Toriyama: Lightning Returns will be the most "complete and polished game in the Final Fantasy series

Well I say time will tell but to be honest I think they now know that their games have to be as best as they can be cause as of late they have been lacklustre to some people or should I say many many people. In my opinion I feel this one may well be the most polished, it is an world driven game which needs to be polished greatly because if it isn't it won't work properly or give the desired immersion they want to show to us.

So I do and slightly don't believe them but I am going to go with my gut instinct and say they will shock us and do extremely well...somehow...:D

The thing is that this game its something new for SE so they dont really have experience with this kind of gameplay they are comming to, maybe with help of the KH team but the FNC team cant seem to get things right but well they might surprise us maybe this "world Driven" concept is ES thing, only time will tell but im skecptical.

I don't believe this at all, unfortunately. It's really hard to put any trust in SE nowadays.

Though that is not to say I am not looking forward to the game. I believe it will turn out quite decent, but most definitely not as good as the older FFs. The story of LR:FFXIII will most likely be another huge mess anyway. Even experienced storytellers may not be able to salvage that stupid ending in XIII-2.

I would say "I'll believe it when I see it" but, since I know I won't see it, there seems little reason to say that. This is just another one of his sad attempts to entice the fanbase back...didn't work with XIII-2, sure as hell isn't going to work with what is essentially XIII-3. To his mind "polished" means "pretty visuals" and visuals were never the problem with the games...it was everything else. Not only that, but even IF this claim was true, in another universe where we achieved world peace and got every nation to disarm, the economy was brought back from the brink of annihilation by Mitt Romney, and where Versus XIII was released last year and was a rousing success and a remake of FFVII was on the way next year, good luck getting people to actually agree with that.

Also, whilst I'm at it, I don't see how a sequel game can be more complete than a standalone game. I mean, how can it be any more complete than FFI, II, III, V, VI, VIII or IX, which have no sequels and are perfectly contained stories by themselves? Even those games with sequels - IV, VII and XII - you can play by themselves and get a story out of it...even XIII you can play by itself and get a pretty definite conclusion. So how can a game that is dependent on prior knowledge of two games be more complete? If you played it without playing the other two (hell, given how awful they are, even if you played it WITH them) you wouldn't have a clue what the fuck was going on! That makes no sense, Toriyama. You can't have a sequel that is more complete than a standalone game which is complete by itself, which you can play without needing any prior knowledge of the world and terminology, etc. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.

It might complete the whole "saga" they've got going, which really shouldn't have gone past the first game, but there is no way in any reality that, by itself, it will be a complete game, and it sure as hell won't be more complete than a game that doesn't have or need a sequel. Honestly. Sentences your learn structure to properly, Toriyama, and words understand mean learn to actually. Headache giving you're a me.

In short? Nothing Motomu Toriyama says can be taken seriously. Nothing to see here, people, just another stupid claim from the worst thing to happen to video gaming since Nintendo discovered that Mario could sell anything. Move along.

...on a minor note, shouldn't this be in Square Enix news? Or was it put here in the hopes that us SE News regulars wouldn't notice it and thus it would avoid the metaphorical shitstorm that many SE News threads involving Lightning suffer from? :wacky:

Princess Happy couldnt have said it better.

This is the boldest and most retarded remark I have ever heard from Toriyama. Sequel can never be complete lol. I hoped he meant the most polished/complete among FFXIII series, but overall FF series nah thats BS.

It should be a standalone game to have tht opportunity. Also how many years to produce and be released FFXIII LR? About 2 years same like FFXIII-2.

 You are a fucking troll Toriyama.

I can see peoples constant negativity to the FFXIII series and I can see what Princess Happy has said. But a part of me actually wants this statement to be true so that it comes back to bite all of your negative asses haha (I joke) But then will that happen I doubt it but wouldn't it be nice if it they were right for a change. Besides this is the last we will see of the FFXIII series besides that of Versus, so now this shit storm can finally be put aside and used at the next major instalment of Final Fantasy.

Last time i checked FF was a RPG genre so if even LR succeeds it doesnt change the fact that LR is not a proper RPG so its retarded to compare it with the other proper FF games, good game could be but not a good FF game.

