I am looking for suggestions for awesome RPG games, preferably turned based stradegy games. I have played all of the Final Fantasy games so no need to tell me to play any of those. I have played all of the kingdom of hearts games. I know WoW and online games. I will also note that I have played legend of the dragoon.

I am looking for something kind of like Final Fantasy for the Playstation 3 system, or the nintendo DS. This is not to say it can't include ps1 or ps2 games.

So does anyone know any awesome games they could point me towards? I played Xenosaga at one time but found it very boring.... maybe its because I only played an hour into it... not sure though.

[Moved to Rocket Town]

I only know some PS1 games that are like that. Grandia being one of them, I didn't play much of it, but it seemed fun. The other is Wild ARMS, a western style game.

Well if you want some good rather old-school RPGs that have a FF flavor and very few bad calories, try Shadow Hearts 1 and 2 (ignore 3) and Persona 3 and especially 4. Satisfaction guaranteed. Also, Wild ARMS 4 ain't bad at all.

Arc the Lad was for PS2 though, good game diff and confusing story wise you will wonder
"the hell" but it does make sense eventually :ryan:.

The only suggestion you need is White Knight Chronicles 2, 1000 hours of pure gameplay if you are good enough and have the interest, Weapons, Knights, combat all top notch, give a go Roland.

A few games stand out for me: Grandia 3 and Valkyrie Profile 2. Both games have turn-based elements, but G3 is a bit more turn based then VP2. Though, they are great RPGS nonetheless, and that is what you are looking for, afterall.

My personal opinion is to go with VP2 because it has like...over 100 hours of gameplay, methinks. :hmmm:

Anywhoo, g'luck with your decision. :dave:

Guess I'll put my input down in writing. xD

In my opinion, your best bet for a PS3 RPG is Resonance of Fate. The battle system is unique, the steampunk setting is fantastic, it looks better than FFXIII (at least, it does in my opinion, if you care about that sort of thing, I know that more detail was put into Leanne's hair than anything in FFXIII) and, most importantly, it's bloody hard. Seriously, this game will challenge you. You will lose a lot. But it'll feel extremely rewarding when you manage to plan your moves out so that you come out on top. Story-wise it leaves a bit to be desired, but there is some real chemistry between the characters, and it's a very enjoyable and often amusing game. That'd be my top recommendation for you. I wrote a detailed review if you want a blow-by-blow of the battle system and everything else :awesome:

White Knight Chronicles II comes with a remastered version of the original, so get that one if you're considering it. But...I'm not sure I'd recommend it, and I definetely wouldn't say get it over Resonance of Fate. The gameplay is a lot like FFXII, making it fantastic, only...the story is utter bollocks. Seriously, this game has little-to-no story whatsoever, and the second game isn't much better. The cast is likeable enough I suppose, but you'll be left wondering why you're chasing after the princess for the hundreth time in the first, and the second you're just sent all over the place for no adequately explored reason with this godawful confusing time-travelling book...thing. Multiplayer is a drag. It takes a very, VERY long time (unless you have someone willing to grind high-payout quests with you) to get anywhere or do anything worth doing. If you don't have anyone to do that, you'll quickly lose patience, because it's boring as hell.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope International is, in my opinion, an excellent game. It's easily one of the hardest games on the PS3 to Platinum, so if you were going for that, you'll be playing the game for about 450 hours, at least three times over. It will last if you're a completionist. The story is alright, although it has that Star Ocean flaw of dumping a shit-ton of sci-fi jargon on you towards the end, and the cast are hit-and-miss (some people don't mind them, others can't stand them, it depends on your tolerance for anime-esque characters) and it's a fairly long game. It DOES boast the best real-time battle system you'll find anywhere, though. If you like real-time battles, Star Ocean is definetely for you. It isn't much like FF, though...if it was, I wouldn't be nearly so nice to it. xD

Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria is a good option as well, and the closest thing to Resonance of Fate I can think of, since it was made by the same developers and has that semi turn-based battle system that adds a dimension of tactical movement to the gameplay, since it's entirely possible to kill enemies before they get a chance to hit you...if you're good enough to position yourself in the right area, anyway. VP2 has an excellent storyline and cast, amazing graphics for a PS2 game, and is quite addicting...but it's quite short. It has a setting you might like, and the Norse mythology thing is pretty unique.

Will add in more as I think of more :hmmm:

Go ahead and check out Chrono Cross(PS1) if you're primarily interested in an incredibly strong narrative (though it is incredibly enjoyable by itself, a comprehensive understanding of Chrono Trigger(SNES, PS1, NDS) goes a long way in furthering said enjoyment.). The game utilizes some very complex concepts to get its point across and I am an absolute sucker for it. It's one of very, very few RPGs that I can honestly say kept me intellectually satisfied.

It isn't for everyone though, like I stated earlier the game deals with some pretty complicated stuff and it's very easy for some to just write it off as a bit much. Second, terms of game play outside of a few boss encounters, it's on the fairly easy side. In addition to that, the cast of playable characters is very large (45 to be exact) and though most of the characters you get are fleshed out fairly well, there are a few "dead weights" in the bunch.

