So, it's that awful time of the year again, when, for me at least, hay fever hits and makes me feel awful. Is anyone else getting a dose of it, how bad is it, and how do you cope?

Nice hot tea always helps me. I haven't had it for quite some time though...
Laying down or being active and blowing your nose frequently (trust me, this one helps a lot) always were good for me. Also, playing video games takes up so much of your attention, that you forget about how crappy you're feeling, try giving that a try.

:hmmm: well to start off a nice hot bath to cool off :ryan:, at least I find that to be very relaxing. also sleeping helps with the healing process, and i would think just getting fluids and soup helps. However, i am with Oblivion on this one--hot tea :jess:. It always gets the job done :D.

It seems like every cunt has it these days, thus far, I'm still hayfever free

I seem to have it very mild this year, barring the occasional sneeze i'm relatively Hay Fever free.

And I have to go through some decent sized grassy areas, so I must be doing well :ryan:

I don't have it either Kel. But, the weather pressure has an effect on my sinuses and that's annoying. If it's high pressure it sometimes feels like I've got a tightening band around my head, and that gets annoying.
My advice from a friend that's got hayfever is also hot tea... maybe that really does work :lew:

One day Kelly, karma will make you eat those words!

With me, hayfever is either really awful, or not a problem at all. This year is looking like one of those really awful years. Without taking a hayfever tablet, I have a runny nose, constant sneezing, watering eyes... the works.

Although, the Asda hayfever tablets are miracle workers, one of them a day, and I'm golden.

-High fives-

Same here. I know a few people are are down in the dumps and sick, yet I haven't been sick in AGES. So I'm completely free of any sickness and quite happy with myself... (As always.) :griin:

Hayfever only affects me nasally - in fact right now I feel like wanting to blow my nose continuously. I haven't sneezed yet though, so hayfever isn't affecting me as badly as it did last year. In fact, anything can make my nose lousy nowadays, including dust allergies and weather pressure.

I normally take tablets to deal with hayfever. They mostly work - particularly if it involves me going to sleep soon afterwards to heal a bit. During the day, I (slightly strangely) need to be in a cool room or environment and perhaps drink a hot beverage - tea or coffee, as well.

Sometimes it just goes away and I naturally feel better after a while. Stupid immune system overreacting to pollen is all it is.

This year has been a really bad one for me, one of the worst that I remember for a VERY long time! I take tablets as early as April ad this year they have done sweet fanny adams for me. Yesterday it got THAT bad, I wanted to gouge my eye out! It was watering like every 30 minutes and when it stopped it would just leave a really bad stinging sensation. I crawled into bed around 9ish and before I went to bed my eye was red raw, it also kept me up ALL night last night

My kind of thread: relevant to me and Pharmacy-related!

Drinks and "heat to cool off" honestly don't sound like the best treatments tbh. :wacky:

I can assuredly say antihistamines are by far more effective. They work not by blocking histamine (since it's necessary for the immune system) but by beating them to the binding sites in cells that cause the immune response (sneezing, watery eyes etc) and don't produce the same symptoms. You're better off taking newer antihistamines (e.g. loratadine [found in Clarytin/Boots Non-Drowsy Hayfever Relief] or ceterizine hydrochloride [found in Piriteze, Zirtek, Boots Hayfever Relief]) because they're much less likely to cause drowsiness than other, older tablets (e.g. chloramphenamine [found in Piriton] or acrivastine [Benadryl] or promethazine [in Phenergan]) and therefore better for day-to-day tasks, exams, driving, etc. They're only one-a-day rather than three-to-four-a-day, too. They'll help with itching, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and even insect bites and prickly heat. You might have to try one or two before you find the most effective tablet for you, though (I find cetirizine quite good)

Steroidal nasal sprays (18+ only) reduce the inflammation of the nasal tissue therefore unblocking your nose. Flixonase (2 sprays in each nostril in the morning) or Beconase (2 sprays morning and night) are your best bets there.

Sodium cromoglicate 2% eye drops are great for the eye symptoms and tend to work quite fast. Cheapest ones right now are Opticrom, or Boots Allergy Eye Drops when that offer ends but you can get them all cheaper on prescription (even if you pay for them), and if you don't then do me a favour and ask at your pharmacy about eMAS (electronic Minor Ailments Service) for free medicine!

There's something called Haymax that's a balm that you can put around your nose to trap pollen before it goes it but healthcare consultants tend to compare it to vaseline at 6x the cost...

Nasaleze is a new product I've been hearing about, it's not in my store yet so I only know what I've read but it apparently works by making an artificial mucus in the nose that blocks pollen from getting in to the immune system and therefore stops you from initiating an allergic response in the first place. I'm not sure about how genuine that claim is, though.

There's also immunotherapy injections that desensitise you to pollen over time but you need to speak to your GP about that.

Lesson over...

You really don't understand how frustrating and horrible it is until you come down with it. You can develop it at any time in life, so just watch your back/nose. :wacky:

I've got away the last few years without being as bad as before but this year has me crippled, I can't do anything until my tablets kick in (I'm using cetirizine). I totally sympathise with people who still have to do exams at the peak of hayfever season.

At least Il be able to sleep when I'm knocked out on anti-whatsists :griin:

Karma bites me in the arse even when I'm nice to folk, so I'l laugh at other peoples misfortunes :wacky: and if I ever get hayfever (mother has still never had it, so I reckon Im safe :ryan:)then I wont tell no cunt anyway :wacky:

Hahahaha, neither of them have any of the above :wacky:

In fact, none of us have any allergies at all, as far as I'm aware :8F:

/rolls around in cut grass and flings it at hay fever sufferers for good measure

Gee thanks Kelly!

A few years ago, just looking at cut grass through a window was enough to set me off sneezing!

That would actually drive me insane - you all can keep your hay fever

How the fuck can you enjoy Summer and outside

My childhood would have been RUINED where I lived.

I can't enjoy Summer which is why I prefer Winter :mokken:

Are you sure you don't want my hayfever just for a day? So you can see what you are missing :D

I'm not allergic to many things (if any at all) I know when I was younger the doc said I was free. :ryan: I remember being in the doc's office sitting and waiting for my sister 'cause, she had it bad and had to get like shitloads of shots :wacky:

Lucky me.

I'm Hay-Fever free :griin:
