So! I shall be getting a PlayStation 3 this Christmas. I've somewhat made my choices on which games I want, but I think I need some backup opinion on what I've decided to get. I usually get consoles and games later than everyone else, just to make sure that I'm not getting gypped and that I'll be using the console for a long time. I've decided on a PS3.

So here's the list:

Mirror's Edge
Dead Space
Valkyria Chronicles
Assassin's Creed
Resident Evil 5

And I will get FFXIII when released. But you already knew that.

Good choices? Bad choices?

I also want a good FPS, but things like Modern Warfare never really appealed to me. I know how popular it is, so maybe I should give it a shot? I actually liked DoC a bit :gasp: and I want something that won't get boring easily.

Things like Soul Callibur, I don't want. It just gets repetitive and sorta boring to me. I am absolutely horrible at anything stealth. Oh yeah, and Heavy Rain looks pretty good. I might get that when it's released.

The Assassin's Creed games are killer, you'll love both of them, but in my opinion AC2 is the better of the 2 so far. However, playing the first makes the second one make more sense.

Other than that i've had a few buds who are into the Need for Speed racing games, you said you're not big into Call of Duty, so that's sorta out the window...

But yeah you're list looks like a good starter-upper.

Valkyria Chronicles is the only game on your list that I've played, but it's brilliant. There's so much to do, and the story is pretty great. The battle system is fun, and the graphics are gorgeous.

I haven't played any of the others, but I've heard nothing but praise for Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge :gasp:

Well i'd say you're better off getting Assassin's Creed 2 rather than 1, less repetitive at the very least

Resident Evil 5 is great fun, i'd reccomend that, I hear Dead Space is great too.

Valkyria Chronicles is good, but doesn't support online play, if that's a factor at all, and i'm 50-50 about Mirror's Edge tbh

Additions you may like are stuff like Borderlands, Tekken 6 (if you want to give that a shot) dragon Age: Origins etc are all pretty good.

There's Also Star Ocean The Last Hope, if you fancy that in Febuary... About all I can think of currently :gasp:

Five awesome choices there! :awesome: Valkyria Chronicles is certainly one to get for RPG fans!

Assassin's Creed II is a tremendous improvement over the first instalment. It has had nothing but praise, and I agree with that. The first AC wasn't bad, and you can fetch it for a good price nowadays.

For a non-Call of Duty FPS, there's Borderlands as Damon pointed that. It's an RPG/FPS hybrid (my favourite hybrid!) and Fallout 3. Fallout 3 is virtually grey, but ignore that because underneath it is a huge, deep and challenging game.

You must get the Uncharted games if you're getting a PS3. Uncharted 2 is perhaps one of the best games you can get on the PS3. Infamous isn't bad either. I haven't played it, but I heard it's an OK open-world action game.

The only one that strikes my fancy would be the Assassin's Creed games, which I haven't played yet, but I think it looks just plain epic. :jess:

Allow me to make a few suggestions, if you don't mind. XD

Grand Theft Auto IV. The Multiplayer is just plain epic. Deathmatch is loads of fun, just a regular shooting type game, but the people on there can just go nuts sometimes. It's just a blast. I haven't even played the story mode yet, tbh. XD

Little Big Planet...is one that I've been told to get. XD I haven't played it yet, having a PS3 myself not that long, as well. As far as I know, it's just supposed to be epic, too.

Hopefully I helped. :gasp:

I'd avoid Assassin's Creed, if I were you. I haven't played the second, so I'm not sure about it, but the first was absolutely abysmal. It was something of a letdown, putting it mildly.

If you don't have it for the Xbox 360, I wholeheartedly recommend BioShock. It blends FPS with a survival horror atmosphere brilliantly and if you like stuff like Resi 5 and Dead Space, it'll be a much better choice than Call of Duty would be.

If you want an RPG to last you until FFXIII (or Star Ocean: The Last Hope International if you're getting it) I'd suggest Disgaea: Absence of Justice. As a rule, the Disgaea series is unmerciful in difficulty and absolutely hilarious.

Hopefully this helps~

Mirror's Edge is a great game. The visuals are amazing and the whole concept is awesome. It has some haters but I really liked the game. Don't change your mind on that one.

Personally I though Mirror's edge was terrible.

Assassin's creed 2 is a very good game, if quite short.
RE5 is alright, it's not particularly great though. If you want a FPS then you might like Killzone 2.
Almost everyone loves Little Big Planet so you should probably get that too. Dragon Age origins is also pretty good.
Even though you said you don't like it, I'd get CoD:MW or MW2, they are by far and away the best FPSs that the PS3 has got.

I would recommend both of the ACs,simply because there's quite a lot to do for both of them, only problem was AC2 i thought was short and was surprised it ended fast,i dunno how long it took me to finish it.

