I searched far and low for a thread like it. I saw a rapture thread about the crazy fella who said the coming of christ yada yada. Though I don't exactly see fit to discuss religion. I just want to discuss your thoughts on:

1) Do you think the end of the world is peaking it's head around the corner?
2) What gives you the notion, if you said Yes.
3) Man or nature caused?
4) Are you afraid? Or willing it?

Number four, don't get fanatical if you will it, just state why and step away if you could.
 
1. :hmmm: I never really think about this bullshite end of the world stuff... so I guess now that I am thinking about it I think the world ending will probably eventually happen but I don't think it will be anytime soon and people who worry about it are wasting their time. I reckon if it did happen though it would be very fast and no one would feel anything anyway.

2. Just stuff you hear about on the news, I believe in science so I read a lot of the crud they say about how meteors and stuff travel so close to the earth and how the sun or a near by star will explode blah blah, like I said I don't think this will happen soon but I can't see why it might not happen in the distant future.

3. Nature caused. I don't really think man makes THAT big an impact on the planet to cause it to die/explode/whatever it is that causes it to end.

4. I'm not scared but I am certainly not willing it.

1. I don't think the end of the world is near but I do think the way of life as most of us know now will change dramatically. When I picture "end of the world" I see it as more of a cultural end of some sort. Like maybe something will happen that will force humans to live differently. I think something like that could occur at any moment.
2. Only the recent changes in weather gives me a notion that something will happen. Like that east coast earthquake in the US. That was a bit much for me.
3. I would honestly be more relieved if it were caused by man but I think something nature related. o.o
4. I'm kind of afraid but then again that's life. People die everyday from all sorts of things. I'm also kinda willing though...mostly because I'd take it as an adventure of survival through change.
 
When I think End of the World, I don't think of some sort of mystical meteor shower that will beautifully destroy us in some fantastical way for other planets and species to watch. Nor do I think that it has anything religious wise to do with it.. Jesus rising, The four Horsemen, the rapture raining down on us.. No, I think we'll be our own ending.

With the way that we are beginning to populate over the years, we will run ourselves into the ground. Back in 1950, we had an average of 2.5 billion people on the planet. In 1960, that jumped to 3 billion. 1975, 4 billion. 1987, 5 billion. 1999, 6 billion. And next year we're estimated to reach 7 billion. By 2050, we're estimated to reach 10 billion.

I think eventually, we will begin to run out of resources for all these people. Not to mention with the way pollution has increased over the years, I believe that with the two combined stats, we will essentially be living in our own filth by 2050.

However, I wager that we will go the route of contagion. Somehow, some sort of mutant virus will evolve just by combining two obscure blood samples together that turns out to be lethal. It'll spread like wildfire, and maybe we won't get so lucky. In Europe alone, the Black Plague took 10% of the entire population. Bird flu? Swine flu? Something big is happening, and we won't be ready for it.
 
What I tell people is... 1) So what if it is?

Would that be the worst to happen, I mean really? Me, I think the universe is infinite and we are just a small organism in this huge abyss. When religious people make a big deal about it, they always just pass the occasional "the end is near, get right with your maker".

If you are non religious, you really don't think about it. Some people just seem to wish it though. I think if the world was wiped clean of us human's sometimes, and were force to recreate, and evolve, I believe we would be better shape. Some might argue that human nature will always be our downfall, but I've definitely been able to see who has good morals, and bad morals.

We don't have enough space exploration, and with war and stuff, our scientific advancement is slowing down. If we keep going at it, globally, we'll never adapt.

I doubt the end of the world is coming any time soon, but I think maybe the end of the earth might. I think 90% of the population one day will be wiped out by our own hands. There is way too much hate. It extends further than religious context too.

Separately we are some of the weakest species around, but together.. we've been able to create, go places and evolve to a heightened degree. The trick is, we all need our individuality, we all need our own belief system, down to each individual thought.

Though since we have quite a bit of microcosms that are forcing people into molds of like minded people, there seems to be quite a bit of hate, for those who do not conform. It's not 1920 here in the States anymore, but still, 92 years ago, wasn't that long ago.

We make all these videos on space advancement, but we are too caught up with businesses and corporations, and war lords to actually get ahead in this world.

All I know is, I believe since 2003 we have stepped back in the US. I'm not sure about outside the US, though I think we have subtracted many years of fruition. I think we finally are addressing some sound ideas though. Such as Credit is back, and Lending under some context can be bad as well.

Honestly we as the human species need something to rock us, in order to come together, otherwise we'll all be small minded and fighting/killing for the stupidest ideas.

End of the world.. around the corner? I give it 20 years. We'll see something happen definitely between then and now, and I believe it will happen sooner then later if certain people are elected, here in the States.

As one of many, I don't think about this kind of stuff a lot, if I do at all, 'cept for with questions like these. Of course, I do think that the world will end sooner or later, with how things are going, I don't think it's gonna take as long as 500 years, but I'm not comfortable with saying that it might be in the next 50. Lets just say I don't expect it to happen when I'm still around, but I don't deny it can happen when I'm still around.

