I was just wondering what people thought when comparing the grid system between FFX and FFXII. They both follow the same idea where you cant use something until you get it on the grid, the difference being with FFX you can use weapon classes without unlocking. I am having trouble deciding which i like better so I'm looking for some input. Thanks

10s was better cause when you learn the spell you can actually use it. As for 12 you had to do devious and boring chains to bring Lp up. And then after that you had to buy the spell and if they weren't selling the spell you just wasted your Lp. To me 12 made things harder and more annoying i hope they never do that again.

I hated that you needed a license to wear a frigging hat in XII, I was fine when it came to skills etc to an extent but restricting the weapons/armour I can use? Not so much.

X was fine although it might have been better if like XII each character had their own grid so the characters would have had more individuality.

Edit: Thanks to above poster for reminding me, having to buy spells was annoying as Hell.

I like X's sphere grid better than XII's license system, because throughout the majority of the game, the sphere grid lets each character have their own special abilities making then unique. At least that's how it is to me.

On the other hand, the license system's strength is also it's weakness. With the license system, the player can tweak each character's abilities and skills the exact way they want them. No character HAS to be a mage or a fighter or an archer, but can be what ever the player wants. Depending on how you us it, though, it can away the uniqueness of each character.

EDIT: Needing to a License to use specific gear and having to buy magic and skills before you could use them was also a pain.

x's was far better, having to have the licence to use a certain weapon stunk, I loved the sphere grid, it was such a good way of levelling your characters up, the licence grid was just naff....

the sphere grid had so much more to it it it made the licence grid just look piddly and annoying -__-

I like FFX's system better. FFXII's faults have all been mentioned, but the only thing that sucked a little about FFX was when I leveled up TOO much and sometimes I didn't have the spheres to use in the node. Ability spheres were hard to come by in the beginning of the game >.>

EDIT: I appreciate the effort that Square put into the FFXII grid system, but it was more annoying and tedious than anything

I'm saying FFX too!
I thought that the story of FFXII had the potential to be better than FFX but the lack of character depth and personality sort of ruined the storyline...and the same goes for the sphere/license grid, X's was great and funner whilst XII's you were just getting the same license's for all the characters.

You did read the OP didn't you? This was just about the Sphere/License grid.

JR is so gonna love this thread when she comes across it.

Although their powering up systems are similar (license grid and Sphere grid) i preferred X to XII as i found the story line better, i prefer the fighting style and i also preferred the ones specific type of weapon for one person system

The game just made me more curious though. I would like to know what would happen if you equip Weapon,Armor, and Acc without getting licensed. Thats like telling people what to wear and not to wear.

Oh boy.

Yeah, you know what I'm going for. not because it is JUST FFXII, but because there were things in FFX I found simply annoying.

The sphere grid system. I found it incredibly tedious, long winded.

Customization lacked direction too - customizing summons was just stupid, the amount of spheres needed to make one tiny upgrade was silly. Weaponswise, I could have done with a guide!

Though a good story, it dragged at some points, and I thought it would never end. There was also too much in the terms of FMV's.

Getting some of your top celestial weapon boosts just required some ridiculous tasks.

Overdrives were nifty though, as were boss battles. Music, almost perfect. Blitzball = legendary. So, it most certainly isn't a bad game, I just find a fair few imperfections IMO with it.

I'm a big fan of 12 but hey 10 is a heck of alot better.

The license board was anoying and I hated that I couldn't learn the good spells earlly in the game were as in 10 you can massivelly over train thanks to overkills giving double exp, gil and items.

Over all since I'm a overtrainer in games like that I think 10 in alot better than 12.

I prefer the Sphere Grid, personally. I loved having so much control over my characters' abilities. The License System isn't bad, though. One of the high points with FFXII. It just isn't as good as the Sphere Grid.

I don't have a problem with the licence board in XII, although I do think it's unnecessary; there's no reason for the licence board to exist IMO, but it does. :/

I don't think the licence board causes XII to be worse than it could've been though, like I said, I have no problem with it.

I didn't really like FFXII. It's battle system really put me off. Though I didn't exactly love Final Fantasy X, either... I found Blitzball, customization, and it's battle system a lot more appealing. But for me, FFX was really lacking in character design.

That, and I really don't think that there was a lot of humour or minigames in FFXII. )=

For me, appeal to a game is mostly about the smaller things rather than the large things.

I congratulate you for spelling humour with a 'u':neomon:

I find the story and the characters to be more important than the little things, but it's just my opinion.

I found XII's story to be boring, along with it's characters.
X had a story that I liked a lot, the characters were goodish, they weren't great. Yet they were better than those in XII.

The sphere grid, is my favourite system, and the License board, was at times tedious.

Although I think that FFX is FAR superior to 12 :-)P at Rulia), I actually like their grid/leveling systems equally. FFX was fun in letting you follow the sphere grid and customize weapons and do other things with equipment/special spheres, while a similar system was followed in 12. As far as the weapon restrictions go in 12, I kind of liked having to spend LP on unlocking weapons/armor/accessories because it made it feel like your characters had job classes. It was neat. :P

I prefered X's to XII's. The license board was complete by the time I was half way through the game, but only one or two of the characters would complete their section of the sphere grid at the end of the story.

Buying licenses was a pain. It meant whenever I came to a town, I HAD to enter the shopping area to buy them. And it wasn't just one shop, there were six types! One for Magicks, one for Technicks, one for armour, one for weapons, one for items and one for gambits! Sometimes you might find a shop that sold a mix, but wouldn't have a large selection

Am I alone in thinking that XII is superior to X?

Characters:
Most notable characters of each game:

X - Yuna and Tidus. To me, they were the only characters that actually pushed this story forward, and not because of the romance. I don't feel that the other protagonists had any personality beyond being brooding or annoying.

XII - This game made me appreciate villainy a whole lot more. I loved Cid, Gabranth, and even Vayne. I feel that they had so much more personality than past FF villains. Also, I thought Balthier had the most personality of the XII protagonists. Even though Ashe was a bitch, I felt that was a good thing. There's not bean many bitches in FF.

Voice Acting:
XII > (infinity) > X

Story:
I actually prefer XII's story + setting. I found the world + plot so much more expansive. Spira was just too linear for my tastes. Even the 'plot twists' along the way were a bit predictable. I knew Seymour would end up evil ¬_¬

Soundtrack:
I'll have to give it to X on this one. It had such memorable tracks like The Sending and Otherworld. The music in XII was mostly ambiance ... Suteki Da Ne > Kiss Me Goodbye.

Gameplay:

I preferred XII's battle system and system mechanics. As much as I enjoyed having classes in X, the Sphere Grid was tedious to level. I thought the License Board was so much easier. I could just raep low-level monsters for LP. Admittedly buying Spells and technicks was annoying.

Overall, I feel that XII > X.
