Personally, I prefer Nicholson, Heath is great, but Nicholson brought more of the comedic side which seemed more crazy to me, Ledger had abit more of a sinister side.

Both were greatly casted, and were great in the role though.
 
Now I haven't seen the new one, and from what I've seen Heath Ledger does look pretty nifty, I know that I will always prefer Jack Nicholson as The Joker, it's just his role >_>

That and he's like one of my favourite actors so it will take ALOT To convince me otherwise

Anyhoo, Im going watching Dark Knight next week so hopefully I won't be returning to eat my words <_<
 
Heath Ledger all the way. While Jack Nicholson did bring more of a comedic side, Heath still brought out the more pyschotic, insane side to The Joker. Nicholson just seemed to, I dunno...laugh A LOT, which sure made things funny, but Ledger was just the better one.

My husband I were just discussing the older Batman movies vs the newer ones last night. The newer ones, in our opinions, are more realistic. I mean yes, Nicholson did pull off a good Joker, but Ledger just takes the cake as The Joker in my opinion. I prefer the more realistic side to The Joker that Ledger pulled off than what I do Nicholson's cartoony aspect of him, if that makes any sense...
 
I think I've only seen like...one Batman film apart from The Dark Knight and I'm not sure the joker in that was Nicholson or not. Either way, Ledger was amazing in The Dark Knight the way he could manipulate people and he was just freaky :wacky:
Albeit, Christian Bale was still far superior to Ledger in TDK.
 
While I haven't seen the one with Jack Nicholson in it yet, but from what I've seen in that clip, definitely Heath Ledger for me. Jack Nicholson did laugh a lot and from what I've seen on his face, he doesn't really convince me as The Joker, whereas Ledger really pulled it off excellently. Seriously, while watching that movie, I felt a little creeped out by him.
There were a few times where he held a knife near the actors' mouth and I thought, "Man, it must have been really scary having that knife near their mouths, especially by Heath Ledger. He's so serious-looking!"
And it's true...it made me feel that if I were those actors, I probably would've fidgeted around and become extremely nervous, even if it was just acting. Heath Ledger was just SO convincing!

I'm sure Jack Nicholson did really well playing The Joker too, but Heath Ledger really took the role way too seriously. You can see it in the way he acted.
 
Ledger was the better of the two hands down. Ledger pulled off the character so well and made it his own, you can see the craziness all over him and it was a stunning performance overall. Nicholson on the other hand wasn't crap but he was just playing Nicholson in Joker makeup, he was in no way near Ledger's level.
 
Without the sense of irony or anything, Heath Ledger reminds me of Brandon Lee in "The Crow"

It's not as easy as sayin yea Nicholson was better or Ledger was better because there is some many aspects of the character 'the joker' to think about, like Ledger's facial make-up i thought looked better than Nicholson's as during the film it didn't stay perfect it became more smudged and bit's got wiped off.

Nicholson's maniacal laugh was a hole lot better than Ledger's. Ledger's performance was amazing but so was Nicholson's so they are joint in that aspect and as for psychotic actions i can't judge as i haven't watched the original joker in many years. although
Ledger did shoot the Batmobile with a Bazooka from practically point blank range from the side of a moving truck
 
I thought Ledger was fantastic, without any exaggeration he has made top of my favourite villains list. Nicholson however I never really liked, his performance just didn’t get me. These two points make my choice easy and obvious.
 
I think Heath was better.

It must be remembered that the Joker, above all else, is a sinister figure. He's has some clown-like aspects about him, but he is a criminal mastermind, an arch-nemesis of Batman. Heath better captured the psychotic side to the Joker, and was comedic at the same time (albeit in a dark way, but how else would a criminal be comedic?).

At the same time, the acting was on a different level. Often, I forgot that the Joker in the Dark Knight was actually an actor. Call it lame, but I got into that character like no other character before.
 
I've never been a huge Heath Fan but I prefer his Joker 100 folds more then Jack's. Jack gave people the impression that The Joker was supposed to be a clown. Which has drove me CRAZY having to explain to so many people that he is not a clown.
Heath pulled off what the Joker is supposed to be and he did it perfectly.
 