2) What gives you the notion, if you said Yes.

Everything. Where the world is going, where humanity is going. If you think about all the shit that has happened since the 90's even? And that was only 10 years ago. I remember how things were SO much easier then. I'm not just saying that because I was a kid then, thinking back NOW, money, people themselves, energy companies, everything was easier, happier and I HONESTLY think more environment friendlier.

3) Man or nature caused?

I think it was the first that caused it. People want too much, and things start to get taken for granted. I believe that just like us, the earth isn't some endless pit where you can keep sucking things out of, we die eventually, the rest probably will too.

4) Are you afraid? Or willing it?

I can't say I'm afraid, I don't think about it enough. (Ironic, 'cause I tend to over-think on everything.) I'm definitely not willing it either though. I really actually want for things to settle down more and become easier for those that actually need it, without having the daily stress of things that weren't there before. Eh. Oh well.
 
I'm not pessimistic (or insane) enough to be an apocalyptic prophet, but with the multitude of threats to international security, it's anyone guess when humanity will finally be screwed over - be it through its own machinations, or the cruel work of nature. Or perhaps a combination of both. I don't want to think about when it could happen, but it is startling when you realistically consider just how many ways there are for mankind to either be completely extinct, or mostly eradicated. Can it happen in our lifetime? Why not? Next couple of decades? We'll have to be extremely unlucky for that.

I suppose the most obvious thing comes to mind - the proliferation and use of nuclear weapons, and other weapons of mass destruction capable of destroying the surface of the planet dozens of times over - is most frightening. And it is. Will it happen anytime too soon? I'm optimistic enough to highly doubt that, what with the international system currently being as stable as it is and the supposed rogue powers unable to manage such feats on their own as it is. Is this naive? Well, is it naive to think that even the most rogue and sabre-rattling of regimes would have a common interest to the rest of us not to destroy the world multiple times over in the blink of a ten minutes?

I like Channy's population and environmental idea actually. Well, I don't like it in the sense that I would want it, but it's very plausible in that it could very well be the end of the vast majority of us. The world population's exponential growth has been alarming, and with it, so has our use of the planet's resources. Even water can very well run out. Only 2.5% of the world's water is freshwater, which isn't a lot when you think about what the world's population could be like in fifty years.

The depletion of resources with environmental change? We may see more and more arid wastelands in the global south, with vast influxes of migration seeking to escape these ruined, desert environments. As that happens, disease can quickly spread. Then, there's the possibility of alliance blocs set up with the aim of an armed struggle over the last remaining resources.

Could the armed conflict itself destroy every last one of us? Probably not on its own. The combination of such a conflict, diseases, lawlessness and downright poverty could see to it that mankind is dwindled down to miniscule numbers. Would it destroy every last bit of life on the planet? Doubt it, though partially depending on the nature of the conflict being waged. In fact, the eradication of most of the human populace would be a blessing to everyone else!

If I am starting to sound like a batty apocalyptic prophet, then oh well. I don't want to see any of this happen, but I was just considering what I believe to be one of the likeliest scenarios. Thank goodness I'm not as ridiculously irrational as the people who were running around chanting about the day of rapture and how most people will be condemned by God, while a select few just like them will be taken up to heaven for an eternity of perpetual bliss. Those people sounded like they wanted it to happen!

1. No I don't think its peaking this planet is probably just out of puberty atm, Planets tend to have a long lifespan, BUT I do think human beings are shortening this planets lifespan due to various idiot's causing crap like Pollution, Cutting Forests Down, Overpopulation. So if humans don't start getting their shit together and stop screwing the planet it may die sooner than it should..((And no I'm no Tree hugger I just see humans as a dire threat to this planets life))

3.As I said in one Man, I'd be happy if nature retaliated and retook some of the planet back but alas she doesn't attack humans T_T unless someone digs up another plague from development >.>;

4.I'm not afraid whatever happens happens, If I can help stop it from happening I'll get up and help but if its something beyond my power as a person I'll accept that and make peace with it.

TBH I just get tired of this stuff, sure the Mayan's calander stops at 2012 but ever think that maybe they just got tired of doing what they were doing or hell maybe they got wiped out by a virus or something.

I only listen to one thing in the bible when it comes to the Worlds End, When it happens no one will know and no one will EVER no.

that means no Mayans, no Nostradomis, no crazy prediction will be able to pinpoint when the planets life ends.

So for now Live in the moment and make each day count.

Possibly, though I don't know how far around the corner - I am hoping it won't be in our lifetime. Things could easily collapse within the next few decades though, which is one reason I don't want children - I couldn't bring a precious soul into a world with that sort of future! :(

Despite the promises of governments to become greener, we are not a green society. We use electricity and fuel excessively, pumping greenhouse gases into the environment. We cut down rainforests, destroy habitats, and use a lot of land to nake food for ourselves and lifestock, and further land on which to keep lifestock, which themselves create a lot of methane which adds to the number of greenhouse gases. This isn't helped by the fact we are having to many children who need to be fed... The planet can't really look after our species because of the sheer number of us. Not only are there so many mouths to feed, but so much clean water required, and even that is on the decline...