Right now i'm playing Modern Warfare 2 and i love it,i'm not really a fan of the CoD series, but i decided to buy it, and i made a clan with my friends and it's a real laugh ^_^ graphics are very good.

GTA IV is also very good, nice storyline and good multiplayer.

Little Big Planet is a good game if your up for a laugh with some friends or online, making the sackboy(?) look funny in different costumes.

If your not into FPS, there is Fallout 3, which is an EPIC game, choose to be good or evil, your actions determine the future of the game, i would highly recommend this one ^_^

This might sounds stupid but you can buy FF7 on the ps3 store for 7 pounds.

Hope this helps :)

Alright, thanks guys.

I'm trying to go for older games, because at my local Best Buy Mirror's Edge and Dead Space are $14.99, and with all these new games they're $59.99. I doubt I'd be able to get very many at that price.

Revised list:

Valkyria Chronicles
Mirror's Edge
Dead Space
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

For now, and then when I get some more money I'll probably go for Assassin's Creed 2 and maybe Borderlands.

However, you can play AC2 if you've not played AC and still understand it, right? I never liked the idea of playing the second of something first, but I guess in this case it'll have to be that way.

Eh, I looked at the gameplay for Borderlands and it looks kinda stupid but I guess I'll give it a go.

So if any of you guys find cheap but good ones, my bank account would thank you.

Keep in mind that I haven't played AC2 yet, but the first game didn't have an overly complex storyline. If you do a bit of online reading, you could probably figure out the broad outline of the story in about 2 minutes. Also I'd like to add that I wouldn't recommend buying the first Assassins Creed, it is good fun for a few hours but it gets very repetitive quickly. I'd suggest renting it instead of actually buying it.

Personally I'd recommend that you re-add Resident Evil 5 to your list. I really enjoyed it, but it is a love it or hate it kind of game. If you were a fan of the rest of the series (particularly RE4) I would definitely recommend that you get it.

I'd also suggest that you add Metal Gear Solid 4 to your list. To be honest I'm a little surprised that I am the first person to mention this game. It's a great game with an engaging story and addictive gameplay.

I know you said that Modern Warfare never really appealed to you. But if you really want a FPS game MW is the way to go. In my opinion, it is by far the best FPS game on the PS3. I haven't had a chance to play MW2 on the PS3 yet, but I have played it on the 360 and I enjoyed it a lot.

Finally, although I haven't actually played Mirrors Edge I have heard from a friend that it is very short and has little replay value. But if it is selling for $14.99 I guess you can't really go wrong. :monster:

Yea, but some people you'd be like 'and s/he is...who?'

AC1 is only £10 here, it's cheap now that AC2 is out and it's about a good 3-4 year old game.

Just looked at a review for BorderLands, looks awesome so i'm gonna get it (when my pockets ain't empty). If you ain't too sure about BL then have a look at IGN's review here:

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/957207/borderlands/videos/borderlands_vdr_101909.html

Hope i helped you out a bit.

EDIT: Just read Sashman's post, renting AC is probally best.

Mirror's Edge is a solid title, I'd just worry about the replay value in it though, it's a good game to play on and off after the first time but not so much to play it for a large amount of time since it gets slightly repetitive.

I haven't really played Dead Space since it's not my type of game but Lew said it was really good. I haven't played Valkyria Chronicles either so I couldn't see if it were any good. Assassin's Creed was a very good title in my opinion, if you can look past the repetitiveness it's got a solid plot and the graphics are fantastic, apparently for the majority part Assassin's Creed II has ironed out some of the repetitiveness. Resident Evil 5 is a good title for a first playthrough but I don't think it has much replay value unless you like online =/

It very much depends on your budget, I could give you a whole list of solid Playstation 3 titles that I've played or am getting for Xmas (which would then be going on several reviews):

New games:
Assassins Creed II - I've yet to play this but I've heard nothing but praise from the reviews. I know it's reported to have some of the repetitiveness that Assassin's Creed had but there's supposed to be much left of it and also a far superior storyline and character depth. The 3 minute video of the AC summary would be suffice to pick up on the AC storyline.

Ratchet and Clank: A Crack In Time - I think the title says it all, Ratchet and Clank is just one of those games you thoroughly enjoy playing without stressing over not being able to get past certain parts. The witty humour from what I've been told and the graphics are as gorgeous as ever. Demo was fantastic and persuaded me to buy it without having to bat an eyelid.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - Simply put. The best game I've ever played on the Playstation 3. It was the perfect game, especially having seen the improvement from Uncharted to Uncharted 2. The original characters that remain are still amongst the best characters to ever grace a game, and my top 3 characters out of all the games I've played probably come from Uncharted 2. The new characters are fantastic and add just as much emotion and depth. The storyline is brilliant and is an improvement on Uncharted which in itself would be difficult to accomplish. The fighting system has also been improved. Graphics are probably the best a current PS3 game has atm.

