Maybe there is one of these and I just haven't found it.

But I noticed that when people post links to certain news stories, usually weird things, it often gets moved to the spam section. Many or all of the posts in the threads are not really spammy. Could we possibly have a forum for news stories? Maybe current events where you can post any journalist story you come across? Yeah we have the sleeping forest but "Man Playing Frogger gets hit by SUV" isn't something that we can really debate XD

I think that would be what Costa del Sol is for. "Discuss all general topics that don't go in other forums" or something along those lines. And it's a post count area as well, so that should work out with that.

Although Jesse is right, and Costa can be used, I'm quite in favour of a general news section as well. People could post serious news, fun news, Celebrity news... etc.

But, is enough news posted to warrant such a section? If it was, I'd be very much in favour of a separate news section, but, if it's just the odd thread, then Costa is the way to go.

I was thinking along the same lines.

There aren't a whole lot of people that post those stories and it would be a subsection wasted in my honest opinion. Best to leave it in Costa Del Sol. :hmmm:

Well, we already have Costa del Sol where general topic threads usually go, so news threads don't necessarily have to be placed in The Sleeping Forest. And as for many news threads being moved to Spam, well I have seen various instances when the posts start off on topic and reasonable enough in length, but then it kind of deteriorates to spam, but I'm not fully sure on the whole of Gaia. It's generally up to the discretion of the Gaia mods what may count as spam. I wouldn't mind a news section though, but at the moment I don't think it's that necessary. :hmmm:

Could always try it anyway - if it doesn't work out, it's easy enough just to move the threads to Costa and delete the other forum. If it's busy enough that someone complains about moving too many threads then they don't need to be moved. :wacky:

Maybe no one posts as much news to warrant a forum because, paradoxically, we don't have a forum for it.

If posts in those topics become spammy, can a mod give a warning and delete all spam posts?

I guess the reason I suggested a section, is that I often come across interesting stories, but I am not always sure where to post them here. And I do not want to flood the general section forum with all of them. (Even though I tend to do that with my own topics XD)

I think I used to see this happen every once in a while when I first joined, where a mod would give a warning and the thread would soon end up back on track. I liked that idea because if you are off the forum for a few days, and don't see the thread until it's already been moved to spam, then it's not fair that if you wanted to say something serious in there, it would get no post count because the spam won out. (Though if you make a joke somewhere within a serious post, then I do think that should still be allowed, so long as it doesn't break forum rules by being too offensive or something.)

I've run across this a couple of times too--sometimes I'll see an interesting story or something that I think people should know about, but it's not always really something debatable, so I have no idea where to post it :hmmm: And I agree that people would probably post more stories like that if there was a designated section for them.

I'm going to add to this and say that I had to think very very carefully before I decided to post my thread about the Ipad/pod/phone/droid app privacy intrusion in the sleeping forest. I didn't really think it belonged there, however I thought that was the best place for it...it really isn't a "debatable" topic but it is a serious topic nonetheless so I thought it had to go in the sleeping forest.

It probably could have gone in Costa, but when I think of Costa I think more of every day life topics...and of course spam.

My thought is that if you guys were to add a News section to the forums, you would have to divvy that up into sections as well. Almost like the newspaper. You've got sports news, celeb news, Technology news, world, and local news. If you didn't divide it up it could get irritating for people to post everything under one general news heading and then you'd be scrolling for awhile trying to decipher through what you want to read and what you don't want to read. :gasp:

Some very good points made, ladies (and Dave :wacky:). Mark brought it up in HQ, so we'll look into it and let you know.

A minor oversight, I hope. (sorry. D=)

Anyways, I quite like this idea as well. I remember when Pooley suggested this a couple of years ago and it got good support but was somehow not implemented. As far as departmentalizing the section, I guess we can see what threads get created there and see if there's enough variety to warrant different sub-sections. As it is, sports news for example would fit quite comfortably in Sports Grounds.

Costa is the general go-to forum for this sort of thing, but stuff like news does tend to get lost in all the other fluff. :hmmm:

This has never happened to me before. :wacky:

About divying the forum up in to sections - I don't agree.

Topics in the FFVII forum aren't divided in to chocobo-breeding-related topics, boss topics, materia topics, philosophy topics - it's all in one. Similarly, the religious debate forum isn't sub-divided in to Islamic topics, Christian topics, Sikh topics, Protestant topics etc. The Film forum isn't broken up in to horror, comedy, fantasy sections etc.

smry: I don't agree that the news forum HAS to be split in to more than one area. The SE news forum isn't split up and that works just fine, gossip magazines are fine, newspapers tend to have LIFE followed by SPORT, and LIFE includes everything from murder to politics to music to dear dierdre. 1 forum for all is fine imo.

For the "Man Playing Frogger" thread, I debated with myself whether to delete the posts and post a warning or to just move it to spam. I ended up moving it to spam mainly because I would have had to delete about 10ish posts, and even though it's lazy on my part, it was just too far gone at that point. If I caught it earlier when spammy posts started, I would have kept it in Costa and did this, but it was too far overrun by spammers. And the topic was sort of a silly one, even though it really happened and was a tragedy.

Honestly, I don't see much improvement from a new sub-forum in Midgar. That thread for example was fine in Costa, if it was taken seriously. If it's about music, it can go into the Music Studio sub-forum in Midgar. If it's something debatable (and usually political) then it can go into The Sleeping Forest. For the most part, there's usually always a place that you could put a news article. Usually Costa is the place you can put very odd and random topic threads. So I don't see a real good reason to make a News Section sub-forum. Just my 2 cents.

Just a heads up. The general Midgar section description has been edited to accomodate news of any kind after some discussion in staff. News that does not belong in any of Midgar's sub-forums can be placed in general Midgar. Topics like the Mr. Frogger thread can be placed there.

What about Science stories?

Coz ima nerd and i come across a lot of interesting things..............I try and keep it relative and not inform everyone of the discovery of every new particle or nebula:lew:

But interesting things like......well interesting things.

Pretty much any news that doesn't really produce a debate would go in Midgar.

Yeah, I wouldn't even have guessed that Midgar would be the place to go to for that kind of stuff but after seeing all the threads that have been placed there I thought that yeah, that was the right call. :lew:

Science news can be there too, just to back up what Tia said. Although if it's serious enough, I think Sleeping Forest can be used for that purpose as it has done for a while now.

Well, that saved some work from the admins. Thanks to Mitsuki for that call. :wacky:

Well then, I think this thread has served its purpose, so I will go ahead and close this now. ;)

Thanks for the input, guys.
