A Final Fantasy writer has boldly proclaimed that the release of Apple’s iPad heralds the end of Nintendo’s dominance of portable gaming, whilst even Square Enix’s CEO seems to have experienced some sort of iPad imparted epiphany…

Game developer/writer Masato Kato, heavily involved with such esteemed titles as Chrono Trigger, Xenogears and Final Fantasy VII/XI, tweets that the iPad heralds the destruction of Nintendo and the DS:

With the release of the iPad, the age of Nintendo has really come to an end, hasn’t it? Though they’ve been digging their own grave with the DS and Wii for some time.
That there are as yet no games of note on the platform does not seem to bother him; nor does the Apple leadership’s well established contempt for gaming and general failure to acheive success in the gaming market seem to weight on his mind.

Apple products seem to have a particularly acute effect on Japanese gadget fans, perhaps a result of their design appealing to commonly held Japanese sensibilities – possibly this factors in to his evident excitement.

Meanwhile, Square Enix CEO Wada has been playing with his newly acquired iPad and reports that he too is greatly enthused by the device:

I’ve been using it since this morning. Damn…

[...]

It has a lot of business functionality, but what really gets me are the possibilities. I was hooked in an instant. This is a platform. I think a lot of good things will come from this.
Fortunately, he seems not yet to have tried visiting many of his company’s game sites with the device.

Of course, that his company has just released two iPad apps would have nothing to do with his new found enthusiasm for the device – it is sheer coincidence that the two events came within days of each other.

That's the funniest thing I've read in a while, iPad destroy Nintendo? Whatever. The iPad is just an overpriced piece of crap that even the cheapest of notebooks are better than. The iPad won't sell the 130 million units that the DS has. Get this dick off twitter.

Lmao, the iPad's just a mini laptop--a supposedly innovative one but still a laptop nonetheless. I highly doubt that it could withstand the sheer graphical capabilities of a Nintendo game, look at all of the damn features they're implementing on it . . . instant messaging, internet, text messaging, map features, video, chat, photo storage, and all of this on 3G of wireless memory. Not to mention the 9.7 inch LED backlit screen.

Is it overpriced? Yeah to me it is, starting at $499. That's way too much money.

Nintendo? This is a game company powerhouse. It's up there with SONY and Sega (well Sega's definitely lost its "it" factor, so scratch this one off). There's no way that Apple's iPad--an overpriced, overhyped, over-featured (yes, it has WAY too much stuff to me) could touch the simple charm of a next-gen console like say the Wii. The Wii has entertainment value (i.e.: family friendly, good variety of high-quality games, very versatile system, etc.) was significantly lower in pricing than say its other competitors' systems ($250 or more), and it was just cool.

I mean that wrist band attached Wii remote and the nunchaku-remotes . . . heaven. Besides the fact that one manufactures game consoles and has one of the most famous selection of gaming mascots ever . . . Mario, Link, etc. Apple's just known for oh let's see iPod models and their Macs (which are eh to me) and now this iPhone and iPad business.

No thanks. I <3 Nintendo too much. They will be around for a long, long, long time. Miyamoto and co. know what the heck they're doing.

lolwat

The iPad isn't a phone, it's just a laptop minus a keyboard. Hardly a phone.

I'll probably end up getting an iPad one day, maybe after they've been out a little while long, worked out the kinks and dropped in price, but not for this supposed gaming revolution.

And really, where the eff is SE coming up with this? Apple's been trying to implement games an shit on their products since the iPod videos... and it's just not working out for them. It's not a gaming platform, it's something more. And they need to accept that.

Not a chance. At least not any time soon unless they completely devote a console section to gaming. Honestly, i really hate the hype with the apple products. My brother was a complete douchebag and was ranting on about how the iphone has already chomped off a large portion of DS market. I was fuming in the sense that he has no business orientation and idea, that it doesnt happen in two or three years, especially against a monster like nintendo.

If a product splits itself and touches on multiple areas, especially portable devices, then there will not be one section that excels brilliantly (Unless its a fat console like PS3 and Xbox360. In that case, size and weight isnt too much of an issue as its going to stay in the house anyway). If they are going to at the very least get on par with the DS, then they need to add hardware that can do that, which equates to extra weight and size to the ipad.

TBH, i hate the idea of purely using a touchscreen for game. I hate my screen smudged and dirty, plus sometimes, its just better to use the d pad and the buttons. At least you wont accidently touch the screen and die or something.