Dragon Age: Origins - I haven't really read the reviews in enough detail to give a thorough opinion, especially since the video review over at game trailers started giving away spoilers with the first minute >.> I've took the opinion from SapphireStar and Hal though that's it's a very enjoyable game.

Borderlands
- Again, another game I'm personally getting for Xmas due to the reviews it got though I was probably persuaded by Shu's opinion on it more than anything, especially as it seems he has an eye for very good titles.

Older games:
Assassin's Creed: You could probably comfortably and happily settle for Assassin's Creed should you not be able to get your hands on Assassin's Creed II. The fighting system was solid, albeit a tad easy since the AI's only ever come at you one at a time. The side missions add a nice touch that take you way from the main storyline, problem being they're consistently the same missions throughout each city. Assassinations have been thought out well and I liked the depth of the storyline towards the end of the game.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
- If you can't get Uncharted 2 then this is a must, with Uncharted 2 being my favourite game on the Playstation 3 so far, Uncharted probably follows in in second. It's basically the same as Uncharted 2 in terms that it has a brilliant character depth, storyline, graphics and fighting system. Top quality title.

Bioshock - I'm in a love-hate relationship with this game. I absolutely loved it when I was playing, there's probably more twists and turns in this game then any other game I've played which I loved because I love games with a deep storyline, and even the main character is very likeable though the information on him is limited. However, when I'm not playing the game I always question whether I did actually like it for some reason, I though the RPG element mixed with the FPS genre was great but I'm really not a fan of survival horror titles.

Mirror's Edge - Another top title and it's a unique game, I certainly haven't played a game that's anything like it. The free running element really gives it a breath of fresh air. My main concern would be it could get very repetitive very quickly, you'd be fine for the first play through but whether or not is has a good replay value would be arguable.

Oblivion IV: Elder Scrolls - This game was fantastic and could easily keep you going into a hundred hours. The missions were fantastic and ever the side-quests were brilliant. The plus point of this is not only can you get the Game of The Year edition now, it's an oldish title and a platinum title so you'd be able to pick it up cheap.

Fallout 3 - Similar to Oblivion IV, just in a more futuristic. I enjoyed the main storyline more in this game because it felt as if there was more depth to the main character and the relationship with others, especially his father, was deeper than relationships in Oblivion IV. The side-quests though weren't as good I don't think although they were still decent, the amount of time to complete isn't as long either. Again, as a Game of The Year edition with all but one DLC (I think only one isn't on there) you can still pick it up for a relatively cheap price.

Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction - I think either this R&C title or the other one, Quest For Booty would be suffice if you couldn't get a hold of A Crack In Time, although Quest For Booty was on the PSN store first so I think it'd be short than Tools of Destruction. Still this title keeps the fantastic and humourous atmosphere throughout the game and the characters are as likeable as always as is the gameplay which keeps all the loveable R&C elements.

LittleBigPlanet - This is another I'm not entirely sure about. Technically it's brilliant and definitely nothing like any other game has seen before, but it's one of those titles that you'd have to play on and off to like it all the time. On your own it gets quite boring if you play it for a fairly long time, but you could get away with it if you played with a friend. Online levels created by other LittleBigPlanet owners is definitely where it's all at though.

I don't know what your budget is for buying games so I just listed a set of new and older games that I've played myself and really enjoyed or might be worth looking into. I could list more but they're main FPS's like Call of Duty and such like which you don't want so I strayed away from them. Hope it helps. (y)

I got a PS3 for Christmas as well so I stocked up on games before then, this is what I ended up with

Ratchet & Clank Tools Of Destruction
Ratched & Clank A Crack In Time
inFAMOUS
LittleBigPlanet
Star Wars The Force Unleashed
Lego Star Wars
Uncharted
Devil May Cry 4
Dragon Ball Raging Blast
Wolverine
Batman Arkham Asylum.

Wolverine is a great hack n slash game.
Havent played Crack In Time, Uncharted or DMC 4 yet.
Batman is an awesome action game with great story
Dragon Ball I found to be disappointing
Tools of Destruction is rapidly climbing my fave games list, great 3rd person shooter/action/adventure/platformer game.
inFamous is great fun with a free roam style.
LittleBigPlanet is very fun, but you need patience.
And Star Wars Force, who could pass on the idea of being Vader's apprentice, fun game, not very long though.
Lego Star Wars is great multiplayer to just mess around on.

These games I'd reccomend :D
