There was a thread about this long ago. I decided to create a new one.

MOST IMPORTANT RULE:
-Please do not post:
"I name him Tidus."
"Tidus"
"Chappu"
"(insert name here)"

This is the post count section. Please elaborate your point. You can state your reasons for doing so. You can include your reactions, whether funny or awkward as a result of the name change. Any spam posts will be DELETED without notice, and infraction will be added.

For me, I named him Tidus. Well because I want to seriously enjoy the story and avoid awkward moments. I think that Tidus is one of the more creative names in FF, unlike names such as Snow, Lightning, Hope, etc.

i like i always did in the past, named tidus after me. his name was seddy. when given an option i always..well 90% of the time will make the main character of the game me, then if i can name the support characters after my close friends. in some instances, when i do name a character after myself. they often get caught up in events that i some how can relate to my life. kinda eerie in my opinion.

I named him Tidus first, on my actual serious playthrough. I thought people would say his name out loud, but I was wrong, I never heard his name said out loud, until I played Kingdom Hearts xP.

And then, on my joke playthrough, I named him Henry. Because it was amusing to hear my cousin yell out "HENRY HITS FOR 9999 DAMAGE" every time she watched me play.

After regretting my decision to call Squall 'Saphyn,' I decided to keep Tidus as Tidus. I had wanted to enjoy the story completely and giving Squall a new name had been a little distracting. :lew: It just didn't fit in the same way. -_-

I feel they should have recorded the name Tidus, but could have omitted this from the audio for those who picked a different name. :hmm: It is a little strange to listen to discussions in which characters don't refer to one another. :wacky:

Then again, the dialogue would have sounded strange anyway. Did you know that they sped up and slowed down the lines of the English actors to fit the animation? :wacky:

The first I played FFX I didn't notice that they never spoke his name.

Anyway. I kept his name as Tidus simply because I never rename my characters. I feel that renaming them would kind of detract from the story a bit. The way I see it is that he was meant to be called Tidus so that's what I'm going to name him. Plus I imagine it would be a little confusing if I renamed them on my first play through and then tried discussing the game with someone using the real names.

No no and NO. The chance to rename the MC is something that a japanese RPG would have to do always. Since the game is a RPG then there must be at least a character naming option to compensate the lack of anything that doesnt make a rpg a true "Role" playing Game.

The objective of naming Tidus is because he is the MC, and his porpuse is to be a representation of you the player and by giving him a fully recorded name would distance the character as a extension of the player, for that reason in X-2 he doesnt have a name because he is you all the time and giving him a recorded name would void any player choice you had from the beggining.

I named him Tidus and on the nex playtrhough my name and now that im playing International i named him Player, because that is what he is the digital representation of me the Player. So after X-2 the series became just less FFish and became more of a story of some punks that want to save the world than me and my friends saving the World.

Thats why i love games Like Persona and Growlanser, because those are more RPGs than any FF.

:hmmm: I never change the names of my characters when I play games. I like the default names most of the time. Though I hate Tidus a lot so now i am wishing i called him something funny...something I cannot think off the top of my head, but i assure you it would be hilarious.

I always keep the names the same. When I was younger I would name them different names and then didn't like it so I always stick to what it's intended to be. The first time I played the game I didn't actually notice that they never said his name, it was playing X-2 that it became obvious and silly-sounding when they had no name to refer to him as.

I agree, it would have been good to do that and then if anybody did change his name they'd never know the difference.

Xx..xX

LOL, I actually forgot what his name used to be MOST of the time. I think the last time I named him, his name was Blaze (yeah, I was a stoner back then :P).

But I KNOW most of the time when I could , he'd be Dave and the lead female would be my crush in real life, lmfao. I'd always feel so awkward when my friend would drop by and she read her name on the screen , haha. But yeah, it'd usually be my name and usually my crush :P and the rest would be my friends if I could name all the characters.

I would always rename Squall and Cloud because what kind of names are Squall and Cloud? Well recently I kept Cloud but Squall? I mean really, SQUALL? SQUALL SQUASH SQUEAL SQUAAAAWWWWWL

However, Tidus was a surprisingly decent name for the main character, and so I kept his real name :lew:

On a different note, I agree with Lirael. When Lulu first met Tidus she was like "Who are you?" and well he never told her :hmmm:

My first time playing, I named him after myself (Ryan) because I had the option to do so. I tend to do that with my first playthroughs for some reason. Seeing as they didn't call him by name I didn't really care nor did it matter to me. When I started a second file I named him Tidus as I usually do my second time around.

I named him a couple of names/aliases I go by, like alexxx. and FantasyDragon. I made a game that I'm rushing through so I kept him as Tidus. And one day I was really bored and decided to name him and the aeons silly names, so I named him SugarPie.

I used to name him Akira. I always used to name the main characters Akira. Back then I was a huge fan of the anime Akira hence the naming. I also had tons of cool names on the a piece of paper. Names I encountered in my games, movies etc., but I lost the damn thing :(

i named him derek, because when i first played FFX the game didn't belong to me and i would play it at my friend's house, so it made it easy to tell who's files were what.

but i really don't think it matters what you name him, because despite being one of the best RPGs around, I don't think anyone in the game ever even says the character's name in voice or text.

The problem with games that ask for your name is that you never hear your own chosen name from the voice actors. Perhaps this will change with futuristic voice technology. I doubt it.

Regardless, I named Tidus after my own online persona, Dred. I knew that nobody would say Dred (or Tidus for that matter). Whenever I name a video game character after myself, it lets me personalize what's going on to that character.

I did not name each of the Aeons, however. I only renamed Tidus. Renaming the Aeons would've gotten very confusing when it was time to summon them.

I did the same thing in games like Legend of Zelda and Pokemon. And in Pokemon, I would always give Gary and the other rivals a vulgar name. XD

The first time I played I thought it would be funny to name him "Lardass" because I was 12 or something. Sue me.

Then the second time I think I kept the name Tidus. The third time I named him Shuyin because I thought I was clever and original. Then I found out online that pretty much everyone and their brother named him that after they played X-2 and wanted to replay X. So much for being original. And then I think I named him Tightass after that one parody.....I don't remember who she was, but she did a review of FFX and dubbed him Tightass. Then I decided to be original (again) and named him Meg Ryan. Then I found out everyone and their brother did that too. Other than those I can't think of any other names I gave him. In case anyone is wondering, yes....I've played this game many MANY times. lol.

I restarted the game a load of times when first playing through for a few reasons, once for example when I learned you could actually beat the chocobo eater. Anyways I named him jeched on most of these, because I wanted him to be match Jecht as a whole father/son thing. It was pretty lame but I was 12

I named him Reef as in coral.

I had 5-10 different names I would set as main character. :ohshit:

Something like... Reef, XxX, Shaolin, Ace, etc.