But I don't think this touch pad / computer will surpass the ds and the wii.
It wont even come close to Wii. The Wii was up there with sales with the other two consoles. I doubt it'll kill off DS, let alone compete with the wii

...is he high?
No really, this is stupid. The iPad's already trying too hard to be too much, such that it's really just a whole lotta nothing (with an obscene price tag). It's already failing at what it's trying to be, trying to add "game console" to that will probably just fall flat on its butt. The iPad's release heralds the end of nothing. (Of course, in a perfect world, it would herald the end of Apple, since it sucks. In the real world, the die-hard Apple fanatics sadly prevent that.)

Microsoft was able to get into the gaming market, but I can't see Apple doing the same - even if they try to focus on the handheld aspect with i-things :hmmm:

I think the reason for microsoft was that it had a really good reputation and it went in at a good time. It was when PS2 purchase began to stabilise and the gamecube flopped. So it was easy to establish a market. For the Ipad, its a bad time to jump in. The DS is going strong and the PSP seems to be starting to recover from the GO incident. They'd be facing huge competition, especially if its gaming qualities and games come out below the PSP and DS. If that happens, then they have shot themselves in the foot in the handheld gaming sector.

...this is just further evidence that Square Enix writers are going utterly senile.

Have they seen the sales of the Wii and DS? And some overpriced piece of garbage is supposed to suddenly make families and gamers all over the world think "Hang on, this is shit. I'm going to sell it and get an iPad instead"?

If the Wii and DS have proved anything, it is that Nintendo should never be underestimated. If the iPad proves to be popular (something I find highly unlikely unless it drops considerably in price) then Nintendo will simply surpass it with their next console. And, after the success of the Wii, millions of people will buy it. Nintendo isn't finished, not by a long shot.

Honestly, what sheer and utter stupidity...

Especially with the new 3d DS in line. (or was that just pure rumour?)

DS already has the touch screen down to pat. If Ipad wants to duke it out with them, then they have a long way to go and churn out a 3D ipad at the same time 3D DS comes out.

Another day, another stupid remark from someone at Square Enix.

Let's look at Nintendo's status. Okay, the Wii and the DS have a LOT of garbage games in their repertoires, but you can't argue against the enormous sales figures they have had. The DS outsold the PSP tremendously. I'm not going to talk about the Wii because we're on about portable gaming consoles at the moment. The iPad, destroy Nintendo with the dominance of the DS under its belt? Bullshit.

About 80% of the games you can have on the iPad will most likely be crap anyway. The iPad itself is stupidly overpriced in the UK with VAT or some crap like that bolted on. It's still overpriced across the world. The DS was designed purely to be a gaming machine. The iPad was designed to be well, everything. Not everyone is going to jump up and suddenly get games on their iPads. Plus, when I look at the iPad, I see its touchscreen being only good for minigames.

I'm pretty sure we can all agree that Square and Apple got some deal going on, so it makes sense to suddenly hear how awesome the iPad and iPhones really are. Heck, that might explain way back how S-E was able to give out 8GB iPhones for free as members rewards.

But taking a shot at Nintendo was a very, very stupid thing to do. Quite a few of S-E's best sellers are on the DS alone. DragonQuest, Final Fantasy, TWEWY, etc

Someones chatting out of his arse a bit. :ffs: Even though Sony and Microsoft are doing better than Nintendo, they still have their exclusives that will always sell, Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, hell I could go on, that I can't see Sony or Microsoft getting on their systems any time soon. You keep hearing about how grand Sony and Microsoft are, so it's easy to forget that Nintendo still has its dedicated fanbase, and not to mention the fact that it is the cheapest option. We also have the fact that Wii is more popular for offline multiplayer games than PS3 or 360, and it is still use as a group activity.

The PSP is still a better gaming handheld than the DS, and Sony isn't dominating the market (yet). Perhaps there's more to gaining a fan base in the gaming market than simply having a more powerful machine.

No no this will not hppen. I went to see the Ipad today and its prett frickin cool but its not gonna destroy the like sof Mario Pokemon and Zelda :ffs: But I will admit games would fir perfectly on it. But it doesn\t feel the same :gasp:

i gotta admit.............final fantasy would look good on the ipad........................but really who cares if ipad will destroy nintendo? if it does then its just a better than nintendo.

Apple would maybe have a chance, if they actually gave it some thought and game up with it's own, pure gaming system. Make something that's sole purpose is gaming, not take something that's about reading, pictures, music, videos, etc... and give it some games.

Apple will probably do this eventually, I reckon. They'll call it the iGame. :monster:

Wow that guy's attitude makes me not want to buy and iPAD <.<.

But everything else has already been said. There is no way it will destroy Nintendo. I can imagine most of the games being crap because Square Enix has been a disappointment to me these last few years. (I liked Squaresoft much better)
