I was just wondering if it's compulsory to have smoke alarms installed in your home, in whatever part of the world you may be?

Here in Australia...well in the state of Queensland at least it is compulsory to have smoke alarms installed and apparently there is a maximum fine of $750 if you don't have any installed.

But as they say, the real penalty may be someone's life if you don't have one.

If you don't have a fire alarm fitted and a fire occurs legal action is taken against you.

As the new owner of a house, if there are no smoke alarms installed when you take ownership of the property you will be required to fit smoke alarms within 12 months otherwise you will be in breach of the regulations.
You must have one on every level if you're in a highset house as well.

Just been thinking about this today because we have a guy coming out to check up on them today. Make sure they're working and such. I've already tested them and they beep...but I don't know what else he needs to do. >.<

Discuss.

I'm not sure if it's "compulsory" in the UK, but it is highly encouraged. I know you can get them installed for free, if you don't have any though. We used to get lectures every year from the fire brigade at school on the importance of smoke alarms and testing them regularly.

As for me, we should have a smoke alarm in every room, although only about 4 of them are working at the moment :gasp:

Nah you do not have to have one here but it is essential to survive. Once I remeber there was a huge fire on the house in front of mine and they had no smoke alarms. Luckily they were not home. But there house burned down with them watching :gasp: As for my house we have 5 installed. 4 are working atm.

I think it's compulsory here in the US but I'm not positive. They do make a big deal about it at least.

I know when I was living with my mom we always had smoke detectors in our homes. They were rented though so it was probably a requirement. They only worked until the battery died and then no one ever replaced them. Probably not good in retrospect.

I have a smoke detector in my apartment now and I'm supposed to test it once a month but I don't. :hmmm: I test it every now and then though and it still works fine.

Australia is odd like that, they fine you for not voting and for not having smoke alarms.
I know we have one in the house because I set if off when I left the fire door open, I'm fairly sure we have more than one though. We never test them so they may not work if there is a fire and then I shall die. That being said, I do think it's fairly unlikely that a fire will just start by itself.

They are compulsory in rented properties here, not sure about privately owned mind. I had a dude checking mine recently, knowing fine well the fuckers work because my shower sets the one upstairs off :hmph:Yet, my kitchen was full of smoke the other day and the damn downstairs one didnt so much as make a peep.... but yeah, goingoff topic noo

I know my mother has never had hers checked, hers hasnt worked for yonks.... so I guess it's not compulsory unless you're a landlord...actually, Im not even 100% on that... :hmmm:

I dont see why you wouldnt have one in your home. I mean for what they cost and what they can actually help prevent it just seems daft to me not to have a couple in your home.
Mines goes off at the lsightest thing though. When im frying bacon the smoke from the kitchen is enough to set it off.

We've got one in every room in our house. They don't work though, because we've burned/set fire to loads of things and had nothing happen. They do go off if you spray an aerosol too close to them though, which is how our landlord tests them.

At my parent's, we have two and I know they work quite well, because one is right outside the kitchen door and I always leave it open when something is cooking and set it off.

we have one in our place but its not tha good! It goes off all the time when we are cookin in the kitchen and makes a hell off a noise!!

Thats probadly what you would call a good fire alarm :lew:
Rather that than have it going off when half your house is burnt down xD

Odd. i live in Australia (NSW) but we dont have a fire alarm. Hm.... In any case, about the point in getting fined for not voting, its to ensure that we really do get what the majority wants. Granted that many people votes are crappy donkey votes, but most vote properly.

Ive got on e at my place but as Guado says it a can go off if you are crap at cooking.....like me. So it only goes on when l'm asleep.....it makes me dizzy to the point of falling over so l pissed it off!
