Girls on online games.

I generally play online games for my computer, leaving my major system games for single player.

Other than WoW (I have friends who play on the same server and a few are girls; we all hang out and stuff), I haven't seen/heard a single female player. Not in CoD4, not in Battlefield 2, not in Starwars Battlefront 2, not in TF2, not in L4D, not in anything, really.

The lack of women online has kind of created an interesting male atmosphere, where talk is.......................lulz, for lack of a better word.

I met quite a few girls playing Halo 3 online. Gosh that game is fucking popular XD. Anyways yeah I was sure they were girls cause they even had headsets and were talking. But once I was in a match. This guy was shouting come here you slut ima blow your head off with my fucking hell of a shotgun. Then she was like no and she sniped him in the head. The guy started screaming wtf girls should not be on hALO! Halo is mens only! Omg when I heard that I was dieing of laughter XD. I do have some jap girls on my friends list though. So yeah There all on halo 3 and psn. Wait till Halo reach comes out. What a riot people will be on in that game.

I'm glad you mentioned that...now that I think of it, I remember quite a few japanese girls playing on Warhawk =X Didn't think of it till I read that, given that they were speaking a different language and all...

I stick primarily to Halo 3 for my online gaming needs. Encountering a female player is a rarity (at least one who's willing to subject herself to harrassment by using a microphone).

If I happened to be a girl, there's no WAY I'd use a microphone. The same thing always happens. Players harrass the poor soul as they make rude comments, and ignore in-game objectives to seek out "the girl" in the game. It's pathetic.

So while I get the feeling that plenty of girls play online video games, I believe that most of them wisely keep to themselves.

Im an online girl gamer lol. Ive only got 1 actual girl on my XBox friends list, the rest are guys. I only know 3 female gamers in real life and sadly they dont have online access. Its a pain when you tell a guy youre a gamer, they either think you like girly games, if they excist or youre bullshitting them!!

Ive been a gamer from a very young age and Im always met with those responses. I dont mind dating guys who play computer games either. But all my past partners always think Im watching them play or help out just to make them happy.

Regarding online games, I would say females is rarity simply because of the genre most online games have, ie. FPS such as CoD:MW/MW2 or sport. The latter you're less likely to find a female imo. Overall, I think there is quite a lot of female gamers, or so Playstation Home would suggest as amongst the men who pretend to be women, there are quite a few genuine females on it. The online game genre is more limited to males.

In the SB we were discussing how rare it is to see a real girl on online games on consoles such as the PS3, Xbox etc.

Loads roam about on Playstation Home... But they are almost always men dressing up to fulfil their fantasies of pulling and making text-love to other men.

Ok dude you have just ruined my home experience lol but i do know a few girls who play games but some games i like most of the girl i know that play games are playing singstar (i don't in public only in the shower).

Theres alot of females that play WoW believe it or not but most of them are married with kids. Though there was one super hot chick that was in my guild "Dirty Deeds" and she talked all the time over vent during raids. We also post pics of everyone on the guild website so everyone knew each other. But are guild disbanned and everyone went to different guilds.
I also noticed a few playing Shadowrun and every guy on there worshipped her XD she was pretty damn good.

Eh, Im a WoW female gamer and Im not married and have kids ... And no its not because Im unattractive lol.

Honestly I find female gamers to be quite hot! Why? because they at least have their best interests at heart when playing games .. not just because it is a fad, but because they really enjoy doing it.

I just hate though when girls are trying to have fun with guys, and guys take it upon themselves to hit on them just because he thinks they have similar interests at heart.

Heck the last thing I want is a girl hitting on me in an awkward way when I'm shooting some zombies, locusts or etc..

So yea.. that's why I take people under my "wing" and throw you in a friend circuit where I know most guys are cool as balls.

Anyway.. that's my spheal.

Can I ask why my post was deleted? It wasnt spammy, I posted it to prove a point agaisnt what SkyRav had said about girl gamers. I dont get why it was deleted ...

Ive always had an interest in games, but I know 1 or 2 girls who have pretended to have an interest in Time Crisis or Gears of War to impress a guy, then when they have to play the game with them, its so damn funny :D

I don't exactly care about the gender of the other party when I play online games. I mean, in fact, I can't even be certain if the other person behind the screen is really a girl s/he claims to be. Most of the time, I hear from friends how the pretend to be girls to become GF- short for Girlfriend- with some online guy and get those guys to buy them some really expensive items.

I don't exactly trust them, anyway. It sounds retarded too. Imagine the girl comes up to you and asks. "Hey, can I be your GF?"

Just leaves me with nothing to say, honestly. Nevertheless, regarding the matter in general, I think it makes little difference. Girls are still human anyway, just another person to play with.

While I do know my fair share of real girls on MMO's, I'll admit that I actually do play as a girl on a lot of MMO's. Why, you ask?

Two words: Free stuff.

That's right, you'll see a lot of guys just run up to you and give you some over leveled stuff that you can use because they want to get in your pants. There was this once case in an MMO that I played where I got 500k gold (lot of money in that game) in less than 2 hours.

Another reason why I do it is because in a lot of MMO's the male models look to muscular and boxy looking. It's hard to be a mage when it looks like you should be wielding a two handed sword.

Now, when I start making friends in the game I'm quick to tell them that I'm actually male, so they don't get any ideas. My girlfriend didn't know what to say about it, but after a while, she didn't really care anymore, and started playing the MMO's with me. (Also as a female) Then I started jokingly saying that we were a lesbian couple.

In a few MMO's the classes were actualy gender forced. So if I wanted to play as a mage, I had to be female. (I guess that's what actually got me into the idea. At first I would have never imagined playing as a female.)

All in all, it's all in good fun for me. I can't say that I really care what anyone's opinion on it is. As long as I'm having fun, and I'm not some weird pedo on the internet, why the hell should anyone stop me?

No offense to you, and I'm sure you are a good person.. but let me honest. That's lame. I understand if people are trying to apply gender roles to their characters based off of abilities. (Healer = Women..blah blah) I mean its called stereotyping for a reason, but what you are saying is you are exploiting the system and taking short cuts in MMO's.

Might as well buy your accounts on ebay for all that matters. I mean I have actually met quite a few gay men who play female characters, and only when they feel comfortable they admit it. I have never played a female character yet without being a joke, I just don't see the point. If I'm going to be a rogue, I want to look as rough as possible. If I'm going to be a tanking class, well I'm going to look like a burly man. Caster/Ranged I try to tattoo my character up a bunch and make him look mystical or alien like.

I don't mind men playing female characters, but when they use it like you are saying kind of makes me sick. Again I have met quite a bit of legit female gamers, midnight and I use to stay up until 3-4 players with a group of 4 to 5 girls kicking eachother in the gonads (if they had them) in halo or left 4 dead. It's all in good fun, and they know like hell I won't hit on them since I have my own gig in real life.

No offense to you,
None taken.

and I'm sure you are a good person.. but let me honest. That's lame.
I've never considered myself to be a good person. Yes, most people will view it as lame. That's their opinion, and if they view it that way, then it isn't my problem.

but what you are saying is you are exploiting the system and taking short cuts in MMO's.
Exploiting the system: No. Exploiting the players: Yes. It could easily be seen as taking a short cut, but it isn't like I go around asking for free stuff. They walk up, and they give it to me, and I take it. If they're going to be that naive, then that's their problem.

Might as well buy your accounts on ebay for all that matters.
I could never do that. Then I wouldn't get to pick what my character's name is, or what he/she looks like. The last thing I want is to get stuck with a name like "Ultimate pker" or some crap like that. Besides, I wouldn't get the same sense of satisfaction that I normally get by leveling up my own character.

I don't mind men playing female characters, but when they use it like you are saying kind of makes me sick.
Maybe I put a little too much emphasis on the free stuff. Sure, getting free stuff from unsuspecting desperate men is a plus because I can save my money on more important things. Yet, that's not the main reason, or the only reason. As I said before:

Another reason why I do it is because in a lot of MMO's the male models look to muscular and boxy looking. It's hard to be a mage when it looks like you should be wielding a two handed sword.
That's one of my main reasons. That drives me up a wall. There are also games that require you to be a certain gender if you want to be a certain class. Like Mage = Girl. I played a few games like that and now I'm just used to it.

Also, I can come up with much better female character names than male character names. (Especially if I'm playing as a female elf.)

Every now and then I'll play as a male. It really doesn't matter to me, but like I said, after playing a few MMO's in a row that required you to be female for certain classes, it just stuck with me.

Thank you for the insight. It was nice getting someone else's opinion on the subject.

Yea, and sorry I don't mean to come across as harsh, but I know quite a bit of people in the MMO environment who try to keep it legit, even if it is just a game. I mean I see beggers all the time on alt female characters and I would just put them on ignore before giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I mean if I'm leveling up along side them, male/female or whatever, if they are playing a female/male character most likely I'll help them out. Maybe it goes back to my work ethics, whenever I have performed short cuts it always comes back to bite me in the arse. I know not everyone has the same view as me or is like me in any way, but from an unbiased stand point..

You gotta look at the whole. MMO's are communities so to speak. Most people actually meet people that they play with in real life, a little like final fantasy forums.. so its the younger gaming generation that I'm seeing trying to get to a certain level as fast as possible as well as do end game material as fast as possible at the expense of everyone else. (Guild hoppers and such).

To make this thread relative to the OP, this is actually a big problem with female players too. 20-50% of the time, if you are a female player you are woo'ed by kids your age, older men quite frequently. There is no real way to control this, other than sticking to a designated group of people who you trust.. or just ignoring every male out there. Some girls are subjected to play as male characters, because they know they won't be hit on or won't be suspected as female gamers..

I've heard this many times from girls I have played with.. guys are way to aggressive to female gamers. If you are a girl, I tell you this, don't play halo 3. Do I need to say more?

My ex got his arse handed back to him by a 15 year old girl on Halo 3. I nearly wet myself, I was so chuffed he had been beaten by a girl gamer :-) His best friend was all "I let her win cause she was a kid and a girl!" Nah, you got whipped by a 15 year old girl on a game you claim to be a master at rofl!

I'm just going to refer to the OP here and mention some other topical things on the way. Please bear with me, I'm sorry it's a long post.

First, I think it is necessary to look at the number of girl gamers in general, not just those online. I can tell you, we girl gamers are a rarity. Though this is a trend that is gradually changing, the fact remains that they are few and far in between.

To show just how rare we are, let me give you this true example: I was invited by one of my friends to his graduation party. I was the only girl invited. This is because I'm a gamer, and the main entertainment for the evening would be playing Halo 3 against each other on Xbox Live.

(I must interject here that I was killed a LOT. When it comes to FPS games, I'm alllll PC gamer. Give me a mouse and keyboard and I'll whoop your ass. Hand me a controller and I'll get stuck in the first corner I come to.)

While I wasn't that great, I knew the game, I enjoyed myself and every single guy there (including my friend who invited me) was absolutely fascinated that I (a girl!) could play this game, knew the lingo, and could even talk at length about them. I could have chosen any one of them as a boyfriend at that moment, and they wouldn't have argued. In fact, just last week, I overheard a classmate talking about Borderland, which just came out, and asked him how he liked it. (Glowing review, btw) We continued to chat about games and this guy just lit up like a Christmas tree, he was so delighted to find that I knew the gaming terrain. I get this reaction every single time when I start game-talk. I always get the vibe of delight and immediately followed by a 'wanna be my girlfriend' vibe as well. It goes to show how rare girl gamers are when a guy wants to initiate a bf/gf relationship on the first real discussion with the girl. (and let me tell you, that treatment is effing annoying!)

So, we're rare. Now, add to that subgroup another subgroup -- online girl gamers -- and you'll see a severe dillution in the gamer population. Not every girl gamer has access to the internet (SapphireStar said she knew 3 girl gamers but none had internet), or is interested in games that generally require the internet. Consider the games that need them, and what games girls tend to favor.

Like Halo and Diablo, for example. On Halo, you probably won't find a lot of girl gamers because (like me) they tire quickly of repetative 'boom-kill' style. It's a known fact that girls are a bit harder to entertain with games since they prefer games to have more depth than just running around and shooting your friend. I mean, I enjoy it quite a bit, but it does get somewhat dull after a while. Since a lot of online games are just boom-kills like Halo, and rarely does anyone want to go through the actual storyline while online, I don't think you'll find many girls there.

But go onto battle.net and you'll find a lot more girls there. Diablo has a whole different goal there -- you can do more than fight a friend but can actually go through the game with a friend. Girls tend to like more depth to their games (as a general rule) and play for plot not solely for the play itself.

As to why girls conceal their gender because when they do play these highly competitive games, the answer is simple: Thanks to a messed up society, guys can't handle defeat, especially at the hands of a girl.

I know this from experience. When a guy is killed by another guy, there's a curse, a promise of revenge, a carrying out of that promise, and the cycle continues. The whole point, though, is that it's all good-natured fun.

But when a girl kills a guy in a game, the good-natured fun swiftly turns into downright nastiness. That man now feels like he must prove his masculinity/badassness to his friends (who'll no doubt be chanting 'OMFG YOU GOT KILLED BY A GURL YOU SUCKZ!!!) by taking a savage revenge on that girl. Unlike with his male buddies, his defeat at her hands was a dire insult, not just a friendly taunt, so to speak. From that point on, he'll go out of his goddamn way to kill her, again, and again, and again, and again. He'll ignore everyone else and repeatedly kill her, often going so far as to spawn-kill so she doesn't have a chance to get away. That's also when the sexist, foul comments start to flow. Sometimes, the offended man will get his friends into the action against her.

The game has now lost all appeal. What was once a friendly competition has become a nasty cluster-rape bent on demeaning the one girl gamer and proving her inferior.

Why put up with that shit? It's far easier just to let them assume you're a guy and not go through that hassle.

Like I said, I speak from experience. It is that twisted and nasty. Almost without fail.

My question is, how often have you seen girls play online games? I know they do, but it really isn't that common in my experience.

For every 8-9 guys in my standard Raid Group, there are 1-2 females. It's a total circle jerk most of the time tbh :neomon:

But eh... in Warcraft I play a female Blood Elf Paladin, Rogue, and Death Knight coz blood elf bitches are kinda hot and look all evil and shit. It's the closest thing there is to the kind of characters I'm accustomed to and like.

also, female rogues make the bestest ninjas and male blood elves do gay 2h weapon swings with maces, axes, and swords.

I have a male blood elf twink pally on skullcrusher, but I only use him to dance on mailboxes all nekkid like... I sometimes also like to take long walks on sunstrider isle, punch the crap out of mana wyrms, and hit on the first quest giver :neomon:

Sometimes i get lost at sea and my corpse disappears too... I guess it kinda sucks, but it probably serves me right for pissing off all those lv 1s and clogging up everyone's chat log around me by macroing /flirt to a button and pressing the crap out of it :awesome:

Um, I see a few girls online. But I mostly don't make it very obvious that I'm a girl online. Especially on Doom 3. Because than its like they'll make fun of me... or start hitting on me and it just ruins the whole experience >.<