Even if this game was good, I don't see how the statement that it will be the "most complete" FF game when you have FF games that are complete by themselves could be true, unless this is a standalone title not related to the previous two games which, it is clear to see, it is not. You can have a complete sequel, as a game, but as a story that sequel is dependent on the original. This game is not dependent on one game, but two. It is hardly complete by itself.

I think there is little doubt this game will be the most polished, at least graphically: FF games are always prettier with each new game, it's to be expected. Gameplay wise, there is insufficient information to tell, but given the track record of this series, it's doubtful. Maybe in comparison to the previous two games - after all, XIII-2 did fix some aggravating bugs in the battle system - but in comparison to the WHOLE Final Fantasy series? Given that it's a subjective topic, that can never be anything more than Toriyama's own personal view, and it's credibility is less than even Wikipedia's.

Also, criticism =/= negativity. Being critical does not equate to being negative, just as being negative does not equate to being critical. I am not being negative, and anyone who thinks otherwise is either deliberately misunderstanding my points, not bothering to read them, or being a troll. Just saying.

I think you mean "traditional JRPG" and not "proper RPG" specifically.

If you want to be absolutely picky about it, the only "proper" Final Fantasy games are those that have a turn-based battle system, because that is how RPGs started. The ATB system is not how RPGs started, so therefore any FF game with an ATB system is not a "proper" RPG, by your reasoning, which is clearly that "proper" FF games are those that adhere to the same sort of system as the older titles. Well, the older titles people generally think of - the PS1 generation, and the later SNES games - are actually the second generation, so they aren't "proper" FF games either by that reasoning. Although amusing, FFX IS a proper FF game by that reasoning, since it had a strictly turn-based battle system...but I digress

The XIII series is more like a Western RPG than a JRPG, which does make it difficult to compare it to past FF titles (although it is hardly "retarded" to do so) but it can still lay some claim to the genre of RPG, because what makes up an RPG has become extremely subjective, as role playing elements have been incorporated into a variety of genres: you have the likes of Borderlands and Mass Effect flirting with the idea of adding skill and point systems - things traditionally the province of RPGs - into shooters and calling it a "shooter RPG" and the likes of Skyrim blending the open world gameplay you might expect of an action/adventure game with RPG elements. Outside of personal opinion, the idea of a "proper RPG" no longer exists.

I would agree that the FFXIII series are not traditional JRPGs, because it deviates massively from the prescribed formula, and adds in a crapton of things you would not expect to see in such games - such as linear maps and quick-time sequences - but that it isn't a proper RPG? Much as I dislike the games, I cannot agree with that.

Actually no, I shouldn't be so quick to laugh. Of course the man is going to use hyperbole and proclaim his latest project to be the greatest thing ever or whatever. We all like to use hyperbole if it impresses gullible people and if it inflates our ego by tenfold. Unfortunately, while we can get away with it without being so scrutinised, Toriyama is just asking to be ridiculed online. I'm pretty sure he's done similar things with FFXIII several years back, and likewise he would have called FFXIII-2 an improvement on its predecessor in every single, possible way. When he isn't being hyperbolic, I suspect he's cuddling up to his giant Lightning cushion and humping it.

Come on, Toriyama. Tell me how polished and complete this game can possibly be when it's going to have a shorter development time than even FFXIII-2. And look what FFXIII-2 essentially was: a game that relied on unused and recycled assets, while for LR they apparently promised us it would be different; they are supposedly making totally new assets from scratch to build this new world of theirs. Seriously, I would love to see how they manage all this in time for the game's pencilled-in 2013 release date. Unless the whole of Tri-Ace and in extension, Tri-Crescendo have been annexed into the company to help work on the project, how polished can this be?

And what do we mean by "polished"? Graphically? You can make the prettiest game with the most intricate of designs and sparkly things like FFXIII, but it's no good if the game is just soulless from beginning to end. I suppose one thing I can totally credit FFXIII for is the fact that Square-Enix have been meticulous in ironing out the bugs and glitches that Bethesda would have simply not have fucking cared about. Even if FFXIII was turd, at least I can say it was a
very meticulously polished turd.

