KISS. They're good. They've done some good songs, and I like their music. At the same time however, everyone's going around crediting them with starting the whole "theatrical rock with makeup" bit, which to be blunt; they didn't.

  • Sonata Arctica. To be honest; they aren't much heard of in the States, but they're still one of the more entertaining bands out there. I like to think Tony Kakko isn't that great at writing english and the results of it are some of the stranger lyrics in the band's songs. Still, they're a lot of fun :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX9ibDCF6E8

Underrated
  • Blind Guardian. I debated whether or not to put these guys in Underrated or Deserving, but after talking with some people, it becomes apparent just how many immediately recognize Dragonforce, but hear "Blind Guardian" and don't have a clue. They've been around since '85 and hearing the way their music has changed over the years is really something. Not to mention they do some of the most ridiculously amazing covers.

The Beatles - Okay I know that a lot of people like them but they were really basically a boy band that played instruments. They couldn't sing all that well, their music was pretty good, but they aren't the greatest thing since sliced bread. You can disagree, but I don't think they are nearly as good as they're made out to be.

Under rated

Fleetwood Mac- VH1 putting them as like number 40 in their greatest artists ever is a huge insult. Fleetwood Mac are amazing. No one can play music quite the way they do. Watch The Dance and you're see what the Beatles are missing. Raw, powerful emotion behind their music. When I watch Stevie sing Silver Springs, she almost breaks down at the end, that's connection to your music, and that's dedication to your craft. Or Lindsey singing The Chain and the way his voice sounds so so strained and angry. I mean just amazing stuff.

I'll try not to just hate on Pop Music here.

Overrated:
Slipknot: Seriously? What are the redeeming features of this band nowadays? Iowa and the S/T album were fucking awesome, guttural and gritty, now what do we have? Shit like Duality. They're talented musicians, but they need to stop hiding behind this mask gimmick because without it, they'd be seen for what they are, mediocre musicians with nothing new to say. Joey Jordison is NOT an amazing drummer, he's mediocre at best. Check out what a jazz drummer can do with a minimal kit.

Korn: Same sort of comments as for Slipknot, they appeal to angsty teenagers, and that's all they should appeal to, yet I know adults who listen to this mallgoth shit.

Dizzee Rascal: Anyone in Britain knows of the annoying pandemic know as 'Dizzee Rascal' terrible lyricist with an annoying accent, the world would be better off without him.

Greenday: American Idiot seemed to bring them a whole new shitstorm of fans, undeserved. They are some of the most irritating, boring and downright banal bands out today.

JS Bach: In the classical world, this guy is apotheosised to the point where it's ridiculous. Yes, I like Bach. Yes, he was great. No, he wasn't the greatest composer ever, and no, I won't play him. Go away.

Also:
Muse, Radiohead, The Arctic Monkeys, Snow Patrol, My Chemical Romance, Linkin' Park, Bring Me The Horizon, Ke$ha, Whitney Houston, Jimi Hendrix, Nine Inch Nails.

Marilyn Manson: Manson deserves every bit of fame he gets, his music is provocative and extremely intelligent lyrically, when people blamed him for Columbine, he was highly eloquent in his responses to criticisms and put people like Bill O'Reilly in their places.

Johnny Cash: It's only right that one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century makes it onto here. Even people who dislike country tend to admit to enjoying Cash, his original writings are phenomenally done, with his distinctive sound and he had this ability to make any song that he touched better. Nine Inch Nails' 'Hurt' absolutely sucked. Cash made it a brilliant song. Neil Diamond's 'Solitary Man' was a brilliant song, Cash made it even better. HIM's cover of it sucked, however.

Iron Maiden: Assisting in the bringing about of an entirely new genre is always good. Their songs are well written with some interesting lyrical subjects and very talented instrumentalists.

Lady Gaga: Not only are her songs catchy, she also seems to be quite the philanthropist, and knowing that a musician you like is a good person is always a nice thing to know, isn't it? She's also a very interesting visual artist.

Tool: Sophisticated songwriting and very deep lyrics. I love Tool. Can't say the same for Keenan's other projects.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Most famous classical musician ever? Quite possibly. He deserves it. In my opinion the most talented composer of all time (not my favourite mind you), able to compose some of the most beautiful symphonies while stone deaf. His melodies punctuate much of modern culture such as his famous 'Moonlight Sonata' being used in video games like Resident Evil or films such as Misery or Fur Elise being butchered by every amateur pianist ever, his music has become so a part of our culture and has influenced so much that it is only right he makes it into this section.

Also: Black Sabbath, Madonna, Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, Frédéric Chopin, W. A. Mozart, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan.

