I just found an old container on our kitchen counter where we had stored some homemade ice cream. I made the mistake of opening it, and experienced one of the most rancid smells ever. The residue from the ice cream had been sitting out for probably a few weeks, and had spoiled pretty bad. Imagine rotten eggs and spoiled milk tossed in together. =\

What's the worst thing that you've found in your kitchen or refrigerator?

I don't know if one thing stands out. I've found some pretty grotesque stuff in the fridge. The spoiled mac and cheese I encountered a few months ago ranks up there. That stuff is horrible even when it isn't encrusted in mold.

I didn't even know it what it was when I opened it. I thought it was some sort of fruit dish at first. Horrible.

Ugh, about two days worth of marinated chicken that was FIRST left out in the open (unrefrigerated) over 24 hours, and THEN was put in the refrigerator for a few days more. My dad's so bad about that...talk about parasites, eh. I made the mistake of eating them once and for 6 hours, I was in the bathroom in and out, throwing up like crazy. But yeah, that's really one of the sickest thing I'll find in our refrigerator...especially since my dad doesn't put any covering in it.

Durian. Its a Philippine fruit.
It's like the gysahl pickles of FF9. There are those who hate it and those who love it. Unfortunately, my mom has taken quite an addiction to it these days.
Whether it's spoiled or not, it just smells awful to me. It's strong stinging smell can reach around 12 meters in diameter. >_>

I find old food all the time >_>

Yestrerday I threw some mustard in the bin that went off lasy year sometime, some plumed tomatoes that went off last decemeber and a couple of weeks ago I wanted to bake some bread only to find the flour went off in 2006 -__- You cantell how often I get the urge to bake xD

By far the worst thing that I have come across was sour milk.....which I just grabbed from the fridge and took a swig of >_> It was VILE. I spat it everywhere >_<

Ack, I hate the smell of Durian...but for some reason, it's actually quite good...once you get past of the smell, that is. A lot of pregnant women seems to crave for these too.

Let's see...I also found some rotten tomatoes and fruit salad last week. Gross.

Hmmm, can food left in the good old school bag count too? :wacky:

I remember leaving a banana in my bag over a summer holiday, well, I didn't notice it until the middle of January. I peered into my bag, and I instantly ran. T'wasn't nice -_-

Another holiday found me with watermelon left in my bag. Thankfully this time it was in a container. The stench was around for two weeks, and the bag got three hand scrubbed baths with dish washing detergent and multiple can of air freshener was lost.

And only about a few months ago, lurking in the bag I found a green sandwich. It was a Vegemite and cheese sandwich. I'll never forget what shade of green that cheese was.

I don't even know the worst thing I found in my refrigerator because there have been so many of them. I've had milk thats been in there for over 3 months before. I had mac & cheese in a container that turned black and was so hairy I didn't even know what it was and I ended up throwing away the container.

I even admit there have been some stuff in paper bags that I've had in my fridge that I was too afraid to open to see what it was since it was sitting in there for a while.

We don't have a lot of old food lying about, my mum always chucks things out before they can get mouldy. >_>

Although I was cleaning out my bedroom once and found a tub of old raspberries under my bed. They were black and covered with fuzzy bits of green. D: Ugh, it was horrible, I wouldn't have been surprised if they started moving when I picked them up. <_<

Oh and a few years ago I went to Rome with my school by bus, and my mum gave me some sausage rolls for the journey which ended up lost and forgotten about at the bottom of my bag. When I got back my mum was cleaning out my bag and found them.. eugh..

Another great find around our apartment (perhaps if my roommates could be bothered to clean up after themselves -__-)...an old bowl of nachos and salsa. Also, a few weeks back, I smelt something odd in the kitchen. A bell pepper had been sitting out for a week and was still in the bag, it was starting to leak this...juice everywhere. =\

Speaking of milk, it was my job to clean our dorm's refrigerator a few years back, and I found not one, but two gallons of milk that were over three months old.

It's kind of funny, though, how easy it is for us to leave stuff out for too long. Especially in the fridge, where it gets pushed back to the corner and forgotten forever.

Haha... I'm one of the few people who RARELY see stuff like that. We rarely have left overs at my place. If we do... it gets eaten within a day or two. XD

I thought I'd found myself a simple meal when I found some Frankfurters in the cupboard, but when I opened them, I found out that they've gone white. >> So they're there for halloween. :monster:

There's also half a ham and pineapple pizza in my bedroom cupboard from some time round January. I'm scared to open that cupboard.

I swear I saw a video of that in sophomore history.

I once found sixth month old potato salad in my fridge.

Old food

Ok so this morning I discovered just how annoying it can be when food goes off.

Here's the scenario: I woke up and had to be at the Gym in an hour for a personal training session. So I had a shower and got ready, then I needed a quick breakfast to give me the proper energy required for a good workout.

So I got a bowl of Special K ready and started pouring the milk in. At which point I realized the milk had gone sour (despite the fact the use by date was a few days from now). So then I remembered that I had some Bagels left over from a few days ago so I went to grab one and noticed it had gone off. Then I decided to try to make toast and yes you guessed it, it had gone stale.

I finally settled on some yogurt which I only picked because it was past it's BEST BEFORE date not its USE BY date. Realizing that the yogurt wouldn't be enough I grabbed some Pita bread (which tasted funny but there was no obvious mold).

Ok so the stale bread wasn't too huge of a surprise to me, but it is quite rare for me to let the milk go off.

So I guess the question I'm asking here is how often do you let food go off in your house?

Our fridge is abit dodgy at the moment, chosing as and when it wants to work properly and keep the food cool like it should. So Milk tends to go off quite quickly sometimes whilst others it last alot longer. VERY tempramental. I always never seem to get through a loaf of Bread until I'm in the mood for it, which usually by that time mould has began to surface.

Got a pie to eat today. Have to otherwise it won't keep till tomorrow and it's too good to go to waste.

It's not so much food with me as it is with drinks, I don't buy a lot of food so there isn't much to go off. But I did bite into a week old pizza once, expecting it to be only a day old, I threw up in the box, week old pizza is truly disgusting.
But like I said, it's mostly fizzy drinks with me, I'll buy them, then forget that I have them and buy another, then forget I've got two and go get a glass of water. Then they all go flat and I have to throw them out.

The damn Irish bread goes off in three days... The other day I was having veg soup and got some bread. Since I was watching TV while eating, I never noticed the mold on my bread. The food mixed up in my mouth so I couldn't really feel the strange taste of my bread. After I finished eating there were still some bits left. I glanced at the bread and saw the green mold on it. I didn't throw up but I felt very sick for the rest of the day and drank nothing but water.

I used to have a lot of old food that inhabited my fridge and the food pantry. Now that I live with someone, all the old food seems to be gone. They either eat it now before it goes bad, or they throw it away before I find it. I used to be so bad that when it went bad, it just sat there until I couldn't stand it anymore.
