School Fads

I can recall the first fad in school being dinosaurs. We all had this HUGE dinosaur craze, where we'd dig up the sandpit pretending we'd found fossils. We all used to compete for the right to be a particular Power Ranger, as well :wacky:

Like pretty much everyone, I remember Pokemon cards...those were fairly big, although once they got confiscated, the hype kinda died down. I can remember some of us brought them into school anyway, got caught, and then our teacher stuck them all in his drawer...in one big pile. It took us well over an hour to sort them out afterwards...not pleased :hmph:

We went through stages of sorts at my school, according to what was on CITV at the time. After the Orange Islands season of Pokemon, Digimon started being shown, so we were all into that pretty much instantly. Then it was Cardcaptors afterwards, in year 7. Everyone got into Yu-Gi-Oh! after that, but since that was aired on Sky, I didn't get to watch it, so I didn't get into that until much later. After that, that was pretty much it for fads.

Everyone has reminded me of more Fads that we went through at school

Tamagotchi! These were really popular at school, I remember my mum wouldn't let me have one for some reason so I was always left out while the kids would play with and feed their virtual pets :sad3: I used to borrow my friends every now and then though  Not long ago I went and bought myself a tamagotchi because I felt ripped off not having one as a child...I played with it for a small amount of time and got very bored. It now sits on my desk at home dead and alone.

Beyblades. Those ones you got in the chip packets. Man I loved these things, I am not sure how I forgot to mention them in my first post :rage: I collected so many, I had heaps of the rare gold ones too. I was obsessed, mostly because I was a crazed beyblade anime lover. Unfortunately I was never any good at actually playing the game with the things and never really bothered to, I'd just swap them with the other kids.

Pogs. We had pogs too, though the craze started and ended back when I was very very young, like 5 or 6. I remember I had a little folder of the looney tunes themed pogs, I wonder what happened to it :hmmm:

oh lord.

Pokemon Cards: The most famous one of all. EVERYONE has them. (Me..not so much. prefered the games) They were/are not banned. People traded them off and TONS of stuff. no one actually played the game though.

Tamagotchis: I have a necklace thingy with 12 of these things on it. i LOVED THEM. everyone had them. It was amazing.

These weird cube thingys: They were virtual people inside a cube. It was rathe rpopular. and addicting.

Marbles: i had a Giant tin full of them. i had TONs of rare ones too.
i Tried getting into it but i couldn't so i remembered giving them all away.

Silly bandz: those weird little animal bands? It went WILD. everyone had them.

Cat's Cradle String tricks back home in the Philippines. I was 5 or 6 when I learned how to do it with my cousins. I still know how to do it, but it's rare to find another player that knows how to play as well. I'd have to learn how to play alone :hmmm:

Here's a video as an example (similar enough).

Tamagochis in my middle school. I remember I got it for Christmas one year, not knowing what it was. But I was addicted to them. I'd bring mine to school everyday...though I don't remember when I stopped playing with them.

Yo-yo's. Quite surprisingly, I actually learned how to do a few tricks.

Finger-skateboard stunts. I watched the boys at my middle school play this. My brother was so crazy about them.

Marvel cards. My brother and I collected them throughout our elementary school-years. =]

Marbles and rubber bands - back home, my brother and I also collected a bunch of these and would "battle" other kids in town. Winners get to take the losers' marbles/rubber bands, etc. Out of the bunch... marbles, rubber bands, and cat's cradle were the most memorable fads for me.

This is just going to show how old I am but here goes...:wacky:

When I was in school one of the big fads was slap bracelets. They were these bracelets that were slapped on your wrist and then they take the form of a bracelet. You could get them in loads of colors and the more you wore the cooler you were. I was never incredibly fond of them...people would "slap" me with their brand new bracelets and the new ones really hurt when you put them on :(

Here's what they were for those of you who have no clue what I'm talking about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slap_bracelet

These were pretty big too:

I never wore those though because they were cheap plastic, itchy, and they stunk :damon: ...I could never keep them on my wrist either. I can only buy charm bracelets or custom bracelets because my wrists are so small :(

Back in elementary I started with pokemon cards but I never knew how to play! All I did was collect and steal them! xD Boy I stole every card I had since I had no money and I had a large deck. I eventually gave my deck away though since I never played anyway.

The second fad I got into was bayblade. I was given a "strong" bayblade from some older kid and it was fun "dueling" with the spinny tops but I got bored later and lost my toy thing.

The last fad I really got into was Yugioh. I was a master at card stealing so from going through coats and "looking" at decks I got alot of good cards. Sadly and ironically a bunch of my cards got stolen. Eventually in middle school I got a zombie deck and crushed people with it. Then cards started being banned and the show yugiohgx was created so I quit.

After that I quit fads. I realised I only had fun for a little while and then got bored with em quickly.

Ah yes, I can easily remember Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in Year 7, there was constantly a game during recess, lunch and sometimes during class time. Until Yu-Gi-Oh! cards were banned at our school because some nerds were trying to sell fake Ancient Egyptian Cards for $50 each. It wasn't until when I reached Year 11 when we bought Yu-Gi-Oh! cards back again.:P

There was also yo-yo's, but it didn't last too long.

Not game card related or anything but there were a few other types of fads that went on in our highschool for a while.

I used to catch the bus home and there was this stupid game between the boys in which they would slap each others hands as hard as they could until the other couldn't take it anymore and whoever lasted until the end won the game. Stupid game but it carried on for a good two years. 0_o

Then there was the year 12 boys hooking up with year 8 girls. I don't know why they all thought it was cool, but just about every girl in year 8 went out with a year 12 boy at one stage. The fascination with that died off after a while, though some continued to do it. I swear Catholic private schools are worse than public schools! Wish I'd never gone to one. <_<

The same thing happened when I was in primary school. I remember all the year 7 girls going out with year 5 boys. It was so so wrong!!!

Oh and those coloured bracelet bands that girls used to wear in primary school. Each had a different meaning, like, the black one meant sex, blue one meant pash or something. If a guy broke one of them he had to do whatever that one meant. Mos of the girls actually got the blue bands from the inside of the coke bottle lids. There's a blue seal in the cap that stops the coke from leaking out. They would cut out the middle and stretch the outside part of it to become a bracelet. v_v

:ffs: Le sigh...

Pokemon cards. Those evil cards were so annoying! I tried to like it, I even have a mini collection of cards, I just..... No.

Another "fad" was trading video games. I remember one time, I gave away all my Gameboy games (about 20 games) for a pretty bad Star Wars game on Gamecube. Boy, my parents were peeved at me! Luckily I was able to get them all back.

Luckily that's over for us. I wonder what the new "fad" is.

I was a 90's child. Lunch boxes, hermit crabs, the original Pokemon, Tech Decks, Super Nintendo, *the Macarena*..
Oh yes, being a 90's child was great. I don't what's up with this new generation though.

conkers was never a fad, it was a yearly ritual. soon as september rolled round we wathced those conker trees like hawks

yo-yos and those candy necklace things made a brief appearance, oh, as did tamagotchis. Pogs and tazos

cant remember anything else, missed the whole pokemon card thing, that was my brothers era, i was all growed up by then