Heath ledger definetly did the better role imo (rest his soul). He made me laugh at times and then say WTF is wrong with this man to. The whole licking his lips thing and him grabbing people's face portrayed joker perfectly to me.
 
Both play the Joker very well in my opinion. Jack was good for comedy, but Heath not only scared the hell out of me with his laugh, but he also made the Joker attractive ... for me anyway lol! Jack played the Joker in true Gotham comic book style, but finally the Joker had a fixed grin that I wanted and Heath pulled it off. He had a more modern Joker look and was just amazing.
 
Ledger's Joker leave even Nicholson's Joker in the realm of mere mediocrity.
 
I prefer Heath Ledger's Joker, if only for the acting itself. Heath Ledger has never really portrayed a character like that before, so I was incredibly impressed by his performance in Dark Knight. Jack Nicholson on the other hand...The Joker wasn't a stretch for him. Nicholson tends to always play characters like The Joker...such as the mob boss in The Departed, etc. While I liked Nicholson's Joker, I was much more impressed by Ledger's. Plus, Ledger's Joker was much more calculated and intelligent, while Nicholson's Joker was just...looney. I prefer the more intelligent villainous characters over the crazy ones.

My vote goes to Ledger.

Basically my opinion.

Jack nailed it in terms of a more comical approach to the Joker, judging by his appearance as well as acting/personality.

Heath Ledger, on the other hand, was not going for this route--obviously--and instead, opted to do something entirely different with a much more dark, satirical, kooky rendition which worked insanely well for him. He pulled it off and, out of the two, this Joker has to be my favorite.
 
I finally went to see The Dark Knight yesterday. It has been a while since I've seen the 1989 version of Batman (IMDB says it came out in 1989... I thought it came out in the early 90's).

For many years, Batman and Batman Returns had remained my favorites. Some of its contemporaries could scarcely compare (Batman vs. Batman and Robin... yeah right). Batman Forever, while good, could not burn nearly as brightly as Tim Burton's genius films had.

Then came Christopher Nolan.

I still treasure Batman and Batman Begins. But for the first time, I have viewed Batman films that I like as much as I like Tim Burton's films. I like The Dark Knight equally as well as I like Batman, but for separate reasons. Batman had a realism to it that no other Batman film had. Although the characters resembled the comic book characters, the movie had its own visual effects and plot events that made it more realistic. Jack Nicholson's Joker was most certainly sinister in his own right.

Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight, however, added to the Joker's depth. Heath Ledger's Joker made one clearly understand why the Joker is not only a villain, but a suitable rival to Batman. He is certainly not just some crazed man dressing himself up to get his ass kicked. Heath Ledger's Joker is similar to how I've personally viewed Kefka of Final Fantasy VI (with some differences, of course. The famous Kefka cosplayer tends to represent a more standard ideal of Kefta. But I digress.)

This paragraph is filled with spoilers. Jack Nicholson's Joker tends to use a different approach to humor. He tells puns and lighthearted jokes. Heath Ledger's jokes, however, are not the kind to be laughed at outloud. For instance, his magic trick in making the pencil disappear made my blood run cold. Also,
the fact that he wore a campaign sticker for Harvey Dent while fuxxing with Harvey's mind also made my blood run cold.
Although both Jokers were ballsy, Heath Ledger's Joker did not leave room for the impression that he had any sense of "compassion". Nor did he make idle threats. He normally carried through with whatever he promised.

In short, I love both Jokers... but Heath Ledger's Joker is probably the best.

Heath Ledger, mainly because I was more drawn to his side of the Joker than Jack's.
 
I want to say Nicholson, because I grew up watching the 1989 Batman over an over, but, if hypothetically, I'd watched them both for the first time on the same day, I'd think Ledger was better.

I think Ledger's performance suited the movie very well, but it is a little darker than I'd imagine the Joker to be.

My answer, in short is Nicholson, but only because I can't handle change :p