We are so wasteful too. We don't recycle enough, we waste all sorts of materials and transform raw materials into things that can only be used once before they must be returned to the ground in a state that can't be broken down... We don't build things to last anymore, and even then many people will update what they have within a year or two - I've known people update phones and laptops within a matter of months! - because they want to keep up. It really is sad. :( As a society, we've become so materialistic, so wasteful - we've lost sight of the bigger picture. We've lost sight of how important nature is to our survival. We base our lives on wealth and man-made goods. Consequently, we pollute and contaminate the land we depend on for survival. What's worse, we get rid of it and build industrial estates, houses and roads, all of which add to pollution and make the air unclean. Human beings kinda need clean air... :hmmm:

This can't go on forever. One day, there will be a crises. I'm not necessarily pessimistic; I don't think we'll be totally eradicated as a species, but we may have to live in a way that's not entirely dissimilar to how our ancestors lived. We will have to live more naturally. We will have to eat less, we will have to eat sparingly, as there will be less land on which to grow crops. For example, it's very likely that the United Kingdom will become a group of islands in time. A proportion of the mainland will be lost underwater.

Man has sort of abused nature in recent years. If we don't make an effort to use fewer greenhouse gases, to cut down fewer trees and rainforests - the habitats of hundreds of animals that are crucial to the ecosystem - then we may find ourselves unable to survive. It'll have been our fault. :ness:

I'm not willing an end. I'm willing a more basic way of life NOW so that we can avoid disaster, but one chosen and guided by us! We need to make the steps to avoid the disaster, really. :hmmm: I'm a little afraid, but not for my own safety... I'm afraid for the next generation and/or the generation after that.
 
On some level, people recognize the damage they're inflicting on the environment and the negative toll pollution, climate change and other phenomena exact on the planet.

We have guilty consciences and expect some type of payback for being irresponsible, wasteful and foolish.

But, that doesn't quite answer your question. :grin: I'll say...

The end of the world is always a nuclear missile, button push, away. :elmo:

Say what you want of cessation of nuclear proliferation, that fact certainly hasn't changed.

It all depends. Most of the population is easily swayed, just take a gander at our politics and religions. Everyone's ready to argue, name call, and kill for the sake of the home team. It's kind of sad we haven't progressed our logic, or at least the masses logic, to look beyond and think logically. This is one of the factors attributing to my answer in #3.

With my #1 response sounding man made, our end could be. It only takes a few bombs to end up like the people in The Book Of Eli.:neomon: Or we end up using all the readily available resources and people die due to not having clean water and not enough food. But IT can also be natural, I find the Earth very much alive and don't find any weather disasters to be freak accidents. If something ends up colliding like a meteor or sumwat, our planet isn't any different from the others that are pelted, and natural disasters affect more people due to our ever expanding growth and settlements everywhere.

4) Are you afraid? Or willing it?

I used to be afraid as a child, but you know even if none of this happens we are all going to die at some point. No point mulling over. If I can help in some way to stop a human war and take a stand then that's a different story. If I can't interfere, then kiss rocks. :P

Answer: Who knows? I don't believe in this 2012 predicted crap, but I can't say what the future holds. All I know is that I believe in God and believe that He is the only one who knows, so I'm just going to wait until Gabriel blows the horn.

Answer: In a way I am, but I know that it's inevitable, and that I believe many people will become saved during that time, which is all right with me. Plus, I get to go to Heaven and be with all of my loved ones!
 
I don't think the world will end anytime soon, especially in 2012. I think it's silly that people believe it will end in December of this year and i haven't really seen any evidence supporting it. Also, why did they make that 2012 movie? Scare tactics maybe? I don't know, maybe that is just the conspiracy theorist in me ;)

It probably isn't too far away, perhaps as far away as some think.. but probably not in our lifetime IMO, and probably not the one after that either. I don't know.

Obviously, if it happened real soon, I'd be really afraid. If it happens within the next few lifetimes, I'd be scared for those alive too (I probably wouldn't even know unless it was predicted really soon haha). Hmm. But yeah, seriously don't believe it'll happen soon.
 
The world isnt going to end anytime soon... its just the end of the Mayan Cycle... the last end of cycle had the ice age and humans lived during that so why cant we live through the end of this cycle
 
As a girl who fervently follows the Assassins Creed series -- I don't really believe that 2012 will be the end of the world but I have to say it does creep into the back of my mind from time to time; I guess playing AC will do that to ya :(

It IS a scary thought and as a curious Human I have to wonder about the 1% chance that it does happen. Its definitely a scary concept in my mind but I normally don't think about it or believe it.

2) What gives you the notion, if you said Yes. With more people inhabiting this planet, this demands for more resources to be used, more space to be taken up, and ultimately will drain this planet.
3) Man or nature caused? I'd say humanity caused it. Plus, being in wars and always fighting, causing violence, and technology increasing like it is, we will be our downfall, and the planets downfall.
4) Are you afraid? Or willing it? I'm not afraid. It's the circle of life and its bound to happen. It's the vicious reality that we aren't here forever and that our time is limited, and I accept that.
