Lightning Is Playable In Final Fantasy XIII-2 And She’s Super Powerful

Even though everyone thinks Lightning is dead, she is a playable character in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Attendees didn’t see her on the show floor, but in a behind closed doors meeting Square Enix showed a fight between Lightning and Chaos Bahamut.

Before the battle, Lightning jumped on Odin. The camera panned to city ruins and Chaos Bahamut flew from the sky and into Lightning’s path. The camera continued to move during the battle where Lighting rode Odin while Chaos Bahamut lunged at her.

Lightning saved the world in Final Fantasy XIII, so she is not a level 1 character in Final Fantasy XIII-2. She retains powerful attacks, five selectable commands, and pelted Chaos Bahamut with thousands of points of damage. Compare that to Serah and newcomer Noel who scratch out a couple hundred HP per strike on weak enemies.

The battle galloped on until a cinematic action where Lightning jumped on a falling building and cut into Chaos Bahamut. Like other cinematic actions, players had to trigger quick time events.

Square Enix wouldn’t say anything else about where Lightning is other than promising a reveal at Tokyo Game Show. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is slated for a winter release in North America and Europe. Japan gets the game in December.

Now those who think that Lightning is not playable, fear not. And she's way stronger than the new characters for obvious reasons. Summon battles return too!

God of Fantasy: Chains of Cocoon.

That was my immediate thought when it mention the quicktime event.

While the game certainly sounds much more interesting than the first, I still won't be picking it up. I hated the first one, and even with the changes, I'm sure I won't be too fond of it's sequel.

I may pirate it and try it out first. But I'll be damned if I waste my bandwidth on it. :mokken:

People thought she was dead????
The first teaser trailer had her in it... Course she's playable.. I didn't think this was news.
in the E3 trailer shes in the church... heck even Square said "lightning returns" when they first announced the game...

people keep complaining why we only see Serah and Noel playable. Some fear that Lightning has much smaller role. So yeah...
But the main point in the article is the gameplay with Lightning and Odin.

I think they are talking about characters in the game. Serah doesn't believe she is, at least that's what I've gathered from the trailers.

I'm not quite sure why people were thinking Lightning WASN'T playable. I mean, when the game was initially announced, we only saw what, two characters? Lightning and that other dude.

I didn't think Lightning was dead...I hoped Lightning was dead.

I love how RPG characters just assume that people are dead if they can't find them. If I were Lightning, I'd want to hide myself from humanity and get away from the likes of Serah and Team Rocket--I mean, Team Nora, as well. Oh yes, I'm sure they'll have an explanation for why Lightning was presumed dead but, like the rest of the "story" I doubt it'll make any sense whatsoever.

About the only positive thing I can say of these quicktime events is that at least you don't have to just hammer the same button anymore to win, meaning I probably couldn't play my DS with one hand whilst simultaneously playing this. But they've quite clearly been lifted straight from God of War, because FFXIII-2 is, like its horrendous first part, is trying to be as Western as possible. I am aware that plenty of other video games utilise quick time events like this, but its supposed to be a bloody RPG! You don't have quicktime events in RPGs! That'd be like having power-ups in a Fifa game. Or a remake of Zelda II.

As for summon battles, I hope to god they don't have Doom counts again, that was a bloody nuisance.

Me too :(

...and Fix'd :ryan:

Really you know it'd be silly for them to make a sequel revolving around Lightning...and not make her playable. I know everyone is waiting to see her fighting style now since she's been given that armor to wear during battle. No more back flips and sommersaults for you in that outfit girl :britt:

Meh, Lightning is going to have a big role here as well. The world she is currently trapped in might be vast etc. It will switch over to Gran Pulse and that unknown world for sure. Lightning being more powerful than the rest however is a nice addition. At the same time though, it could also mean that you only play as her later in the game. I know there will be more party members with Noel and Serah. They will eventually find Lightning as well. Serah does not believe she is dead.. like a good sister.

this battle was in the E3 trailer that was shown on gamespot on monday so this is old news.... but i'm really liking the quicktime events... look like i'm gonna have to focus on battles with this one :)

They already showed her fighting style in the trailer actually. If you watch the trailer closely, she did a couple of backflips when fighting the bahamut :awesome:

8(

Once again SE defies the laws of physics by making someone in a metal outfit super pliable and light on their feet :awesome:

Ah well. If they are looking for her in this game that might make some of the Lightning fans a bit irritated if they can't play as her for a portion of the game.

uhm, I'm still confused why Lightning said "In a world where I no longer exist". If you take on boards what SE said this story was meant to be more mythological according to the Fabula Nova Crystallis Mythology. If she actually did mean what she said that does mean she is in the "invisible world" (I think thats where dead people are,and the visible world I'm sure is Pulse). And it is likely what she said is true as she was at the Goddess Etro's throne who is in this world. But I'm hoping that there is maybe a twist in this maybe she actually did die and is bought back to life somehow for FFXIII-2. If she was actually dead SE would NEVER obviously reveal say that as its a spoiler, but killing her off and bringing her back to life (somehow) in a new form does make sense.

I don't think any of us were doubting whether or not Lightning was playable. If her role were to diminish a little in the sequel, I wouldn't be complaining. As much as I actually grew to like her even in FFXIII, it is about time that we're given a semi-fresh kind of protagonist(s) to focus on as our main central leads so we're not bored. Unfortunately, I'm just not blown back at all by the less-than stellar ticket of Noel and Serah, the latter in particular as it looks like she can't fight that well at all (unsurprisingly), so I'll have to fiddle around with her Crystarium while Lightning actually looks badass in comparison.

The fight against Chaos Bahamut looks alright, though whether using a repaint of Bahamut is blatant corner-cutting or extremely relevant to the story is unclear to me. Still, the fact that old Cocoon enemies are randomly seen again suggests to me that a lot of shortcuts may have been made by SE in terms of the enemies department. The fact that the camera follows Odin galloping along is certainly different, and we can have our Eidolon versus Eidolon fights. I never liked the Doom counters from the first game, so I swear to God that I may scream if they do reappear at any time.

Well that's sort of granted. They never stop trying to push her an actual main character. Even stuff her into Dissidia.

I guess Lightnings unsent now. LOL.

But Squee-nix isn't going to get rid of Lightning, no way. They are trying desperately to make her the new face of square enix for some reason.