If by most "complete and polished game in the series", they mean an eerily alien-like, pretty Lightning render model in a game full of gorgeous graphics, then yes, I suppose that is somewhat plausible. Except for the fact that FFXIII-2 supposedly has graphical issues, which doesn't bode too well when the next game has a shorter development time still. LR can strive to be the most "complete and polished" of the trilogy, as that is its most realistic goal, but the most "complete and polished" of the franchise? I don't even think it can out-pretty FFXIII's beautiful hollow shell. Anything else, it's pretty much got no chance, because games like FFVI, FFIX and FFX are considered as polished as Final Fantasy games as you can get.

Look...i can understand if he had said "this is the most polished and complete game in the Final Fantasy XIII series" but he didn't say that. he said "final fantasy series". as in out of every final fantasy in history, this one is the most polished and most complete is goign to be Lightning Returns. And frankly, that's a load of bull crap.

EDIT: Is it me, or does it sound like Toriyama is on a high horse every single time he talks about Final Fantasy XIII?

Considering the fact that the man has NO Final Fantasy credentials outside of XIII, I would say that he is on one. Sure, part of that is Wada's insistence of beating Final Fantasy XIII to death, but the man has absolutely no right to go and compare what amounts to shovelware to some of the greatest games in the Final Fantasy franchise. If it was Kitase, then he might have more of a case, but this clown? No sir.

That and Xii revenant wings. But i agree

Overall, you have to look at the Japanese WORK culture. Here is an extract from Wikipedia(some of you may call it a bad source, but I am going to ignore you for the sake of argument):

Wikipedia said:
Surveys indicate continued preference for bosses who are demanding but show concern for workers' private lives over less-demanding bosses interested only in performance on the job. This system rewards behavior demonstrating identification with the team effort, indicated by singing the company song, not taking all of one's vacation days, and sharing credit for accomplishments with the work group.

As you can see, in the Japanese culture, they encourage people to work, some to the point of near collapse. Case in point, Capcom's Yoshinori Ono. He got all stressed out promoting Street Fighter x Tekken that he spent a few days in the hospital for stress. Thankfully, Namco's counterpart, Katsuhiro Harada, says that Namco forces him to take days off after projects.

The point to all of this is that the quality of Final Fantasy has gone down since the departure of staff members due to overwork. With Toriyama calling what essentially amounts to XIII-3 the greatest Final Fantasy ever is just insulting their work... Overwork actually, and the series roots.

He put the series on the misery and he thinks he can restore so lets hope this game can fill SE ego because if this fail i bet they would make a FFXIII-4 and i wouldnt want that.

SE's infatuation with Lightning is unhealthy and them being the perfectionists they are they keep pounding out these games because of all the negative feedback. When are they going to realize that we don't want another recycled version of the fail that was 13 but instead want something new so our faith can be revived. Do they really believe people who hated 13 are going to pay money for game where the lead character returns? Whoever is running SE must have a business degree from some hole in the wall in japan or something because this is fail business.

It's not that. SE is a Japanese company. Naturally they are going to appeal to the Japanese base to earn their bucks as opposed to a globalist approach like Capcom, and it shows in their game design.

If we isolate Japan from the rest of the world, they might legitimately claim that Final Fantasy XIII was a success.

Thing is that this is the only game that focused style over substance. The story constantky changes and i doubt any ff XIII fan can say they fully understand the world of ff13. Hopefully this is the end. We need versus and we need type-0 localization

That is all well and good but SE has been a staple in the global gaming industry for years so if they are just so willing to throw the western market away it makes me wonder what kind of brain disorder is running the company.

I don't doubt SE will put some real, hard effort to LR (if you disagree then just watch the presentation on youtube...you've at least got to give them credit for all the concept work they've put in already) but I have to admit I'm skeptical that this will be the most polished FF ever. I like XIII and I like XIII-2, but LR is not going to have the same development period as those two games, and it is going to be designed very differently. Some assets will be reused I am sure, but with how different it's going to be, I can't imagine too many making it in without serious modification or a total remake.

If I had to name one FF game that I thought stood out as being the most polished and complete/rounded out, it would be XII. That game was, potentailly, 150+ hours long. LR is going to compete with that? No, we already know that it's going to be a game limited by time. I guess we'll see how well-rounded out an FF game can be with only 30 hours to tell the story.
