People seem to really hate Hope in this game, and I can see why to an extent, but I don't get how they can later on. In my opinion, Hope has some of the best character development in the game.

Pre Chapter 7 I can understand. He's driven by revenge and anger and he can seem quite bratty and immature. His only desire is
revenge on Snow for killing his mother, as he sees it

But after Chapter 7, when he overcomes his anger and talks to Snow, I think he starts to really mature and develop as a character. He begins to gain courage to participate in battle. He
runs right out and battles that Havoc warship at the end of Chapter 7
when he was terrified by the Manasvin Warmech in Chapter 3.

Not only that, but when he
gets afraid during Chapter 11, it's not for purely selfish means. He genuinely worries about the others and that he will only hold them back, and faces Alexander, and later, Barthandelus and Orphan, without the whining he would have given us before Chapter 7. And he's no longer ashamed and judgmental of his l'cie brand and status.

I don't really see how anyone can call him a brat after his development.

My dislike for him does not stem from his character in the story. Because I tend to stick with Lightning, Fang, and Hope until the post-game stuff (and even after...usually because I'm too lazy to change the party up), and Hope tends to fail at healing...a lot. My Hope always tend to stand right next to Sentinal Fang, so any AoE attacks used on her hit Hope, and it seems like he becomes slightly retarded in the middle of battle. Sometimes it seems like he doesn't heal the right people, or he'll just stand there with his boomerang up his ass. So yeah, I usually end up cursing Hope to no end.

Are you sure hatred is the right word?

Thats seems a bit strong, I have no particular feeling about his character at all, I will say he is a little like Vaan in appearance which is annoying, and he wears Tidus's jacket but that is all I think about him.

I never use him i battle except when you have to, Hope just lacks the things I look for
in a party member despite his statistical advantage towards higher magic he has nothing the other dont represent.

Ineffectual on my part, but 7 chapters of being a whingy little bitch may put alot of people of?

I probably have said in other threads that I've been a little bit irritated at times, and maybe even that I hated him (not sure), but I don't really despise him, I just prefer other characters.

I appreciate what they were doing with him, and I personally thought that his storyline was quite strong, and the
anger at Snow followed by getting over it and befriending Snow
storyline was quite well done.

I'm not a fan of a number of things regarding Hope:
His appearance. It was Vaan with a boomerang, though the costume looked like a normal kid and nothing special. Vaan at least (while not pleasing to the eye for many) had a costume design that was ok and semi-inventive. Hope just looked to me as if he could have been any character model, though perhaps that again is what they were going for; to present Hope as the story of one ordinary teenager, but representing everyone who may have had similar stories.

His whining. Now I didn't mind this really, but I think that they probably overdid it a little bit. I know that he changed throughout the game, but he still seemed to speak in very much the same way, and I don't blame the voice actor here, I just feel that he sounded deeply tormented and depressed a lot of the time. I'd have liked it more if he'd picked up a bit of
Snow's attitude (not so much the cockiness, but his positivity). I guess he did a bit, but I think that they could have taken that further towards the end of the game. It would have been quite cool to have seen him looking as if he was going to grow up to be just like Snow, as that would have been a great conclusion for both of their characters. From hating Snow he would then be seen to admire him and even see him
as an older brother or father figure.

The final thing that I can think of is his usefulness in battle. He was always by far the weakest character in my party. I appreciate that he's useful for magic and such but the lack of HP makes it almost unbearable to use him as a party member, and impossible to have him as a party leader in tough battles.

Another reason outside of being a whiney bitch: Why can't he just man up and confront snow right away and get that stupid story line over with -why does it take most of the game?

Hope actually became more annoying for me towards the end of the game, but I didn't "hate" him.

I don't understand how the majority of people favour him as a healer over Vanille and a Synergist over Sazh. These two are head and shoulders above Hope in these categories, so I never had Hope in my party because of this. He always got KO'd before he could even attempt any healing or buffs when my party was in trouble, that and plus the emo bollocks he came out with at almost every cut scene was off-putting to say the least.

Okay so I understand the whining and all but Hope was very useful to me in battle. For some reason Sazh's character was my overall weakest stat attack wise. Hope had strong magic which I look for in support and when you master synergist moves there's really no need for Sazh anymore. His Eidolon, when looking at the stats when everyone was maxed, I found that it was the strongest in attack overall which made since because of what others said during his Eidolon fight.

I can see where he is annoying as his speeches really began to bug me alot. I liked him more when he was depressed to be honest; he didn't talk as much. After chapter 7 it's all these annoying inspirational speeches he's spilling out left and right. I really think they could have given some of his parts to sombody else.

Tell me about it! I hated that the most!

I did hate Hope up until Ch.7, but I did find him to be a good Synergist. But nothing more. Even though his magic was potent, in using him as a Medic, he would die before I could get healed. I would then switch to Vanille, but though she could hold her own, she was slow to heal the party. So I had no choice but to use Hope.

After a while, I just said eff it and leveled up other members so that they could become Medics themselves.

