Girl Raped

-__- I got neg rep on my joke, and on the assumption I was JUSTIFYING this crap. I wasn't even remotely on the perpetrator's side. I was just saying that the bystander effect has a history of people doing NOTHING about situations tragic like this one. I guess since I'm gonna get misunderstood for psychological based responses, I'll keep my psychobabble to myself and post things like...

"That's so terrible! I don't see how any man or men could ever let that kind of evil and carnality overtake them so much that they freakin' PARTICIPATE! I see rape as punishable by something worse than jail time. Something that'll make them remember what they did to their victims for damned sure. I say physical punishment of some sort. Not time out. :ness: "

Is that better? Times to come, I won't joke or include any sort of psychological slant on anything this brutal. I'm sorry. :wgbl:

Honestly bud, I don't see anything wrong with what you wrote? Bystander effect is definitely a term, and people should realize you have no idea what would happen to your body if you saw that crap happening. First you probably would freeze up and bottle neck basically.

I mean its hard to come to grips with something unbelievable like that. I would like to think I would do the right thing, but honestly I would need to be in that situation. Your points were valid.. was your post deleted? am I missing something?

No, his post wasn't deleted and I honestly didn't see anything wrong with it either. In no way, shape or form was he trying to be negative, just posting something that is the factual truth. If I saw that shit happening, I don't even know what would go through my head. I'd be terrified, want to run, but my body would be frozen solid. Of course I'd want to get her help. Honestly though, you just don't know what would go through your mind until you witness it happening.

WOW . . . What the fuck is wrong with people these days? This has gone to another new level.

This kind of shit isn't exactly new. However it doesn't make the situation any less deplorable. I think what really disgusts me is the fact that this took place outside a high school at a dance. I'd like to think that kids are protected from this sort of shit at these kinds of events.

Anyway I think I should address this bystander effect business seen as this is really what the topic is about now. To my knowledge I believe that it was this incident which initially triggered investigation into the bystander effect:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitty_genovese#Psychological_research_prompted_by_the_murder

There have been several cases since then which have seemingly confirmed the idea of the bystander effect. I think there was a case that was posted here a little while ago about a man being hit by a car on a public street and no one came to help him (unfortunately I can't find the thread that it was posted in).

There have also been issues that have arisen with the Milgram experiment which presented the idea that normal people can commit horrible acts when they are placed under stress. Basically the point I'm getting at is that people may not behave as they normally would when they are placed under stress.

However, I think it is important to note a few things. It is unclear as to whether the people who watched were affiliated with the rapists. Obviously if they were friends with the rapists they probably wouldn't report this incident. So it is unclear whether this is actually the bystander effect in action or not. If the observers were gang members themselves I think this is more of a question for Social Psychology i.e how a group can effect an individual.

Kandy-Sugar quoting mean girls said:
There are two kinds of evil people in this world. Those who do evil things and those who see evil things and don't try to stop it.
I agree, but I think it is important to consider some of the psychological aspects which can come into play. I'd like to think that the observers felt some sort of guilt as the event was taking place and that their decisions to say nothing were out of cowardice. However I know that that may not have been the case. Either way, I hope the perpetrators get caught and the victim is able to recover from this.

With all honesty, people nowadays are just sick and brutal. They have no conscience, and doing something like this, and to a child even, proves that they don't, and it is absolutely unforgivable. Where have the moral values gone? Does respect for one's body no longer matter? I am very disgusted of people who could even imagine doing such an act. I am thankful that they did not kill the girl, although an incident like this will definitely change her life, and something as traumatizing as this would have made her wish she were dead. I really feel sorry for her, and for every single victim of rape.

I really don't understand why people engage on such sexual activities. I mean, I don't understand why they want to have it now, and with other people. I don't know about everyone else, but I think sex isn't something for individuals who have not had the privilege to wed yet. I know it's only natural to want to experience having sex, and I'm not sure if it's a psychological thing, but I still think it's dirty and disgusting for people to be having these kinds of sick fantasies.

