I was just wondering if it's compulsory to have smoke alarms installed in your home, in whatever part of the world you may be?
Here in Australia...well in the state of Queensland at least it is compulsory to have smoke alarms installed and apparently there is a maximum fine of $750 if you don't have any installed.
But as they say, the real penalty may be someone's life if you don't have one.
If you don't have a fire alarm fitted and a fire occurs legal action is taken against you.
Just been thinking about this today because we have a guy coming out to check up on them today. Make sure they're working and such. I've already tested them and they beep...but I don't know what else he needs to do. >.<

You must have one on every level if you're in a highset house as well.As the new owner of a house, if there are no smoke alarms installed when you take ownership of the property you will be required to fit smoke alarms within 12 months otherwise you will be in breach of the regulations.