Oh and the original game in the series I mentioned earlier was released for the DS a while ago so I'm pretty sure you can find it for around $20 or less.

Other Recommendations:

Chrono Cross (PS1): (New: $19.85, Used: $9.48)
Chrono Trigger (NDS) (New: $19.99, Used: $13.50)
Xenogears (PS1, PSN) (New: $89.90, Used: $20.00)
Valkyrie Profile (PS1) (New: lol, Used: $63.63)
Persona 3 FES (PS2) (New $23.95, Used: $22.00)
Persona 4 (PS2) (New: $47.98, Used: $36.44)
Vagrant Story (PS1, PSN) (New: $89.94, Used: $18.99)
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS2) (New: $56.76, Used: $34.92)
Digital Devil Saga 1 (PS2) (New: $47.90, Used: $31.00)
Digital Devil Saga 2 (PS2) (New: $29.99, Used: $21.00)
Breath of Fire IV (PS1, PSN) (New: $149.99, Used: $35.00)

If you need a more in-depth explanation on any of them feel free to let me know and I can clear anything up. There's a couple that may burn a little hole in your pocket, a few notoriously so (Valkyrie Profile I'm looking at you.) so just a heads up. Any games that can be found on PSN are generally any where from $5.99 to $9.99 so you can save good money on a few of those. The prices otherwise listed are courtesy of amazon.com, anything further and you'll have to do the snooping on your own :P

If you want a different kind of RPG, i suggest the .hack// series. There's a ton of media spread all over about its lore, but you only need to play the games to get the gist of everything (they're the core experience). The story revolves around an MMO called The World. The series is known for its unconventional plot and element of mystery.

Also, Star Ocean Til the End of Time was good, didn't have turn based but was still a good game.

No. If you want to play a good Star Ocean game, then play the first one(SNES/PSP) and Second Story(PS1/PSP).

It's a TRAP.....kay.(sorry, Martel, lol)

Now I assumed you were looking into turn based strategy RPGs but since everyone just listing RPGs, here I go:

Chrono Trigger(SNES/PS1/NDS) - My favorite game of all time, can't go wrong with it.

Suikoden III(PS2) - In my opinion, a hidden gem in the PS2 library. A unique fighting system, there are six character stories you play through that all tie in at the end, you can recruit 100+ characters to help you build a kingdom, just really fun. And just to note, Suikoden I and II are rare games for the PS1. So if you find those, give them a chance as well.

Well if you haven't already played the Mother series (EarthBound here in the US), I'd say play any of those. Probably want to play Earthbound first, but Mother 3 has barely anything to do with it (as to not give away spoilers).

Well, since you want something for the DS, I'll recommend Golden Sun: The Dark Dawn. Can't say anything else, since I haven't actually played the game, but I know 5 of my friends, and 3 of my cousins whom have played the game and all of them gave the game a high rating.

For the PS3 - I recommend -

Resonance of Fates - while I didn't get very far, I've enjoyed it, solely because it was a new turn from traditional RPGs with the swords and the armor. The battle system may confuse you, like it did me, but I eventually figure the damn thing out, and I actually like it, despite it's complex process.

Another one is Valkyria Chronicles. Fantastic, fantastic game.

Star Ocean: TLH, like most people have said.

I advise you to check Trinity: Souls of Zill'Oll. It's surprisingly fun, and there's a demo for it on the PSN store. It's an action RPG, so you're gonna be kicking ass with 3 characters, whom you can freely switch to and off.

And Eternal Sonata.

In my honest opinion, don't start with a sequel game (regardless of how much these two have to do with each other).

Well if he's got a DS, as long as it's not a DSi, he can play the original two that were much better than the DS sequel. I still haven't beaten the first, but it's got a good story, and I know a few people that have told me it's a great game. Battle system takes a bit of getting used to, though.

If you enjoy SNES RPG's, I'd suggest Lufia I and Lufia II, both spectacular games

I agree. If you are willing to go all the way back to the 16 bit games, the Lufia games are pretty good.

And since you did not like the Xenosaga games(neither did I), then maybe you can go back and play Xenogears for the PS1. Aside from the AVALANCHE of dialogue, it is pretty good.

Resonance of fate is good, though it takes a lot of skill and understanding to get much enjoyment from it. I personally didn't get very far because of the difficulty of the battle system - I gave up and will try again one day.

One that has not been said yet is xbox360's the last remnant. It is so easy to see the flws of this game but I also found it so fun and addictive to develop your characters and squads. Nothing like using 4 weapon arts in a battle.

Persona 3 was excellent as well. Takes a lot to perfect it though.

Infinite undiscovery. Again, another massive game to perfect but once you get over the initial hump of the battle system, challenging and fun. :)

A difficult PS1 game is Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. It's different from Persona 3 and 4 (If you've played those, this one would feel very different)
