Words that amuse you

I like reading the dictionary. There. I said it. Anyway, I sometimes come across words that just flat out amuse me. I guess it's mostly the way they sound when I say them. There are also some common everyday words that amuse me as well. So I decided to make a thread about it.

-Pontificate: to speak or express opinions in a pompous or dogmatic way.

I love using this word. I love the way it sounds and I find that it confuses people often as well.


-Finagle: 1 : to obtain by indirect or involved means <finagle a ride home>
2 : to obtain by trickery <finagled his way into the concert>

Another word that's amusing to say. I rarely use this one in a sentence but still love the way it sounds.


-Newfangled: 1 : attracted to novelty
2 : of the newest style or kind <had many newfangled gadgets in the kitchen

This is one of my favorite words. My dad liked to use this word a lot. He liked to refer to modern technology as "newfangled contraptions."


So, what words do you guys find amusing to say? XD

 

[Talbain]

1. Pontificate.

You want to end any argument, no matter how clearly you are at fault, simply accuse your opponent of pontification. Nobody will have any idea what you are talking about but it will make you sound smart regardless.

2. Wumbo.

I wumbo, you wumbo. He, she wumbos? The study of wumbo, wumbology? It's elementary, dear poster!

3. Fap.

I get wrong ideas, okay? Wronger than you're thinking when you say the word. Don't start going into it unless you're trying to make me crack up.

4. Disgruntled.

A great word for describing unhappy people when you want to laugh at their misfortunes.

5. Lindsey Buckingham.

Who does not find this infinitely arrangeable series of hard and soft syllables complimented by a versatile array of vowel sounds to be funny as heck when presented in an artistic manner?

 

[Warbsywoo]

Toxophily - love of archery.

I have never found the opportunity to use toxophily in a legitimate sentence yet, but I'm trying.

[Saga]

Thimble. - that thing you use in sewing or somethng


I'm not sure what it is about the word. But whenever I hear it, I giggle. When I try saying it, I crack up. XDDD


Squirrel - bushy tailed rodent thing

I cannot for the life of me say this word half the time. And I don't think Kelly can either. Which makes it funnier. It's retarded but fraking hilarious.

Ladle - It's just a ridiculous word.

Boobs - Genuinely fun to say. No man (nor some women) is able to say this word with a negative tone. Go on, try.

Sussed - Been using it a lot in my mind while playing IX for some reason. As in, "I would equip Garnet with the Feather Boots, but I'm not overly sussed about her not having Auto-Float."

 

[Kandy-Sugar]

Fathom - To understand.

It just sounds funny when someone uses this word. >.< I had a co-worker last year who used it all the time but in the funniest ways. XD Sometimes it didn't even make sense when he said it. >.< He would just say it for the sake of saying it.

Crouton - A small piece of sautéed or rebaked bread, often cubed and seasoned.

Just another word that sounds funny. Sometimes my friends call each other croutons when we're mucking around and such just because it sounds funny. >.<

 

[Meds]

Angina- any attack of painful spasms characterized by sensations of choking or suffocating.

I had an uptight, slighty snobby biology teacher in grade 11. This lady never laughed, never smiled, and scowled at you any time you asked her a question.
She taught me this word in class (from an educational standpoint, of course) and her seeming lack of a sense of humour was probably the only reason I actually found it as funny as I did, because the fact that I knew she was thinking the same thing as everyone else in the room whilst making a mighty effort in pretending not to was too precious.

Any time from this point on she was forced to utter that word, or better yet, write in on the board, I'd be sure to laugh so she could hear me.

Buttsex - Doing someone up teh butt.

This word. It's just, so awesome.

That word always amuses me. It's just the capital of Thailand. It's weird, though. "Bang." And-

I'm quite fond of (old fashioned) words that descibe misschievous or stupid persons. Preferably in in old fashioned Dutch, but there are some quite great English variants too. My English vocabulary in this compartment is (regretfully) not very big, but some good ones that pop up are

- Pip-squeak
- Numbskull/numskull
- Rascal
- Good-for-nothin'
- Scoundrel
- Daft

[The Illusive Man]

Spiffing: this word always make me chuckle, and its dead wierd if anyone says it to you

Sodden: Very wet, its a bloody great word xD

Moist: always sounds slightly perverse, even when said in non-perverse sentances.

Masticate: to chew, can often be mis-interprited xD

There are many more but these have to be top of the list

+Kerfuffle- vb (tr) Scot to put into disorder or disarray; ruffle or disarrange

(famously used in Little Britain even though I do hate that show sometimes)

+Phlegm- n. 1. Thick, sticky, stringy mucus secreted by the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract, as during a cold or other respiratory infection. 2. Sluggishness of temperament.

(I first came across this word in Harry Potter where it's used to describe Fleur Delacour. The spelling itself amuses me, and the fact that poor Fleur is called Phlegm at times)

+Inebriated- adj. Exhilarated or stupefied by or as if by alcohol; intoxicated.

(It's just amusing for people to work out what I'm on about when I playfully use this word when they're drunk. I love how you can never guess what the word actually means)

+Shenanigan- n. 1. A deceitful trick; an underhanded act.

(It's one of these words that linguistically sounds odd and can leave you in a tongue-twister if you pronounce it fast and frequently enough)

Funky: type of disco-like music, or an odd smell. xD

Spoodle: the thingy I use at work to scoop out pizza sauce. Seriously, it says "spoodle" on it.

meander: to wander aimlessly. It just sounds funny.

discombobulated: all screwed up. Not sure if it's a word, but I use it a lot. xD

 

[Joyful Blue]

Moist - Sounds horrible whatever the context, yet at the same time it's oddly satisfying in a strange sort of way.

Riboflavin - An orange-yellow crystalline compound, C17H20N4O6, the principal growth-promoting factor in the vitamin B complex, naturally occurring in milk, leafy vegetables, fresh meat, and egg yolks.

An interesting word that you hardly ever get to use, ever.

Dysentry - an infection of the digestive system that results in sever diarrhea....

I won't go into full detail, but another interesting word. Would be a bad way to go...

karaoke - n.

1. A music entertainment system providing prerecorded accompaniment to popular songs that a performer sings live, usually by following the words on a video screen.
2. The performance of such music.

Let's face it, we've all probably wanted to try it once, or have.. although how much liquor did it take to get us that way? The word itself is fun to say..

McDonalds - Sometimes pronounced here in the south Redneck places as MACdonalds.. most people have no complaints about the place.. but let's face it how many times have you said this word in your life?

Lake Titicaca - a lake located on the border of Peru and Bolivia.
I know it's really kiddish to laugh--but dang, it's too funny to say. It's pretty funny to say around people too.

Abasement (Noun)

1. A low or downcast state.
2. Depriving one of self-esteem

This word was introduced to me by my English teacher some time back. When I first heard it, I thought she was referring to some kind of basement. It was only when she explained the meaning that I realized it was a word. Thereafter, being so amused by this, I spent the whole week spamming that word as and when I get the opportunity to.

"Hey, do you live in abasement?"

... Is just one of the many ways I used this word...

Doodle - intransitive verb 1 : to make a doodle; 2 : dawdle, trifle

I wasn't aware that it could also mean to dawdle. XD It's an amusing word nonetheless.

Antidisestablishmentarianism: n.1.the doctrine or political position that opposes the withdrawal of state recognition of an established church; - used especially concerning the Anglican Church in England. Opposed to disestablishmentarianism.

Perhaps one of my favorite words of all time. Although I've never once used it in a sentence.
