I'm not 100% sure whether this is old news, but I only stumbled across it today and the majority of sources were created in the past 20 hours.

This is translated from French....

The DLC will be important for fans of Final Fantasy XIII-2: Square Enix has recently declared that it will not only offer to players extras , accessories and powerful weapons; unfortunately, especially for those of us who absolutely do not want to pay more, certain extras will be needed to fully understand the main plot of the sequel to the first Fabula Nova Crystallis . The software company , in fact, pointed out that, while not influencing the course of events, downloadable content will give more information about what will happen to Serah and Noel , not forgetting Lightning or Hope , who, as you know, will do anything to save Vanille and Fang , nor the rest of the old l'Cie . We don't like mom RPG's idea at all, but you already know this since we've been saying this since forever.

The idea of having to buy multiple DLC every month is already annoying - we do not understand why, instead of offering ready-to-play game, they would hand out a kind of puzzle with missing pieces - and if you add all the above, namely that the extra content will be essential to understanding the plot all the way, your conclusion can only be similar to ours: to tap money, our dear Square is doing just about everything.
We only hope that the prices are not high and that the contents do not leave much to be desired ....
What do you guys think about this?

really we gonna be 'forced' to buy dlc, that just not cool :( like does this mean were going to have to buy the costumes to understand the storyline, if soo that sucks :/ i was only thinking of getting the weapons and fight dlc for the game :/ i'm not to happy with this :(

If this is as they put it here, my hype for XIII-2 (the minimum I had) is now gone. If I seriously miss 5-25% of the game's plot because I don't want to spend an extra $15.99 worth of DLC on top of the $67 I paid for the actual game itself, no. Absolutely not happening. I was going to give Square Enix a chance with XIII-2, and hopefully enjoy it. But if things turn out this way, respect is gone. Square Enix f*cked up.

Wahaa this makes me laugh. The whole reason for this sequal was to clarify the first game or am I mistaken? Now this sequal is incomplete as well?

I and my fellow pessimists already predicted most of FFXIII-2 is rehashed and used parts from FFXIII.

Well I havent heard official statements about this issue yet. I'll take this with a pinch of salt. I have to check this out, cause if its true its pretty dubious.

Transition from FFXIII to FFXIII-2 you had to read those novel thingies and now this.
Also one of the endings is way too open apparantly.

Im so curious about SE's plans :hmmm:

I'm personally quite excited about them expanding the world of XIII. :ness: DLC gives the developers and the gamers an opportunity - to add layer upon layer of (hopefullg meaningful) depth. DLC also adds to the longevity of a game. If they release a few more cutscenes or sections which delve further into the mythology of XIII/XIII-2, I'm all for it! :)

Numerous games have DLC and numerous companies have used it. I don't really feel hard done by because Square has followed suit. I may change my mind if the price of DLC is above a certain amount - in which case, I won't buy it and will feel I've missed out. All I ask is that each downloadable package is worth the money. ;)

@Lirael; just a quick reminder: when posting news threads in this section, make sure you have the source of the article clearly indicated and linked.

------------------

I don't think players will need to purchase costumes to understand more of the storyline - at least that's not what I read (because that would be totally stupid, and I can't think of how that would work unless it comes with a new set of datalog notes as well). Instead, I may have to refer to spoilers:

FFXIII-2 ends on a sombre note, with the world a lot more screwed than it is saved and far from a happy ending while the game crawls miserably to a cliffhanger. As FFXIII-2 hasn't exactly set Japan's sales records on fire, the chances of a third game in the series seems a bit less likely compared to the possibility of storyline DLC.

Yes, storyline content - as in, pay more money just to see how this mess of a story possibly ends, maybe with a couple more chapters or so. So who else fancies shelling out more cash just to complete a game? You may have essentially already bought an INCOMPLETE game! Amazing, huh?

...which is just ridiculous. You can make as many silly new costumes and miscellaneous content as you want for DLC, because ultimately they don't matter, but if they are referring to storyline content DLC, then I implore people to not bother. DLC is ultimately more of a giant nuisance than what it was set out to be, and it begins to promote the idea that developers can get away with charging you extra for content that ought to have been there on the disc.

Dlc is supposed to enrich and add on additional quests etc. but if its made to fill in certain gaps then its a huge fail period. We can sugarcoat it all we want. For now this a rumour imo.