Another reason why I missed having control of the entire party. That was rather inconvenient having to trust the AI.

But on another note, did anyone like Hope's Eidolon? I thought he was OK.

I don't dislike him at all, Hope is one of my favourite XIII characters.

However, as you've mentioned pre chapter 7 the way he behaved did irk me. Considering the strange and new found situation that he was in though, you can sympathise somewhat.

After that though he just gets better and better i'd say, he's the most potent spellcaster in the game, Vanille's second to him by about 200 mag I think and apart from that Alexander (or at least, my Alexander) has the best Eidolon stats in the game, Hecatonchier coming second.

So I like him in battle, and plot wise I really start to like him after the part where
he finally realises and admits what he did was stupid, so he decides to carry on and stop blaming Snow for his mother's death.

I can't really understand where all the hate comes from though, I find him to be a great character.

To be honest Hope had one of the stronger stories in the game, I know it was sort of weak at the beginning, but it picked up later on. He showed good progression because after all he was the only kid really. I mean Vanille was a bit more mature even if her voice was small. He had a lot to forgive about Snow and overcoming it was his biggest challenge.

Around chapter 11 he figures out more about the others and himself in general and no longer was out for revenge. I think he sees Light as an older sister/harsh around the edges mother. Then later on sees snow as more of a bigger goofy bro. Hope turns out to be the most mature along side Light and Fang at the end. He takes all that he had to go through and uses it against the Fal'ci.

Hope honestly was pretty bad in battle till he was around lvl 8 in the crystalarium (whatever lvl had the Haste). I mean as a synergist he could cast the basic stuff, but until all the En- spells and such.. I felt he was only used as a healer/ravager. He was a great Ravager though.. I liked him around chapter 11-12 he evolved into an entirely new character with his new abilities.

The only character I thought was a bit lacking was Sazh. The only thing had going for him was his son really, and you don't figure that out till later anyway.

My dislike for Hope comes from not wanting to play as a child. Maybe if I was 14 again...

In saying that, I DO use him. A lot. Its pretty hard not to when hes easily one of the games best characters battle wise. I use all the characters bar Sazh, and even then I use Sazh when grinding CP.

I never had a problem with Hope. For a child character in an FF game, he had a lot of development as opposed to just being there to be cute. I thought he had the best character development in the game. And I could understand his anger after his mother dies.

Ok, so pre chapter 7 he may have been a little annoying. But later, after he matures I thought he became quite likable.

Yeah, I can understand hope is still a kid so theres not much to expect from him. You cant just expect him to be stronger then lighting all of a sudden and as brave.

The whole him vs. Snow thing was pretty weird. Snow was a jerk at times, yet through part of the early story, Hope had to act like a bigger jerk. Perhaps I should feel sorry for him because his mother died, yet somehow I never cared because something was too digital and imaginary.

In all fairness to the Hope character
he watched his mother fall to her death
that would make anybody here emotional. And when you're emotional you can become irrational and even annoying so I understand that. What killed Hope for me as a character was his English voice actor. I don't know if his Japanese VA was any better but his English one certainly wasn't working out for him. You could tell he was trying to match the emotion going through Hope but it just didn't work IMO.

I don't hate Hope.
I intend to use all my characters in this game.I always have.

Most FF players are still young and have never lost someone they love.
So they believe it's ok to be critical of Hope.

For those of us who have been through such trauma we understand those emotions and are less critical and more accepting of Hope's obvious pain.

I don't hate Hope, but I don't really like him all that much, either. I get about his emotional condition in a majority of the game, but it grew annoying at times. He sure was useful for many points of the game, but really, his excessive wining gave me a headache. :rage:.

But,
his connection with Vanille made me like him a bit, but always a fan of LightningxHope 100%

I don't hate Hope he can be very annoying but his character does get better which was good cause I was getting sick of all the complaining. I get why Hope was complaining for half the game but I would have liked it if he had just confronted Snow at the start of the game it would have made the game better for me. Hope did help me out a lot in battle so even though he is annoying he is helpful.

I totally agree. But since Square games are usually good, I'll forgive them. I just hope they don't make a habit of carrying out this particular form of drama. It might have worked for 2D games, but in 3D they really need to do things a little more convincingly.

I just wish some of the writing was as good as the old games. With the technology they have now to make it where they don't have to limit conversations, there's not much excuse.

Hope just pissed me off at the begining of the game. I understood him but I viewed him as an encumberance until he matured a little, but by that point I just go tused to hating him. I can use him effectivly with lightning and fang, with that said I agree with his A.I. "Abnormalities". This problem Is something that seems to recure also with using vannile as the healer...THEY DON'T KNOW WHO TO HEAL! I can't say good or bad about lightning's healing 'cause I use her as party leader all the time. Anyways back to hopless. I nicknamed him hopelss 'cause if I'm not using him as leader when he's healing he might as well be a sentinal just sitting in place trying to pull his boomerang out of his ass. Like literally at the beginning of the game that's where his boomerang came from, His ass. I swear that's where his head is half the time.
