And boy was I disappointed. Visually it's probably one of the most stunning movies ever made, but the story leaves a lot to be desired. It's basically just another one of those Dances With Wolves/Disney's Pocahontas/The Last Samurai type of movies, and they did not bother with any originality of any kind whatsoever. The whole thing is so predictable from start to finish, and overtly long as well. Why this movie hasn't been killed by the critics is completely beyond me. I guess that everyone these days just prefer style over substance...

I'm going to be seeing this today and tbh, i'm not too hopeful (mainly because, like Spirits Within it's a completely new film with some brand stuck on it to make it sell)

Suppose when I get back later i'll have more of an opinion on it, hopefully it won't be too big a waste of money... I hear the plot is decipherable from the trailors though, which doesn't sound too promising, just a good job i've never really shown much interest in the movie itself anyway.

Aww, that's a bummer... I wanted to that movie looked pretty intresting. :/ If it's as horrible as you say, maybe I shouldn't bother going to the movies. Just renting it or something of that sort.

No matter how predictable the story is, I still recommend seeing it in cinema (especially if it's available in 3D) because the visuals are insanely good and watching it on a normal TV takes away from the whole experience. I didn't think the story was that bad, because in "big" movies most stories are extremely predictable.

However, on a positive outlook of the film I don't think it got this score for nothing though; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/ and no matter how many people argue against that point, it's taken from nearly 45,000 ratings.

At the end of the day, I'd go see it and make your own opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed it whereas some people didn't, but people won't enjoy it if they had a negative opinion on it before watching it anyway. Is the story fairly predictable? Yes. But aren't a lot of films? Take James Bond for example, it has the most linear, predictable and uninteresting storyline and main character in filming history but it doesn't stop people going to see it and enjoying it :monster:

I saw it the other night in 3D and I'll admit that while the story was predictable, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd definitely recommend seeing it in the cinema as opposed to renting it on DVD simply because the main attraction of the film lies in its visuals. It is well worth a watch. However, I think that in a few years time the film will be long forgotten when movies come out with visuals that are more spectacular than Avatar's. It's a good movie but not an instant classic.

The best review of this movie was just one line from a friend:

"The only thing that wasn;t one dimensional in this movie where the effects"

It was quite fun to watch a 3D movie on a big screen, but the movie was very predictable on all fronts.

Also, most of the alien life forms where just creatures from Earth with new textures, what's up with that? I really liked the flora, too bad of the pretty lame fauna.

I'd rate it 7/10, which means it's nice to watch in the theatre with some friends and a beer, but no quality material.

I thought it was one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

Sure it may have been a bit predictable but that didn't mean it wasn't a good movie.

Stunning effects and just the world in general was brilliant!

It went for around three hours but I enjoyed every minute of it. =)

Agreed 100%; the film is essentially The Last Samurai set in the future. I'll admit that it looked absolutely incredible, but that does not make a good film. It lacked any kind of depth or real reason other than the visual to keep watching. The concept of the world and having an Avatar was brilliant, but unfortunately the final product doesn't do that concept justice. It should have ended when
the humans destroy Home Tree.
I can't grasp why people are saying it was the best film of 2009, because it was far from it. I'd put it nearer the bottom of my list tbh. :/

I think the best thing though, is that the die hard fans of Avatar have apparently being getting clinically depressed over the realisation that Pandora is not in fact real, and they're stuck on Earth with no chance of having their own Avatar.

That made me laugh. >.>

I was satisfied with the movie - in fact, more than satisfied. Yes story-wise and plot I acknowledge that it's lacking any originality, but for me there's more than just the brilliant effects and CG. On the whole I actually enjoyed the film and it's definitely on the top of my list somewhere. I guess maybe after seeing so many crappy movies throughout the year (thanks to my sister-in-law and her nonstop babbling for me to go see this and that) I finally saw one that I really really like, hence it stood out to me for many reasons, ones that I can really only understand. Definitely worth seeing in theatres.

Went to go see it this evening and I left the cinema very pleasantly surprised.

Loved the detail, the N'avi, the whole concept of the story. I have a post in the "Last Movie You've Seen" thread of my opinion of the film. I'm just hoping there's really a sequel to it. For a film fifteen years in the making, it's really impressed me.

Really, a sequel? There's nothing for them build on, the film just doesn't warrant a sequel.

I heard a couple of days ago that its already up the second highest grossing film ever, just behind Titanic. It took just 17 days for it to break the $1 billion mark. It took Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest over 200 days for that.

Like one of many, I was pleasantly surprised when walking out of the cinema when I watched it last week. Didn't really expect much plot to it apart from some silly compulsion towards 'love', and although that was pretty much his main reason for defending what wasn't his, it was a thoroughly entertaining film. Best of '09? Hardly. Dark Knight and even Sherlock Holmes stand above it as far as I'm concerned, but that shouldn't take away from the quality of the film.

I liked the depth of the N'avi culture and their understanding/appreciation/respect for all life; that was quite an interesting device when comparing to the... frustratingly accurate portrayal of humans (such as the commander and that corporate guy - the latter having a conscience but fails to act on it because of, well, money). Lord of the Rings (the books...) was pretty much portraying the same message too; industrialism and capitalism is dominating the beauty of nature.

But anyway, I rate this film fairly well, though others do possess higher ranking. In regards to its general success, it was advertised for ages to be something "amazing" so it's a given that everyone would go and see it at some point, if even out of curiosity.

Additionally: I saw it in 3D. Assum.

I think I've watched way too many re-runs of Friends to be able to buy into Giovanni Ribisi as Blockbuster type villain in any way, shape and form. Glad it worked for others though :wacky:

Watch Saving Private Ryan, then you can take him seriously. I completely forgot about his pyro shit on Friends when he was scattered around saving lives...up until he asked for more morphine. Then it was like, "Ohh, there's the addictive attribute."

That movie in which he was one of the guys who was not Tom Hanks? He didn't remind me of Friends in that one, but I think that's mostly due to anyone in the movie who's not Tom Hanks is more or less just a glorified set piece. Hell I'd even completely forgot that he was in that movie until you said it!

Despite varying opinions on Avatar (I haven't seen it), it has passed Titanic.

The good news for me, is after you apply inflation, it's still behind 1977's Star Wars Episode IV, by 900 mil. If you don't apply inflation, it obviously decimated Star Wars, but still.

EDIT: And technically, after inflation, Avatar is still behind Titanic by just under 600 mil.

I believe there will be 3 films in total, can't confirm that yet

Personally I really enjoyed the film and the storyline I think one of the problems with films like this is its over played in the media so when it does come out poeple are expecting amazing things.

One of two films I've happily gone to see twice, so that alone tells me I loved it. Granted, the plot was quite a bit like Pocahontas but who can hate a classic? The story was fantastic and modern, the CGI was immense, the music and direction topped anything I've seen for quite a while...just believe the hype and watch it. Or pre-order it like me.