Wow 0__0 I honestly never thought SE would sink this low to get money. If they want to expand the games plot they could add it to the main game, not DLC! This better be a rumor. And I thought the Ezio costume and dlc weapons were too much. -__- If it were all included in the game my views would change dramatically. I'm not buying it anyways :hmmm:

I cant help but call BS on people. Alot of people cry about how much greater western rpgs are, which have TONS of downloadable content that add to the story, yet now that SE does it, its suddenly evil.

Im not a huge fan of DLC in general but it can be done right. If it is, then Im all for it.

I was on the fence to begin with about buying 13-2 but buying an 'incomplete' game is just ridiculous. Especially if it'll carry a 60$ release price. DLC usually costs wha.. 10 bucks a pop per whatever you're buying? If they want to throw around so many costumes and hidden areas, then more power to them.. but don't give us an incomplete game and expect us to be happy with it unless we shell out extra to finish it.

if the story related DLC is free- then I don't think it matters. If it is not free- than the game should be cheaper.

The only way I don't mind paying for storyline DLC- is if it comes out way after the game and adds a lot.

God, what a misleading news post.

The story is not incomplete without the DLC. Square Enix makes some dumb decisions, yes, but they aren't stupid.

Do you people really believe that? Are you that naive? Trust me, the story will be complete. It may suck ass, but it will be complete.

I have played the Japanese version of the game. The ending is :

(no real spoilers. Just describing the nature of the ending)
the story is really not complete. And I'm talking about ALL the endings. The true ending is the most inconclusive of all, with a 'to be continued' at the end. The secret ending only makes things even more inconclusive.

So yeah. Majority of people won't be happy with the DLC thing obviously. I really don't know what SE is thinking...

As for me, as much as I disagree of a game that feels incomplete, I don't mind buying the DLC as long as it completes the story. No matter the price, I really want to see what will happen next in the XIII series.

So the fact that there are rumors of story DLC actually makes me happy. I just hope this won't be a continuous pattern of incompleteness in SE games in the future.

You shouldn't have to buy DLC to actually complete the whole game, it's a sad money grabbing business especially when Square-Enix is involved. That said, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest... Assassin's Creed 2 cut out two whole chapters to put up later as DLC. :dave:

Do the DLC help to complete the game ?

or just pave the way for FFXIII-3.I predict the latter.

I think there will be a FFXIII-3.:humph:

I will probably won't be buying the game right out the gate but wait and see if they'll release another version with the DLC included a few months down the road.:busta:

Enough, we get it, SE is releasing an unfinished game. I don't think bitching about it will make things any better at this point :hmmm:

That's what I keep remembering every time I see these DLC threads :hmmm: Though I didn't have to buy them :hmm:

As much as I enjoyed Assassin's Creed 2, cutting 2 whole chapters from the game (and they are quite decent chapters too!) and repackaging them as DLC would make me want to bitch about Ubisoft as well. However, good thing I bought the GOTY edition for cheap that came with Chapters 12 and 13. And with the sky-high prices for new PS3 games nowadays, just as well! :monocle:

So in that case, let us wait for a possible re-release of FFXIII-2 in the future! Maybe even a GOTY edition (as much as I won't be able to take that seriously ;D) with some DLC stuff packed in there too? Maybe it will even be cheap then! Maybe it will have a Hard Difficulty as well! Just so long as they don't decide to do this for Versus, and seeing as Nomura at least has some more brain cells than Toriyama and Kitase, I can only hope so.

Now I understand where all this hatred of DLC comes from, I really do... However, for a moment, accept the fact the process of of DLC has become industry standard. A person just coming into the gaming industry probably sees this entire thing in a different light. Consider my next statement with an open mind.

Any game released without DLC is incomplete.

Now, gamers expect games to come with DLC content in order to have a complete game. They have slowly been adjusted by corporate greed to want DLC. It is really a rather genius move by the business giants of the gaming industry. Similar to the way you are slowly forced to adapt to smaller boxes of cereal, and are willing to pay for "cheaper" big boxes because you save money.

Square Enix, using that mentality, is actually about 4 years behind. I grew up with gaming circa 1980s++, think DLC is content ripped out of a game... yet I've got a pre-order on the collector's edition of XIII-2 myself. I've come to realize my viewpoint is outdated on the matter of DLC in the gaming industry. Choosing not to accept what is now common practice will only end up with me not playing games from the series I continue to enjoy.