I think the fact that three of them are 21, 19 and 17 sickens me alone, that's quite an age gap, especially when she's only in high school. What's worse is that ten took part from what I've just read, they all need their balls chopping off, including those that watched. It's disgusting.

17 isn't that much of an age gap, but I'm kind of barfing at 19+21... I don't even check out girls that age, and I'm almost 20. <_<

It's a very upsetting story, to say the least.

But damn man... that's so pathetic that this took place outside a fucking highschool for 2 goddamn hours. What kind of flaming retard doesn't walk outside the Gym for 2 hours to have a smoke break or something?

Jesus Christ.

Tsk. I'm speechless.

What's more appalling to me is, despite the fact this was all happening before their very eyes, the people witnessing this crime did not actually react to this, within the 2 hours. So what if there's the bystander effect? I had honestly thought that at least one would have reacted within the time, and even a slight movement may trigger further response from the group in general.

I think it's the first time I've heard of the bystander effect and I believe it exists. But I think, as much as it makes sense, that it could still be avoided. Two hours the rape lasted, and from that I think if you can't come to your senses in that very, very long period of time, it's as heavy a crime for the watchers as well.

I don't think I have to express my rage for the rapists themselves. Everyone here has made spot-on comments about them. They were fucking lunatics. Killing that girl would've hurt less. I can't imagine how painful the memory of it will be for her.

I'd like to point out though that I do think this was a very terrible, traumatizing event in that girls life, but there's something I think people could see here. It's not safe anywhere, and walking outside while drinking alcohol alone is definitely not a good idea. It's a magnet for trouble, and I think it could have been avoided in this way as well.

This is such a horrible and disgusting story. Rapists should be castrated and never allowed to rape/have sex again, it's the only suitable punishment. That and a lifetime behind bars/the death penalty! Scare any other evil scumbags that are thinking of doing the same thing. I heard a similar story to this that happened in the UK that sounds even worse. The girl was only 14 and forced to do sex acts, raped and beaten by boys as young as 13! What is so shocking about this case is the fact there were so many passers by that ignored what was happening to her! People that were just walking past them who could have easily stopped it! They didn't even call the police! It makes me feel so sick and angry.

We should be so careful in this world, especially us girls. If you ever think your parents are being overprotective this is why. So many girls nowadays make themselves a target by walking the streets on their own at night, or getting drunk, trusting men. That is so dangerous! Even so these kinds of attacks happen during the day and even if you are careful. Anything can happen to any one of us. The world is such a scary and evil place.

This is so shocking! It seems like today everyone's out of their mind and no one cares about it.Seriously...can a person be so insensitive?I bet the girl was screaming and crying during that, yet no one reacted?
But that's what you get when we have the TV with all kinds of movies and then the internet. There's no control anymore, and no one cares to control anyone for his own good. They only care to have fun,no matter what the cost.I believe that all rapists and watchers should go into jail, now they'll experience themselves how sweet rape really is.

I have a deep hatred toward rapist as a friend of mine was rapped and murdered when I was 17. I could not even start to tell you what I would have done to those rapists and the onlookers....... :yell:

The only rapes you really hear about are those where the rapists are caught or where the victim instigates a lawsuit against a third party who may be liable for such (maybe the rape happened on the victim's employer's premises or something). However, in all actuality things like this happen more often than not and usually the rapist is never apprehended. It's a sad fact but something that hasn't changed over time. Actually, it is probably a lot less prevalent today than it was decades ago.

aye, it is a dark side of humanity that society often turns it back on. 'don't get involved, protect yourself' is the mentality and when we see suffering, rarely does anyone want to do anything about it because 'someone else should do it, i'm too busy'. this, sad to say, happens everywhere and i don't feel that it will stop anytime soon.

there is an article on the web called 'the monkey sphere'. it details that humans are only capable of seeing 150 people as true humans; everyone else is 'the garbage man', 'the teacher', etc., or in this case, 'the girl' and not 'the person'. they saw her as a piece of meat.