Underrated:

Burzum: In the metal world, this guy is probably the most famous black metaller out there, yet his music never really pushed out into the mainstream because of its extreme sound. Yet there is much to be found in Burzum, anger, yes, but also, a profound beauty in many songs as well as an overarching feeling of deep melancholy and ponderousness. Tracks I recommend: Dunkelheit, Rundgang um die Transzendentale Saule de Singularitat, Jeg Faller, Det Some Engang Var, Ea Lord of the Depths.

Agalloch: Gaining popularity in the metal community but deserving of far more repute than they have. A progressive, ambient, black doom metal band, they rarely have a song shorter than 6 minutes, spanning up to 20 minute epics. Their music is highly evocative and should really be experienced by as many people as possible. I couldn't recommend this band enough. Tracks I recommend: She Painted Fire Across The Skyline Part 1, 2 and 3, Kneel To The Cross, In The Shadow of Our Pale Companion.

Cee Lo Green: I know he's fairly famous and popular, but he's still under appreciated compared to utter shit like Enrique Iglesias. His voice is so distinctive and his songs are fun to listen to.

Immortal Technique: Yes, I love Immortal Technique, his lyrics are fantastic to listen to, if sometimes a little off. Tracks I recommend: The Cause of Death, Point of No Return, Dance With The Devil.

Scroobius Pip: Fairly unknown outside of England. In fact, fairly unknown all over; he's got some fantastic things to say and I'd reccomend anyone who likes rap, spoken word poetry or just music in general to check him out. Tracks I recommend: Get Better, Thou Shalt Always Kill, Great Britain, Snob.

Also: Darkthrone, Deicide, Sunn O))), Khanate, Vintersorg, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Haggard.

NOTE: All the songs I mention are easily found on Youtube. Go have a look :D

Overrated: Most rap, pop, techno and all of that rubbish. I could make better DnB on that old ps1 music maker game.

More specifically though and sticking to more of what I just think 'WHY do people like these guys' I've got to say Green Day, All American Rejects, the bands that get all the air time.

Marilyn Manson is far too overrated, I'm not saying I don't like his stuff but....if I had to stack him up next to bands that are a lot better but a lot less known about, it just doesn't make sense how he gets so much.

Deserving: Being a metal fan these may not ring any bells for some but here goes it.

Devildriver because they've made consistently good albums
Avenged Sevenfold because, ok the music's slipped lately, but you've got to give them the kudos for carrying on after losing a band member.
Same goes for Slipknot. Yes they're overhyped but still.
Apocalyptica, regardless of what any magazine feels or says about them being a one trick pony, they're doing something different in a genre which, lets face it, is flooded with carbon copy bands.

Underrated: Oh what a huge list. Parkway Drive, Hail The Villain, Heaven Shall Burn, The Human Abstract, Stick To Your Guns, and many more. These guys do it and they do it well, but the coverage always goes to the bigger bands who half the time are worse.

These are only a few, but there are many many more but as I have a headache and have just finished work. I feel I'll leave the categories as is for now. XD

O-land.
Hate her voice. Hate her stupid lyrics. Hate her stupid videos. I just dislike her so so very very much as a musical artist. :hmph:

30 Seconds to mars.
As much as I love their first album and a bit of their second, 30STM is just way too over rated. They're all really great muscians though, I mean, great drumming, great vocals, great lyrics. But... they try to be "epic" way too much. And it sucks, cuz they have a lot of potential. I still love 'em, but I can admit they're way overrated.

Cage the Elephant
Such a great rock band with a classic rock sole in their music. They're just really great. They show me that hope for the good ol' classic sounding music is possible in our day after all. They're themselves and they rock.

Ke$ha.
She writes her lyrics, and even though her released tracks are about parties or being who you are. The rest of her music is either hilarious or has really sad meanings behind them.

Britney Spears.
Queen of pop. End of story.

Blink 182
They're Blink. They're epic. And they're amazing. I still love listening to them. :ryan:

The Black Keys
They're such a great band. I know they have a fanbase, but they need WAY more airplay than they ever get(which is none).

CheVelle
One of the best bands I've ever listened too. They don't get much airplay either, sadly. Which sucks. Cuz they're really amazing.

Tori Amos
She has been around for SO long, it's sad she never gets played on channels or radio stations. She's so talented. She writes her lyrics and plays the piano. Not just any lyrics either, they're always about something unique and deep.

Tool
They're huge, I know. But they don't get enough love from radio stations or music channels. Which stinks, cuz(once again)they're freaking amazing. I mean, I feel bad for the people that don't hear/listen to Tool at least once in their lives.

Silversun Pickups
I love this band so much :gonk: I personally compare them to something like Fleetwood Mac, but that's just me xD I know they get some airplay but not nearly as much as they should be getting.

Band of Skulls
Nuff said. They're just so amazing :gonk:
