Yeah I've heard the stories that people like to say 'Did you know, there are more germs under your nails than on a toilet seat!'. At least I know people have not peed all over my fingers though.
Plus it is purely a nervous habit.
I always feel uneasy thinking about really long nails. I'm ok with the concept of people having long nails, for sometimes they do, but when I see them put pressure on the nail and see it straining (or coming off from the finger slightly) I feel very uneasy.

I am a guy, and I will have to say that girls with long fingernails look like witches. Seriously, I know that it may be aesthetically pleasing to some men, I however, find long finger nails on women (regardless if they are painted, acrylic, or not) disgusting. I prefer the beautifully trimmed nails in the kissable soft hands of a female.
Not only do they look hideous, but I have seen women that can't open things because of their nails; or type, or use a phone. Ridiculous.
