While I don't think anyone is necessarily saying by omission that they don't care about those things also, I do have to agree here: while it is really sad and fucked up when people abuse pets, it's no worse than what happens to livestock, the rainforest, and people in struggling countries every day, to name a few. And I really wish the media would pay an equal amount of attention to those things, because then maybe an equal amount of outrage could be elicited by society and those with the power to do so would actually address those problems as well. It is kind of fucked up, for example--well actually, really fucked up--that it's legal to gun down wolves in the western U.S. for doing natural wolf things, and yet if someone harms a pet puppy, their name gets dragged through dirt and they go to jail and/or get slapped with a hefty fine. What animals were domesticated over the course of history was largely up to human whims, and I don't think it's fair that we have the power to decide which ones are worthy of living or not--and especially when it's affected by how aesthetically appealing they are >_>

Just another thought also (vegetarian rant), on the helplessness issue, it is also a bit ridiculous when people who eat meat fawn so much over the helplessness of puppies, kittens, etc. when most livestock are barely able to move around in their cages and have no chance of escaping as they're being slaughtered. I don't think an animal can get much more helpless than that, and if there ever was any glamour in "hunting and killing an animal for food" then there certainly isn't anymore.

I actually created a thread about this a few months ago, it's sometimes called "animal crush porn" and it's equally revolting :sad3: I believe last I heard they passed another law to curb it again recently, since then, in the U.S., but I don't recall all the details :hmmm:
 
I buy organic meat. More expensive, but makes me feel better (selfish)
